Obviously you’re not going to be able to tell me for sure without seeing my portions etc but I’m a bit annoyed.

She’s been wfh this week, normally we don’t really see each other. I’ve just been into the kitchen to get a coffee and opened the cupboard to get a snack to go with it (a dark chocolate rice cake if that’s relevant) and she said “you eat too much. Always eating eating eating. You will get fat when you eating like this all the time”

So Monday I had
2 cups of tea
porridge with mixed seeds
a peanut cereal bar &coffee
cheese and cucumber sandwich (granary bread, butter), cranberry juice, satsuma
2 sausages and veg (carrots, broccoli, leeks, swede, sprouts). cherry yoghurt.
Plus water and herbal tea (3 herbal teas, 2 water)

Tuesday
2 cups of tea
2 weetabix
standard size bag of maltesers and coffee
2 pieces granary toast with half an avocado and sunflower seeds. Greek yoghurt with mixed ground seeds. Bag of salt and vinegar squares. Cranberry juice
shakshuka with extra veg in (courgette, aubergine, kale as well as the peppers, onion and tomatoes), feta and hummus on top, flatbread on the side
water, herbal tea as Monday

Weds and Thurs basically as Tuesday except Wednesday I had toast and marmite with my coffee, no crisps either day. Dinner Wednesday was lentil and fennel stew with rice, had a digestive biscuit afterwards, last night pork casserole with mash, green beans and broccoli.

Putting aside the fact that she was rude, I don’t think I eat that much? Basically 3 meals and one snack. Would you consider this a lot of food?

You don't need to justify yourself to anyone. She's just rude!

SpiralHecate · 25/03/2023 18:39

Your diet sounds fine, and your lodger was being very rude.

Macwomble · 25/03/2023 18:40

Tell us you shop at Waitrose without telling us you shop at Waitrose

I’ve lived in France, Italy and Spain. No-one ever had crisps at home. And I don’t think I ever saw anyone eating them either. People didn’t really eat between meals in the same way.

The French do eat between meals but not as much as we do, it is more frowned upon for adults to do this - at 11am children mostly have “gouter” which is a sweet snack. Sometimes after school I’ve known French friends let their kids have some of a baguette or lick out the Nutella with a spoon. I’ve known a French teenage boy (19) who stayed with my parents as a foreign language student to eat whole tubs of chocolate ice cream to himself and to snack on chocolate bars and crisps, he did say he liked our English snacks!

I’ve also known French friends over here and in France have yogurt, fruit for snacks. But cakes are a mostly a treat, usually bought for a special occasion from the patisserie and there’s less snack type chocolate like Twixes, Kit Kat like we have over here. Their branded chocolate I was never keen on but my French friend gave me those small Kinder chocolate bars (they’re more for kids though).

What an arse!

I think I’d say something like “Yeah, but I think you pay too little rent, so…”

Your diet sounds ideal.

She sounds like she’s from a different culture where commenting on peoples’ weight is normal and socially acceptable. I’m from Cyprus and the first thing people comment on when I go back home is my weight fluctuation. I don’t take offence as I know they don’t mean any harm. I don’t think she meant to be rude if that’s any conciliation but if she lives here she should be mindful of this culture and how such a comment would be perceived so maybe you can say that to her?

Having said that, it’s a fucking annoying comment so I totally get that you’re annoyed.

That’s funny you say that about Cypriots. My ex step mother when married to my dad always stayed a size 8 after having 3 DC and commented on my weight as a size 8-10 teenager/early 20s and if I lost it!

Her own DD (my half sister) was prone to plumpness as a teenager and got to a size 18 when at uni but when she left uni dieted and exercised and got down to a 8-10.

iaapap · 25/03/2023 18:44

How rude she is!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/03/2023 18:49

I'm guessing the lodger wants a larger room and expects you to slim down smartish in order to fit in the box room.

I think in a lot of European countries, certainly in Croatia (where I'm from) adults don't snack really, not regularly anyway. They might eat a piece of fruit in between meals. Crisps is something kids eat at birthday parties etc. People don't usually eat sugary treats with coffee.

How bloody sad is that?!

I’d better tell my ex Romanian colleague then who used to regularly scoff a whole big bag of Haribo sweets at her desk (for a sugar rush and snack) she told me. She was tall but quite curvy too.

I do have a Bosnian friend who liked to take healthier snacks like Go Ahead bars with us (and give them to me too!) when we went out on day trips so maybe you’re right there.

Natalia96 · 25/03/2023 18:49

It's not too much food/calories if you are moderately active, however, your diet isn't healthy. Skip the processed foods and all the added sugar. Add more veggies, berries and protein plus healthy fats.

Midastouch21 · 25/03/2023 18:55
  1. Are you happy with yourself ?
  2. Are you happy with your diet ?

Ask yourself those 2 questions
Remember when Answering those questions, the question isn't "are others happy with" it's "Are you"

If the answer to those is YES , then what the hell does it matter what ANYONE else thinks.

If the answer is no to either then , change that for yourself, and what the hell does it matter what ANYONE else thinks.

I will answer what you asked and personally if that is your diet it looks like a good diet, and it isn't about how much or how often you eat , it's about calories in and calories burnt , if the calories you consume is less than the calories you burn you will lose weight if the calories you consume are the same as you burn you will maintain your weight if you consume more calories than you burn you gain weight , it really is that simple , unless you have a metabolic disorder.
Also you do not need to justify or explain yourself to anyone and certainly Not a lodger .
Be happy .

ensayers · 25/03/2023 18:57

"yeah I can afford to eat loads, thanks to all the tax free money that you pay me"

I have a lodger problem too. One of my lodgers won't share the kitchen. It's a big room, but he wants to treat it like the bathroom, a one in one out situation. Irritates me! Try and make a coffee while he's making his lunch and he gets all ar$ey!

Aly1977 · 25/03/2023 18:58

Tell her to do one cheeky mare!

NannySarey · 25/03/2023 19:03

I can’t possibly comment on how much you eat when I eat 5 weetabix every day for breakfast followed by 2 slices of toast or a cinnamon bagel… 🤷🏻‍♀️

YouSeenMyMarbles · 25/03/2023 19:10

I understand nutrition - YOU DO NOT eat too much!!! You eat PERFECTLY well.

Unless you asked her to judge your eating habits, then she has the manners of a pig.

Good luck living with that housemate - I couldn't xx

cittigirl · 25/03/2023 19:10

Tell her to fuck off. How rude

SirTarquin · 25/03/2023 19:13

@Orcubed

Is your lodger from a European country?

I'm dying to know because like I said up thread I live with this sort of comment via remote relatives. I'm entirely convinced they must come from the same country and this is a cultural thing...

Stuff like 'you are fatter this year than last year' are common place but it's not seen as rude for some inexplicable reason.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/03/2023 19:16

With regards to snacking in France, Italy, Spain etc- less snacking might be due to fact I've seen some pretty large lunches consumed by locals and quite often they take more time at lunch but work a bit later. Our client in Italy has full lunches with pasta , meat, fish, salad and bread and all the staff have it too. Apparently French school kids lunches can be quite a full thing too . Maybe we snack more because a lot of people will just have a small sandwich at lunch or a bowl of soup or just a yoghurt and a banana etc - whereas other places may place less emphasis on snacking bits through the day and evening meal blowouts

Moominmum81 · 25/03/2023 19:20

I eat about triple that 😂 where are your late night bags of mini eggs and family bags of kettle chips?!

rusanaka · 25/03/2023 19:20

The meals and food you list are fine and you and all of us know that a healthy diet (which is what you posted) is no problem.

I don’t think you’re telling the whole story. I can’t believe someone really said the words “you’re always eating, eating, eating” in response to fairly low calorie balanced diet with minimal snacking. You also originally said you were eating rice cakes but then didn’t include that in your list. Me thinks you’re telling a biased version of events here.

Mandyjack · 25/03/2023 19:22

Think you need to get rid of your lodger. You are not eating too much and even if you was wtf has it got to do with her!

maryb0412 · 25/03/2023 19:25

Tell her, that you have started "comfort eating" since she arrived!

Schmutter · 25/03/2023 19:26

Sounds healthy to me.

It’s a lot more than I’d eat in a day, but I don’t eat much 🤷‍♀️Doesn’t mean I comment when I see people eating what I’d consider a lot.

TellySavalashairbrush · 25/03/2023 19:27

I couldnt live with someone who comments on what I eat. Give her her marching orders.

Insertcreativenamehere · 25/03/2023 19:36

Didn’t read it all but it’s no one’s business what you eat - let alone a lodger 🙄
