To not feel able to cook in my kitchen because it’s dirty

WoIsMe · 24/03/2023 08:00

My DH did the kitchen yesterday after dinner and this is what I find when I go to make my own breakfast and my kids’ lunches. I don’t feel that I can prepare food without cleaning up the kitchen first but I have to get my kids to school and get to a meeting at 9 a.m. while my DH has already gone out to work.

So, AIBU for feeling that I can’t cook in this kitchen without having to clean it first?

It would irritate me for just long enough to spray the counter, wipe the crumbs up, run the tap and wipe over the sink with a scrubber sponge and some Fairy liquid.

So about 75 seconds in total.

WoIsMe · 24/03/2023 08:53

I'm asking whether I'm unreasonable to feel that I need to clean up before preparing food. It's all very well to say put down a chopping board but if food falls off on to the dirty worktop then I wouldn't want to eat it. Or if I'm washing grapes for my children's packed lunch and some fall into the dirty sink, that's not very hygienic. I don't have OCD or health anxiety but surely there are basic standards of cleanliness? If you came round to dinner and I'd prepared it in that kitchen without cleaning first, would you be happy?

Surely by the time you wrote this post you could have cleaned it? It doesn't exactly need fumigating...

Honestly, I wouldnt give a shit unless there are photos I cant see.

It’s just some bite, it would take seconds to clean it. You e spent more time on this thread

i think you need to rethink if you’ve mental health issues round this stuff, as this isn’t normal

WoIsMe · 24/03/2023 08:56

To those saying it wouldn't take long to clean up, that's not my question. I'm saying I would have to clean up before preparing food; my DH is saying it's fine and I'm being unimaginably precious. So, AIBU?

No - you should clean up first.
Yes - go ahead and start cooking.

I always like the kitchen to be clean before I start cooking. So yes I would wipe those three crumbs up and crack on.

BadForBusiness · 24/03/2023 08:56

Actually I think that posting on MN may have been useful OP. If you'd gone into your DH with this overdramatic "It was impossible to make breakfast in the kitchen and I had to clean it and I was late for work!!!!" angle then he'd roll his eyes like we are and dismiss your legitimate complaint about him doing a half-arsed job.

Use this thread as a prompt to clarify how you're going to talk to him about it.

Same, I frequently leave crumbs on my own kitchen worktop because I do a big clean once a week and frankly can’t be arsed in between. So no, that wouldn’t stop me preparing food or bother me if someone else’s kitchen looked like that and they cooked for me. I don’t wash grapes either, I’m not dead yet

Blossomtoes · 24/03/2023 08:57

Is that it?

Zebedee55 · 24/03/2023 08:58

It's taken you, longer to post and try and upload a pic than it would have done to have just cleaned it.

Its hardly a tip.🙄

Yes YABU.

that said, he has done a crap job of cleaning himself. But the crumbs wouldn’t stop me preparing food.

MaryHinges · 24/03/2023 08:58

That's just a few crumbs? I was expecting an environmental health inspection??

lalaloopyhead · 24/03/2023 08:59

Its looks a bit grubby, but would only take a minute to give the counter top a squirt and a wipe. I don't think I have ever washed a grape in my life (am i supposed to??) but you could chuck them in a sieve/colander, run under the tap and job done?
Its annoying if you previously left it spotless, but I can't see how it is going to stop you making packed lunch and breakfast.

butterpuffed · 24/03/2023 08:59

Clean it up first, it'd take less than a minute and hardly worth mentioning .

Blossomtoes · 24/03/2023 09:00

Incidentally I love the look of outrage on the red bird’s face.

If food falls in the sink, just was it again. If food touches the counter, brush off any crumbs. It doesn't look like anything such as raw chicken has been on there, just fry crumbs, so what's the problem?
Yes, it's annoying he didn't do it properly, but it's not actually dirty, just messy.
How filthy do you think your own kitchen is?

Azandme · 24/03/2023 09:00

I'd roll my eyes that he'd done a half assed job, and probably have a chunter to myself as I sprayed and wiped.

I may also mention it to him.

But that would be the extent of my botheredness.

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 24/03/2023 09:00

Well yeah spend 20 seconds wiping the crumbs up, it’s hardly an issue is it. If you don’t, then that’s not an issue either.

Imnotachap · 24/03/2023 09:00

Is this an ongoing problem with him not completing jobs properly?

Crumbs are the work of the devil btw and must be eliminated

bigbluebus · 24/03/2023 09:00

I'd be annoyed but it wouldn't stop me prepping food as I don't prep food in the sink, on the floor or directly on the hob surface (I use pans!)
And if I was making sandwiches then I'd do it on a bread/chopping board - of which we have many, which go straight in the dishwasher after use.

I agree with him. You are being incredibly precious. That would take a few seconds to wipe up. Honestly.

Same, I never wash fruit! We're still alive 🤷‍♀️

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 24/03/2023 09:01

There must be a back story here…

EyesOnThePies · 24/03/2023 09:01

Not a great job cleaning up by your DH

Perfectly hygienic looking for making breakfast / packed lunches

No , that wouldn’t worry me in the least if you invited me for dinner.
