To ask how many times you get up in the night (to pee)

I never get a full night's sleep (7-8 hours) without getting up at least once. On a bad night it can be 5-6 times.

GP not interested and I've dealt with this for years. Is this normal for some people?

I've tried cutting out caffeine completely and not drinking liquids for hours before bed. It doesn't help.

It might be to do with blood sugar levels. Someone above already suggested a diabetes test. You could also try a ketogenic diet, or go raw vegan for one week and see if this helps.

whyhere · 24/03/2023 08:13

64 year old female here, one child in her 30s, almost always up once, at any point from 1 to 5 hours after falling asleep.

carriedout · 24/03/2023 08:15

You need to give more info. Do you drink alcohol or caffeine daily? Do you eat a healthy diet (be honest!)? Do you have any stress issues?

I would say it is not normal and requires further investigation. It can be indicative of serious things like diabetes - have you been tested for anything?

I would see a different GP and say you want to be investigated for serious causes.

That sounds exhausting for you and I definitely think you should see another doctor in order to try and get this sorted.

I don't usually wake up in the night for a wee. At the moment I sometimes go once or even twice, but I'm pregnant.

Ohdearnotagain76 · 24/03/2023 08:16

About 3 times, I'm late 40's and on hrt,was only once before started hrt. Doctors have said its the estrogen (I think) and should settle. Also I've had 4 children biggest being nearly 10lb, had several gynaecology operations/issues, slightly over weight and my youngest has never slept through (14now) he's autistic and adhd with severe anxiety. I also don't work so it's not a issue (partner works and luckily I don't need to at the moment). Doctors also said they will prescribe a tablet if I want/need but will give hrt time to settle first

LolaMoon · 24/03/2023 08:17

None- unless I drink a lot of water prior to bed

GoChasingWaterfalls · 24/03/2023 08:18
  1. Once is normal for me, especially as I tend to have a cuppa around 9pm. During my period it can be 3 or 4!
MajesticWhine · 24/03/2023 08:20

I'm early 50s (having had 3 children if it's relevant). I sleep through on the whole. I don't need to get up for a wee.
You could try bladder retraining?

yogaretreat · 24/03/2023 08:22

Never and I have a big glass of water before bed.

I drink loads of water so think I've trained my bladder somehow.

That sounds really annoying for you

dreamingbohemian · 24/03/2023 08:28

See another doctor

My DH has this, the GP first did blood tests to rule out anything serious and then prescribed pills which have helped a lot

Xrays · 24/03/2023 08:31

I admit I haven’t read all the replies. You need a referral to urology. I had this and was diagnosed with an over active bladder. I take amitriptyline 10mg every night and it’s completely solved it for me. I sleep through now, no issues.

catshreddedthesofa · 24/03/2023 08:31

Once a night, and I'm 38 weeks pregnant. This doesn't sound right, I'd ask for a second opinion

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 24/03/2023 08:34

Usually once after about 3 hours sleep (thanks menopause!) Used to sleep right through every night.

Roussette · 24/03/2023 08:35

Not at all. But that will only be 6 or 6.5 hours as I don't sleep much more than that. Oh and I am late sixties, I hope I carry on like this.

BUT I do go incessantly during the morning and evening and all day really.

Theluggage15 · 24/03/2023 08:36

Not at all and I’m 53. The doctor should be helping you with this not dismissing it.

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 24/03/2023 08:37

I am a similar age to you and a few years ago would regularly get up 3 times a night to pee. It’s not normal.

I have largely managed to break the habit and no usually only get up once and have a few nights a week now where I don’t pee at all. It’s honestly been a bit life changing.

I know you say you need to go, and I know what that feels like but barring something like diabetes causing you to make too much wee, you simply cannot need to go 5 times in 8 hours when you aren’t drinking anything.

In my experience it was a case of short term pain for long term gain. Cutting out caffeine helps as it is a diuretic but largely it is about bladder training and breaking the habit of waking up to wee. Things that helped me were:

  • not drinking anything after 8pm and always having a final wee before bed. That way you KNOW you simply cannot need to pee.
  • not checking the time when you wake up. Checking the time conditions your brain into thinking that time is the time to be awake and you will begin to find yourself regularly waking up around 3:05am as a habit. This is the easy one to break.
  • make yourself wait. Next time you wake up, tell yourself you are not going to pee straight away. It will be uncomfortable at first and you will probably have a few crap nights sleep but this is about breaking the habit.
  • try not to pee habitually during the day time either and only go when you really need to. This will strengthen your pelvic floor.
pandarific · 24/03/2023 08:39

have you any symptoms of diabetes? Have you ever been tested for it? I’m just thinking it could be a kidney thing.

WandaWonder · 24/03/2023 08:47

I have always been like this too, not sure what can be done about it I just expect it

cheeseismydownfall · 24/03/2023 08:49

47 here and never. Neither does DH or any of the tween/teen DC.

MajorCarolDanvers · 24/03/2023 08:51

I'm exactly the same OP. I'm 48 and I've been like this for as long as I can remember.

BooksAndHooks · 24/03/2023 08:52

0, our toilet is downstairs so even if I need to go I ignore it. Very rare to get up in the night.

fussychica · 24/03/2023 08:53

0 or 1 if I've had a bèer or similar before bed. I'm 66.
I think you should go back to your GP, that doesn't sound normal.

inappropriateraspberry · 24/03/2023 08:53

Rarely ever - if I do it's only once. Needing to wee doesn't wake me up, but if I wake anyway and can't get back to sleep, I'll go before I try and settle back down.

kezzieliza · 24/03/2023 08:54

I never get up in the night. I do need to go as soon as I wake up in the morning though.

Snugglemonkey · 24/03/2023 08:54

Never. You should go back to the doctor.
