To ask how many times you get up in the night (to pee)

IconicKitty · 24/03/2023 07:45

I never get a full night's sleep (7-8 hours) without getting up at least once. On a bad night it can be 5-6 times.

GP not interested and I've dealt with this for years. Is this normal for some people?

I've tried cutting out caffeine completely and not drinking liquids for hours before bed. It doesn't help.

Once or twice, usually.

KvotheTheBloodless · 24/03/2023 07:55

Get back to the GP and ask for medication to treat an overactive bladder. He/she shouldn't have sent you away without help, that's disgraceful. Something like solifenacin or tolterodine might really help you, and usually it's only needed short term until your bladder 'learns' to hold more urine without 'complaining' (sending a signal to your brain to wake you up to pee).

Pinacalola · 24/03/2023 07:57

I never usually do and never have unless I've got a UTI

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 24/03/2023 07:57

Do you have swelling in your legs/feet? If so, that could also be a reason.

Harping0n · 24/03/2023 07:58

No this is not right. There are tablets you can take - for a couple of months. They changed my life. Sometimes the bladder gets used to being emptied when it isn’t full. It needs to be retrained

SofaSpuds · 24/03/2023 07:58

Zero, and never have even when I was 9 months pregnant. While I accept that others do, I think 5 or 6 times seems excessive. Your sleep is so broken, you must be wrecked!

WoofWoofBeachLife · 24/03/2023 07:59

It depends how much I've been drinking and how late I drink. I pee a lot during the day too. On average if I've drunk a lot it's maybe twice. Used to be 4 or 5. I've always had this though and never asked about it. If I have a lot of caffeine I'm piddling constantly during the day. I limit now to morning coffee, a tea once I've fed the dogs then a tea around lunchtime. X

Outwiththenorm · 24/03/2023 07:59

1 my whole life and now 2 since having DC.

sanityisamyth · 24/03/2023 08:00

None. Have you been tested for diabetes?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 24/03/2023 08:00

Rarely. Try another GP.

bigbluebus · 24/03/2023 08:01

Very very rarely - and I'm 59.

RobinSong · 24/03/2023 08:01

Do you go a lot during the day as well? It might be that your bladder has learned to send signals too early. I’d definitely go back to a GP.

I’m in my mid-50s, three children, and it is rare for me to need to go during the night.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 24/03/2023 08:02

None

Peckhaminn · 24/03/2023 08:03

Sometimes 1-2 depends if I drink a lot before bed, sometimes I can sleep through it and wake up nearly wetting myself

Nalupa · 24/03/2023 08:05

Once or twice, but that's because I go to bed with a cup of a tea and have water next to my bed for when I wake up in the night. I don't just go to sleep and sleep through a full 6/7/8 hours without waking up a few times, even if I don't need to wee. I'm 27.

gingercat02 · 24/03/2023 08:06

Nearly 54. So infrequently I would say never. My 82 yo Mum says rarely too. Not normal unless you drink a lot in the evenings imo.

WhenDovesFly · 24/03/2023 08:06

I'm 60 this year and get up at least once, usually twice. On a bad night it can be every 2 hours. It's not helped by the fact I've been recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis In my knees and getting up is painful. I know I don't have diabetes as I was tested for that recently and this has been a problem for a while. I really need to see my GP about it as it's seriously disrupts my sleep.

Clarice99 · 24/03/2023 08:08

I never sleep through the night, but I have a small capacity bladder and Interstitial Cystitis.

Even during childhood, I had to get up during the night to go to the loo.

Your GP needs to refer you for urodynamic testing. Can you ask for an appointment with another GP?

BertieBotts · 24/03/2023 08:10

If I get woken up by DC then I go for a wee and usually a whole one comes out. But if I sleep through my bladder doesn't usually wake me up.

DedicatedFollowerOfFashion84 · 24/03/2023 08:10

None. 38. I suspect it’s looming in my future though.

lordloveadog · 24/03/2023 08:10

1, occasionally 2.

Sometimes if my feet have swollen from heat or long journey, then when they shrink I have a night with a lot of wees. But that's unusual and readily explained.

During the day I have to go quite frequently. Suspect overactive bladder and poor pelvic floor. Have to avoid too much coffee. If I start the day with two coffees and nothing else, I irritate bladder.

5-6 times is way too many. You need a different gp.

AnnaMagnani · 24/03/2023 08:11

How old are you?

When I hit peri I was getting up 2-3 times a night.

Vaginal oestrogen and now back to 0.

crowsfeet57 · 24/03/2023 08:12

I used to get up between three and five times a night and like the OP I desperately needed to go. A few weeks ago I was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure and found, bizarrely, that as soon as I was started on medication for the blood pressure my need to get up in the night rapidly diminished. Now I occasionally get up once in the night but usually don't need to go at all during the night.

Maybe see if your doctor will do some tests OP as this is a symptom of diabetes.

BeretRaspberry · 24/03/2023 08:12

Usually once here. And it’s been that way for a long as I can remember. At least since my eldest was born nearly 30 years ago. Sometimes I get up twice but that’s usually related to my fibromyalgia and if I’m having a crap sleep.

Though, occasionally, if I’ve eaten rice or pasta, I can go about 3 times oddly.

SirWalterElliot · 24/03/2023 08:12

0 usually, maybe 1 if I've drunk loads of water before bed (late 30s, 2 kids).
