To wonder about the government warning to our phones.

Does anyone know much about this emergency warning thing on our phones. Can't remember the exact day but in April they're going to test it out. Is it fear mongering again. I'm going to switch it off, anyone else.

Great. I'm sure you'll find it very useful if you choose to have it on your phone. 👍

Mandatory where I live - no opt out. No one talks about it as it’s a non issue.

No opt out on your own phone that you pay for?

Interesting.

Where do you come from?

worth reading what will actually happen rather than conspiracy theories.

Already read it and still choosing to opt out thanks 👍

toomuchlaundry · 25/03/2023 22:44

You tell us we are accusing you of being conspiracy theorists but then talk about it being suspicious that they are doing it on a certain day and that vaccines caused more harm than good

I never said it was suspicious they are doing it on a certain day.
What I actually said was is that the timing is suspicious and I think it is.
It's scaremongering at a time when many people are being bombarded with news that Putin is threatening to use nuclear weapons.

To be honest there isn't much point having a debate with you.
You've shown yourself up to be one of those that fire out insults and accusations because you don't like anyone not sharing your opinion.
It's boring to be honest.

Jonei · 26/03/2023 10:38

allibaby I agree. It's not worth engaging with this type of person.

DogInATent · 26/03/2023 13:12

@allibaby - when wouldn't it be suspicious?
There is always something going on. The rumours of Putin and "nuclear war" are social media scaremongering given credibility by people like yourself. The advice and reports from western governments are quite calm and rational.

Deploying this sort of warning system is always going to be seen by some as suspicious. But why is it we've seen such a growth in the pedlars of suspicion - they're trying to wind everyone up with fear on every topic imaginable, whether it's 5G mobile masts, vaccine hoaxes, 15 minute cities, or the death of cash. Go point your finger of suspicion at these self-important charlatans and fearmongers.

Stugs · 26/03/2023 13:18

I guess that nuclear bomb is nearer than we think! tongue in cheek, sort of

Oh do fuck off with your patronising post.

Putin has threatened the UK with nuclear weapons nothing to do with social media.
I personally think it's sabre rattling but there are a lot of anxious people out there and the government know this so what better timing to play on people's fears and introduce this alert now?

Why have we seen such a growth in pedlars of suspicion?
Erm maybe because our very own government has given us reason to be suspicious.

If you're not suspicious fine but don't force your blind trust onto others especially when it comes to our government.

Stunned1 · 26/03/2023 15:09

TorchwoodWho · 21/03/2023 18:18

I'll be turning it off. I have GAD and no matter what it is, if my phone goes off like that my mind will go straight to "nuclear attack" or similar every single time. I don't have concerns about the government being able to access my phone or whatnot, I just don't want to end up in a panic or having an anxiety attack because I'm being notified there's flooding nearby!

All of this.

I've got a brain aneurysm on top of other conditions and I'm warned that shock/panic/extreme emotions can cause a rupture. I'll pass on this one. I don't need another reason to freak out.

Jonei · 26/03/2023 15:38

They're already here. They are the people who don't accept that others do and will make different decisions. They seek to persuade others that their way is the right way and the only way.

If people don't want an alert on their phone for whatever reason they want, they don't need to have it. Alternatively, if it makes people happier, more secure, connected or whatever, then that choice is there. It does seem to me that the pro alert people aren't just happy with making their own choices though, they also think others should also make the same choices as them. Which is weird behaviour but typical of a certain mindset. Particularly over a choice, whichever one people decide to take, that has no impact on anyone else whstsover.

Clovacloud · 26/03/2023 16:22

They’ve been in the process of testing this for years! As far back as 2013 and I’m sure they were supposed to do it in the early 2000s but never got round to it. Government IT projects are a joke.

But it’s not nefarious just incompetence as usual.

UK government to test mobile phone emergency alert system

The UK government's test of the mobile phone text emergency alert system will run through autumn with around 50,000 participants in three areas across the country

As the saying goes, if it’s a choice between cock up or conspiracy, then it’s usually cock up.

You don't find it questionable then that they only just now managed to get round to it during what is a very anxious time for many?

toomuchlaundry · 26/03/2023 19:49

@allibaby do you not think the timing works with the EU requirement to have a system, or do you think that is linked to our Government too

toomuchlaundry · 26/03/2023 19:49

I've told you numerous times what I think.

As I said before I don't think their is much point in engaging with you because you just resort to the lazy argument of accusing people of being conspiracy theorists if they don't have the same opinion as you.

Clovacloud · 27/03/2023 13:12

@allibaby my prevailing theory is whoever owns the company that has the contract, probably has Tory ties. It’s impossible to see online who that is - which has me suspicious!. So best get a big contract like that in, before the next election which they stand little chance of winning.

AlexFox98 · 30/03/2023 21:09

Because people jump to conclusions.

With the war going on across the world when the country hears of something like this they immediately assume something bad is coming. When in reality they've been testing this system for years, only now is it going national.

Like me who suffer from Anxiety, we see these posts, the conspiracy theories and the fearmongering and that dread sink in, and this happens with more and more people and they spread it more and then scare OTHER people.

AlexFox98 · 30/03/2023 21:12

THIS!!

Seeing someone else finally mention that it's been brought up in the past is so refreshing. The opposite of fearmongering for ONCE.

Well this is a forum for discussion, so if there's a risk that some of the answers in the topics seem scary, then maybe it's better to not open the thread at all. The online world is full of all sorts of stuff after all.

Exactly, if you're that anxious why even open a thread about it?
Makes no sense.

Strange date to pick. It's Eid.

Isn’t that 20th/21st?

I agree, we have no need for these alerts, the government want us in a constant state of fear, on top of them making sure we’re skint and depressed, they want to give us heart attacks blasting out sirens on our phones in the middle of the night. No thanks.

How the hell does the possibility your phone can send an alarm if there’s something you need to know put you in a state of fear? It’ll go off or not go off. I won’t think about it any more than I do the fire alarm at work. And if it dies, I’ll look at it and decide if I need to act.
as for ‘can’t use your phone unless you acknowledge’ - are you serious? You look. You click ok. You get on with your day.
