To wonder about the government warning to our phones.

Does anyone know much about this emergency warning thing on our phones. Can't remember the exact day but in April they're going to test it out. Is it fear mongering again. I'm going to switch it off, anyone else.

A SIREN Blush

Stugs · 24/03/2023 23:02

I've had this in another country- France?? I think it was when there was a heatwave.

Redebs · 24/03/2023 23:03

First I've heard of it.
Strange date to pick. It's Eid.

They brought it in for testing May last year, if that's roughly the time you were there! All EU countries have to implement a system like this, so if you were travelling through a couple might have been others!

toomuchlaundry · 24/03/2023 23:46

If all EU countries are doing it do you still think it is fear mongering from our Government @allibaby?

allibaby · 25/03/2023 10:39

RagingWoke · 24/03/2023 21:51

@allibaby it was supposed to be tested a while back but at the time covid was still rife and it was pushed so as not to cause unnecessary panic. But it seems there will be groups of doom mongering conspiracy theorists no matter when it's tested- but there's no need for facts is there?

Ah the usual "conspiracy theorist" rhetoric that's pushed out when someone has a difference of opinion.
It's such a lazy argument but as you were 😀.

So they delayed it so as not to cause unessary panic you say but have now decided to go ahead with it during a time when Russia is threatening the UK with nuclear weapons.
Yeah cause that makes sense 🙄😂

Crispsdippedinmilk · 24/03/2023 22:20

🤷‍♀️ Yes I did, not claiming to have run them just worked on them like thousands of others.
There's also been many many news stories about government tech projects over years being over budget, under delivered, not delivered, delayed etc etc.

Not saying you didn't but someone always conveniently comes along claiming they have inside knowledge so excuse me being a bit sceptical.

Yes yes I do.

Tiswa · 25/03/2023 10:48

It is starting to be needed though the weather has changed there is far more flooding/storms/high winds than there used to be. The 1987 winds were remembered because it was so unusual now we have them every couple of years.

Nuclear war is still highly highly unlikely. Climate change is on the other hand happening already

Jonei · 25/03/2023 10:56

Oh the days when we just used to check the weather forecast. It's usually quite accurate I find.

Crispsdippedinmilk · 25/03/2023 11:03

you said we're not slow to implement tech as we have the greatest tech minds.
Which just isn't true, what i said was fro. My perspective as I found it laughable but isn't at all "insider knowledge" there are plenty of news articles, gov reports etc that say the exact same thing about how they're always slow to implement, over budget etc I was giving my perspective (as a very junior person in failed projects, nothing really to boast about! ) but it is common knowledge that can be easily read elsewhere too, about the slowness to implement government IT projects.

neitherofthem · 25/03/2023 11:15

Well, even if they do know something we don't, having this system in place is a good idea.

If there wasn't a warning system, just imagine the furore on MN the day <insert monumental catastrophe here> happens.

Exactly!

Jonei · 25/03/2023 11:36

If people think this system is good for them and will make them feel safer, then the option is there for them. 👍

toomuchlaundry · 25/03/2023 11:46

Hopefully, it will be very rarely need to be activated, so really can’t see why people are struggling with it. I don’t see it as any different than a fire alarm but on a slightly bigger scale. And I assume people rushing to deactivate the alert system don’t want fire alarms to be deactivated.

As stated in a previous post, I was in a situation where this system would have been very useful where a reasonably large area of a city was being evacuated.

Also there have been occasions in the area where I live where people have been stranded in their cars for hours on end due to snow. In a couple of instances emergency shelters have been set up. Again an alert system might help in these situations.

Jonei · 25/03/2023 11:58

It sounds like it's going to be really positive for you toomuchlaundry. Thats great if it provides some level of reassurance.

Banditrules · 25/03/2023 12:26

PurplePineapple1 · 22/03/2023 10:28

I also don't see the point of making someone's phone unusable until they acknowledge the alert

Control. The government have decided that you may not use your phone until you acknowledge the alert you didn't ask for. But don't question that, or you're to be dismissed as a tinfoil hat wearer.

On my iPhone when I have 20% or 10% battery, I can’t use my phone until I’ve clicked ‘ok’ on the low battery notification. Are Apple trying to control me? Because this is the same thing.

toomuchlaundry · 25/03/2023 13:01

@Jonei do you think we should never get weather warnings on weather forecasts, or flood warnings on the news? If there is a serious chemical/gas leak in your area would you rather take your chances? Would you rather live in a world of ignorance?

If the government had wanted to put this in place - let's say 5 years ago for arguments sake , do you really think we are that far behind other countries we couldn't have done so?
I just don't believe that

Are people struggling with it or just making a choice to switch it off because they have their opinion, yes THEIR opinion that it isn't necessary?

The fire alarm comparison doesn't stand up really.
Our fire alarms at work are tested every Wednesday but I don't have to acknowledge it before I can get on with my work.

This alert is coming from the government, a corrupt government at that not some phone company you chose to buy your phone from.

I've edited this as I didn't mean it to sound so rude but what I mean is is that the way you worded that makes it sound like someone choosing to disable the alert means they are heading towards certain death by extreme weather or a chemical spill.

Fair enough, on an iPhone when a low battery warning or notification comes up, you have to click ‘ok’ to dismiss it before you can do anything else. This is the same.

This is coming from the government or the emergency services, tbh I don’t care how corrupt the government is, I can’t get worked up about a very occasional warning coming up on my phone to tell me to close my windows and stay indoors because of a fire, or telling me about a local missing child. Clicking ‘ok’ doesn’t take anything away from my day. It’s also arguable that Apple are more corrupt than any government but that depends what you read!

toomuchlaundry · 25/03/2023 15:31

@allibaby do you not accept as technology changes we will have different ways of being notified about things, as stated previously, this is just a more technological means of alerting people, moving on from town crier, church bells and air raid sirens (think there is an naval depot that still uses sirens and does a regular warning test) but most sirens have been decommissioned.

You say it is a corrupt Government but I assume a number of these messages will originate from other organisations other than Central government eg emergency services
