To wonder about the government warning to our phones.

Does anyone know much about this emergency warning thing on our phones. Can't remember the exact day but in April they're going to test it out. Is it fear mongering again. I'm going to switch it off, anyone else.

Could you not say not wanting these alerts are also an example of insane paranoia?

Well you could say that but then that just shows up the narrow mindedness and readiness to label people who have a different opinion to them.
It's a bit pathetic really.

toomuchlaundry · 23/03/2023 11:41

@allibaby I was responding to a poster who said people who wanted these alerts were feeding their insane paranoia

toomuchlaundry · 23/03/2023 13:03

Also @allibaby there are so many posters on MN who don’t read the news, won’t open the door or answer the phone I assume they will add not having emergency alerts on their phone to the list (although if they don’t read the news they might not know about the emergency alert test until it goes off!)

DoraSpenlow · 23/03/2023 13:55

Would you rather we had not moved on from a town crier?

Thanks @toomuchlaundry . I now have coffee sprayed all over my screen😂

That's really didn't happen though did it.

toomuchlaundry · 23/03/2023 14:08

@Jonei think you are embarrassing yourself now

DoraSpenlow · 23/03/2023 14:11

Yes it did. What do you want? A signed witness statement or a filmed reconstruction? Does it really matter? It made me laugh. End of.

Jeez.

If it was an earthquake wouldn't it have already happened by the time alert came through

It was an attempt at humour.

I’ll get my coat…

I'm embarrassing myself because I have a different opinion to you?

That's a bit ridiculous of you isn't it.

You can't blame people for not trusting this ridiculous government. a
After the last 3 years I wouldn't put anything past them.
You can call me a conspiracy theorist as much as you like but I still think the timing of this so called alert isn't an accident.
I also really don't like the idea that you can't use your phone until you acknowledge said alert.

However if you are trusting enough and you like the idea then I respect your choice.

We had quite a large (for the U.K.) earthquake in around 2002/2003 in the Midlands. The 999 call handlers received many calls to inform them it had happened. People are strange!

Do you think the timing is all about making us live in fear. What do you think it's all about?

OP posts:
toomuchlaundry · 24/03/2023 13:57

Surely the timing is because we are so slow and inept in getting our technology in place compared to other countries

We're not though.
We have some of the best tech minds in the world.
They haven't introduced this before because it isn't needed.

Jonei · 24/03/2023 18:20

allibaby yes.

toomuchlaundry · 24/03/2023 18:25

All the news articles I have read on it mention flooding, wild fires etc, which is what many other countries use it for (including countries very similar to ours). Really can't see the problem

Jonei · 24/03/2023 18:27

If you want it, then there isn't a problem, you can have it.

As @Jonei says there is no problem.
Nobody is stopping you from getting the alerts but some of us think it's unnecessary and fear mongering and there's no problem having that opinion either.

I had the great misfortune of working on government tech projects in the past! Delayed, scrapped, repicked up, complete change of directions and years behind schedule, was definetly not out of the norm! The greatest tech minds can't drag you through that hell!

Course you did 😉

RagingWoke · 24/03/2023 21:51

@allibaby it was supposed to be tested a while back but at the time covid was still rife and it was pushed so as not to cause unnecessary panic. But it seems there will be groups of doom mongering conspiracy theorists no matter when it's tested- but there's no need for facts is there?

Crispsdippedinmilk · 24/03/2023 22:20

allibaby · 24/03/2023 21:03

🤷‍♀️ Yes I did, not claiming to have run them just worked on them like thousands of others.
There's also been many many news stories about government tech projects over years being over budget, under delivered, not delivered, delayed etc etc.

L3ThirtySeven · 24/03/2023 22:57

Isn’t this the same system they used to text us when we could book our Covid vaccines? I recall getting government notifications before. It makes sense to now use it to send out public alerts.

No. It's not a text. It's an alert sent to your phone screen, with a direct to accompany it.
