Unsure what to do (daughter can't pee)

Not really an AIBU, unless IAU for not taking her straight to A&E, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever come across something like this? My 10-yeqr-old daughter (who has OCD and can get a bit stressed about going to the toilet) has woken up this morning and "can't pee". She feels like she needs to go but nothing is coming out.

Has anyone ever come across something like this and if so, what did you do? She seems otherwise okay - no temperature, etc. She seems uncomfortable, but not in agony or anything.

Maybe I am being unreasonable in not running her straight to hospital - but I suspect it's going to right itself, although I will follow up because it seems very odd. She has T1 diabetes and OCD as I said, but I don't particularly see how this could be related.

Oh I think this is a symptom of sepsis isn't it? Definitely get her seen today anyway, hope she's ok.

Cnidarian · 18/03/2023 09:06

Sounds like a UTI, call the out of hours doctor for antibiotics and get her drinking lots of fluids

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 18/03/2023 09:06

Have you tried running a tap?

Babsexxx · 18/03/2023 09:06

possibly uti she will need a+e

Quartz2208 · 18/03/2023 09:06

Diabetes is linked to bladder issues and not be able to pee is not good for kidneys - get het seen

Merlinsbeard83 · 18/03/2023 09:07

Get her seen ,may be a uti or linked to diabetes. Don't just wait and see . Must feel very uncomfortable for her

ObamaLlamas · 18/03/2023 09:07

Could be a UTI or a problem with her diabetes. YABU not to get her checker out today.

MissBattleaxe · 18/03/2023 09:08

Get her checked out today.

WeCome1 · 18/03/2023 09:09

When did she last go? Does her bladder feel full to the touch?
If she hasn’t been all night and her bladder feels full, I’d give her ten minutes to wake up, try some sitting in the toilet with the tap on and if nothing then go to A&E.

If it’s not obviously full I’d get her to drink a pint of liquid and if she can’t peed an hour after finishing it go then.

Untitledsquatboulder · 18/03/2023 09:09

Could be a uti. I don't know whether she needs a&e but she def needs to see a doctor. In the meantime she should drink lots.

baytreelane23 · 18/03/2023 09:10

Urine retention can become very very painful as the bladder fills but not emptied. It can also be linked to diabetes so definitely take her asap.

WeCome1 · 18/03/2023 09:10

One other thing to try would be to ask her to pee in the bath, while sitting in the water. If she’s up for the idea.

stbrandonsboat · 18/03/2023 09:12

A warm bath or a hot water bottle placed over the area might help to relax things. If that doesn't work then she definitely needs medical attention urgently.

CosyCoffee · 18/03/2023 09:12

I used to get this as a child and my dm would get me to lean forward on the loo and then tickle the small of my back, and that would make my bladder relax and release the wee. Running a tap is also very helpful.

Jourdain11 · 18/03/2023 09:13

Have tried running taps! She feels like she's bursting to go but nothing is coming out when she tries. I'd have thought a UTI was the opposite usually? She is very uncomfortable and I'm conscious that it could be bad for her kidneys if it continues so will get her seen if nothing changes... just wondering what else we can try first.

She's worried about having to go to hospital (she hates it).

@Jourdain11
Prioritise getting medical help for her today.
111, or walk in centre, or A&E if nothing else available.

She may not be in pain right now, but if she has complete urinary retention, within hours she will be in complete agony.

Plus, the cause, and any interaction with her diabetes, also require urgent attention.

Best of luck.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 18/03/2023 09:14

She needs to see a doctor - as soon as possible really.

x2boys · 18/03/2023 09:14

She has type one diabetes of course it could be linked ,my newly diagnosed 16 year old has a diabetic ketoneacidosis,a few weeks ago and one of the first things they did was catheterise, him you need to get it checked

Dressinggownday · 18/03/2023 09:15

Get her seen NOW. For the love of God! NOW.

She hasn't been since last night, although she did get up and go around 10, 10.30pm I'd say? Her bladder feels and looks full.

I'm going to try to see if she can pee while in the shower!

Sorry but I would stop. Pissing, around asking mumsnet and get her seen 🙄

LunchBoxPolice · 18/03/2023 09:18

Take her to hospital.

Xrays · 18/03/2023 09:18

This is very serious - I say that as someone who’s had chronic UTIs and bladder issues since I was 14 - definitely an A and E job.

MeinKraft · 18/03/2023 09:18

Realistically even if you get her to pee in the shower that's not normal and she will need to be seen anyway, sorry OP - get yourself to A&E asap.

Take her to the hospital. It's urgent. Don't waste more time.
