Unsure what to do (daughter can't pee)

Not really an AIBU, unless IAU for not taking her straight to A&E, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever come across something like this? My 10-yeqr-old daughter (who has OCD and can get a bit stressed about going to the toilet) has woken up this morning and "can't pee". She feels like she needs to go but nothing is coming out.

Has anyone ever come across something like this and if so, what did you do? She seems otherwise okay - no temperature, etc. She seems uncomfortable, but not in agony or anything.

Maybe I am being unreasonable in not running her straight to hospital - but I suspect it's going to right itself, although I will follow up because it seems very odd. She has T1 diabetes and OCD as I said, but I don't particularly see how this could be related.

Forget the shower, please go to hospital straightaway. I'm sorry she doesn't like it, but it can't be helped, you need to get there asap.

Sorry but I would stop. Pissing, around asking mumsnet and get her seen 🙄

I'm also "pissing around" messaging a friend about minding other DC and filling out 111 questionnaire online. DD has a virtual phobia of hospitals and if I can get her sorted our at home and follow up non-urgently, it would be a great deal better. Hence asking for advice.

I hope you're not still reading this and you've called the doctor.
Hope she gets the help she needs Flowers

A&E asap!
Her bladder will be getting overstretched and there is a small tiny tinchy chance this will not go back to normal.

Hopefully they will just put a catheter in and drain the urine out and she will go normally again. Possibly caused by a UTI.

Is she prone to UTIs?

ToughOleBird · 18/03/2023 09:22

This an emergency, take her straight to hospital as it can lead to sepsis. It’s happened to me on several occasions after I’ve had surgery on my bladder. It maybe that her bladder’s empty, they’ll check & put a catheter in if necessary.

TheDogthatDug · 18/03/2023 09:23

She needs to go to A&E. She is a risk of kidney damage.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 18/03/2023 09:23

I’ve had total bladder retention before and the pain was worse than childbirth - hope she can be seen quickly (or let’s go in the meantime).

purpledalmation · 18/03/2023 09:23

Sounds like it may be a uti. Call 111 or maybe out of hours?

Tellyaddict123 · 18/03/2023 09:25

Sit her in the bath my girl couldn’t wee properly when she had a uti the doctors recommended sitting in a bath to help relax etc.

Then get an out of hours GP app through 111

purpledalmation · 18/03/2023 09:25

Sorry didn't read your update. If he bladder looks bulging and she is in pain, you need to go to A&E.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 18/03/2023 09:26

Good that you're on to 111, when she next tries send her with a clean tub so she can try to collect a sample. When you get seen the medical people will need a sample to test for a UTI and if she's struggling to go that could be difficult.

Miscellaneousme · 18/03/2023 09:26

Take her to A&E.

Sounds like they'll catheterise her straight away so shouldn't be a problem.

A and E. She has diabetes and can become very unwell with an infection.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 18/03/2023 09:28

OP you can't fix this at home.

Your DD needs to see a doctor before she gets an infection or sepsis. Stop messing about online and running showers and take her to hospital.

IncessantNameChanger · 18/03/2023 09:28

If 111 don't call back within the hour and she still hasn't been, go to A&E

endofthelinefinally · 18/03/2023 09:29

The most common cause is constipation. A large, hard stool in the rectum blocks the urethra. However, She will need medical assessment and help asap in order to check.

MrsBobBlackadder · 18/03/2023 09:30

I had this - I ended up being blue-lighted to the hospital. It is a very serious condition...

YomAsalYomBasal · 18/03/2023 09:31

If she needs to go, but can't, that is retention. Only way to solve that is realistically going to be a&e for a catheter at this point. Then they'll do urine tests etc. Please go before it damages her kidneys.

NewishT1Mum · 18/03/2023 09:32

For goodness sake!

Your daughter has T1 diabetes - a condition known for kidney issues and has woken up unable to pee and you’re not doing anything about it?

Feeling bursting but nothing coming out is a classic sign of a UTI.

Mooshroo · 18/03/2023 09:32

Yep A&E I’m afraid.

TokyoSushi · 18/03/2023 09:32

Yes agree that you need A&E, hope she's sorted very soon!

HyacinthineMacaw · 18/03/2023 09:35

Inability to pass urine is a medical emergency.

Please take her directly to A&E.

Hope she is feeling better soon.

NewishT1Mum · 18/03/2023 09:38

We have direct access to the children’s ward and can call them anytime to speak to a doctor if there’s a diabetes related issue - can you do this?

WeCome1 · 18/03/2023 09:40

Having seen that she feels bursting, that’s a grab phone charger, wallet and phones and drive/taxi to A&E.
