Unsure what to do (daughter can't pee)

Not really an AIBU, unless IAU for not taking her straight to A&E, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever come across something like this? My 10-yeqr-old daughter (who has OCD and can get a bit stressed about going to the toilet) has woken up this morning and "can't pee". She feels like she needs to go but nothing is coming out.

Has anyone ever come across something like this and if so, what did you do? She seems otherwise okay - no temperature, etc. She seems uncomfortable, but not in agony or anything.

Maybe I am being unreasonable in not running her straight to hospital - but I suspect it's going to right itself, although I will follow up because it seems very odd. She has T1 diabetes and OCD as I said, but I don't particularly see how this could be related.

They certainly can be related, one of my patients had this recently and developed sepsis of the bladder incredibly quickly because of the type 1 diabetes. Get to A&E.

They are in A&E now.

I had this after have a catheter removed for c section. Was unable to go & the pain was horrific!!
Hope you get sorted OP

JanesSadLittleLife · 18/03/2023 12:29

I remember having this when I was 19 after a series of infections and antibiotics - everything shut down!

It was super painful, GP suggested one last attempt to empty by sitting in a warm bath, but if that didn't work then it meant A&E and catheterisation.

Fortunately no sooner was I running the taps, all the muscles suddenly released. Relief!

I did have issues on and off for a few years and chronic UTIs. I hope your daughter feels much better soon OP and survives a horrid hospital visit!

Ouch, thanks.

Ignore all these snidey comments OP. You've done the right thing.

quantumbutterfly · 18/03/2023 12:35

Was talking about this with ds this morning, he's poorly & running a temp. so I've given him fluids but I need him to make sure what goes in also comes out. Plus I checked the temp. of his hands and feet compared to his forehead. He's a late teen so he needs to know self care.

I think OP asked the right question and knew the relevant info., (type 1 diabetes and not peeing properly), did the right thing trying to get her to pee in the shower then contacted 111 then A&E.

Projecting your feelings of inadequacy onto someone else is your Saturday morning hobby?

Ridingfree · 18/03/2023 12:50

Hope she's ok

Fishlegs · 18/03/2023 12:54

Hope she’s ok OP. It was definitely worth trying the shower / bath trick first, as then she could have just seen the out of hours GP afterwards and prevented a stressful hospital visit. There’s been a lot of projection on this thread! I think you’ve done exactly the right thing (shower / 111 before A&E).

Floralnomad · 18/03/2023 12:59

Hope you get it sorted quickly and as painlessly as possible for your daughter @Jourdain11 .

I think this all the time, not about you OP. Ever since my first baby I have been constantly amazed at the idea that I am the front line emergency healthcare for vulnerable children. I don't know anything. I am very well educated but have zero medical /health background. Why on earth I should be expected to know what is an emergency or not is inexplicable.

Hollyhead · 18/03/2023 11:41

Op some of these responses are very unkind, it is a sensible approach to rule out straightforward things first whilst also contacting 111 and your normal diabetes line. It’s not like you’ve left it hours and hours. Please don’t take some of these comments to heart.

Totally agree.

No point rushing to a place that the child feels overwhelming, if it was actually something to do with her OCD... eg... thinks the toilet is "dirty" so is triggering her

Got here and checked in and triaged and she will be seen as a first priority apparently. It's come to light that she's been having trouble weeing for a couple of weeks but she didn't want to tell anyone! I feel bad that I didn't realise, it's worrying what could be causing it as well.

Glad she's being seen ,sorry for the harsh response earlier but my 16 year old collapsed with a DKA a few weeks ago ,( his pancreas was necrotic) he's now type one diabetic,he was as discharged yesterday after four weeks in hospital ,it was terrifying ,I hope your daughter is fine 💐

NCforHairC · 18/03/2023 13:25

@ChesapeakeFan what a sanctimonious and snide response.

I hope she is ok OP. I’m obviously lacking in common sense and basic medical
knowledge too because I wouldn’t have realised this was a medical emergency.

ArtixLynx · 18/03/2023 13:27

happened to me once, its the most god awful experience ever. glad you're at a&E. i was told it was a uti, but i remember being desperate/in tears because i just wanted to pee and couldnt.

Get her seen quickly. Call 111 for advice on it. It is likely an A&E job.

It doesn't take long for urinary retention to become life threatening. Don't mess around with it.

DON'T wait.

FourBoysAndAFeline · 18/03/2023 13:39

Oh, poor love! That must be incredibly uncomfortable, I hope they get it sorted quickly.
