Unsure what to do (daughter can't pee)

Not really an AIBU, unless IAU for not taking her straight to A&E, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever come across something like this? My 10-yeqr-old daughter (who has OCD and can get a bit stressed about going to the toilet) has woken up this morning and "can't pee". She feels like she needs to go but nothing is coming out.

Has anyone ever come across something like this and if so, what did you do? She seems otherwise okay - no temperature, etc. She seems uncomfortable, but not in agony or anything.

Maybe I am being unreasonable in not running her straight to hospital - but I suspect it's going to right itself, although I will follow up because it seems very odd. She has T1 diabetes and OCD as I said, but I don't particularly see how this could be related.

After my c section when I couldn't wee I pushed myself (top half of my body) as far forward as I could and that did the trick - I know it's a different scenario but worth a try.

UTIs can make you feel like you need a wee but usually for me anyway a tiny bit comes out and it stings.

I'd definitely get her checked out if it hasn't corrected itself soon especially if she's bursting for the loo and can't go

Try sitting in a warm bath

She hasn't been since last night, although she did get up and go around 10, 10.30pm I'd say? Her bladder feels and looks full.

I'm going to try to see if she can pee while in the shower!

Did she actually manage to go at that point? If not, you really do need to get her to A & E.

It doesn't matter that she doesn't want to, she doesn't know how bad it's going to get without help.

Anewuser · 18/03/2023 10:20

Good luck OP. Glad to see you’re off to A and E.

When my son had this, our criteria for A and E was 12 hours without passing urine or 500ml fluid.

HowcanIhelp123 · 18/03/2023 10:21

This absolutely is A&E territory. Not being able to wee is an emergency as it can cause significant bladder issues if left full too long. You have to stay in hospital until you pee after an op etc for a reason. After one of them I couldn't and after 6 hours they said if I didn't manage soon they were going to have to catheterise me to empty it.

LakieLady · 18/03/2023 10:24

Hope you're in A&E now, OP, and that you don't have long to wait.

BrutusMcDogface · 18/03/2023 10:25

Oh the poor thing. I’m glad you’re taking her in, and I hope all is ok 💐

SchoolTripDrama · 18/03/2023 10:26

I know it's highly doubtful given her age, but a primary outbreak of genital herpes can do this.
More likely is a kidney infection. Does she have mild pain in her lower back?

SusanSHelit · 18/03/2023 10:28

Not being able to wee is quite serious, she needs a&e

OP has taken her to A&E

Nowthenhere · 18/03/2023 10:38

12 hours without a wee and unable to is called possible urine retention and can cause serious complications if not treated as an emergency.

Trust your mother's intuition.

guinnessguzzler · 18/03/2023 10:39

@WeCome1 Yes, you're right. I should have said or 111 online symptom checker if you can't get through, one hour is definitely too long to wait! It would really be ideal if people could be confident of a quicker response on 111 as that would likely encourage people to use it too but obviously everything is so stretched now.

OP, glad you took her in and wishing her a speedy recovery.

Changechangechanging · 18/03/2023 10:40

OP - I have a type 1. We have been to A&E a couple of times the last year. They do seem to prioritise them and frankly, can’t get rid of them fast enough! Straight up to the children’s ward each time. Just prepare her for having to demonstrate any type 1 tech to student nurses…

Oopsadaisysgranny · 18/03/2023 10:44

Go to an and e as soon as you can . Pop her in a nice warm bath first and tell her it’s ok to pee in the water . If she still can’t go to hospital. Last year I had this problem and ended up with sepsis !!!! Don’t let that happen . Good luck

BCfan · 18/03/2023 10:45

Without a doubt an A&E job

Oopsadaisysgranny · 18/03/2023 10:46

Just seen you’ve gone to hospital. Hope it’s sorted out quickly

Nimbostratus100 · 18/03/2023 10:48

I agree, this is an A and E job, straight away

glad you are taking her- please let us know how she is

ForeverTheOptomist · 18/03/2023 10:53

Have you tried 111? Honestly. A&E. Now.

kateluvscats · 18/03/2023 10:54

No to the drinking of excess fluids, if she's in retention this will make it worse, her bladder will be overfilled and it will be agony.

Urgently

NaomhPadraigin · 18/03/2023 11:10

I hope she's doing OK 💐

Ihategoingtothehairdressers · 18/03/2023 11:12

She has T1 diabetes and OCD as I said, but I don't particularly see how this could be related.

It seems obvious it's related to the diabetes.

Pinkishpurpleyblue · 18/03/2023 11:13

Glad you are going to get her seen hope she is ok.
