Unsure what to do (daughter can't pee)

Not really an AIBU, unless IAU for not taking her straight to A&E, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever come across something like this? My 10-yeqr-old daughter (who has OCD and can get a bit stressed about going to the toilet) has woken up this morning and "can't pee". She feels like she needs to go but nothing is coming out.

Has anyone ever come across something like this and if so, what did you do? She seems otherwise okay - no temperature, etc. She seems uncomfortable, but not in agony or anything.

Maybe I am being unreasonable in not running her straight to hospital - but I suspect it's going to right itself, although I will follow up because it seems very odd. She has T1 diabetes and OCD as I said, but I don't particularly see how this could be related.

Try sitting her in a warm bath and tell her to pee in the water. Watch for the discolouration in the water.

If that doesn't work she needs to be in And E .

Kidney failure is one of the commonest causes of death in T1 diabetes

Mumof3teenagers · 18/03/2023 09:43

Could be related to her diabetes but could also be related to her ocd.
if she’s anxious around toileting, like you said, it could be anxiety/ ocd related.

Try a warm compress at the bladder area. Running taps might help. Try some mindfulness/ breathing exercises/ relaxing music from you tube with a water sound/ theme. Then a warm bath to see if that helps.

If none of that works, a trip to a+e will be necessary alright.
Good luck, hope you get her sorted.

I hope you’re on your way to hospital.

honestly this is a medical emergency. I’ve had this and was catherterized straight away

@Jourdain11
Prioritise getting medical help for her today.
111, or walk in centre, or A&E if nothing else available.

She may not be in pain right now, but if she has complete urinary retention, within hours she will be in complete agony.

Plus, the cause, and any interaction with her diabetes, also require urgent attention.

Best of luck.

This. I really think there should be an auto response on these kinds of threads. This is what 111 is for. As a lay person, I don't know the symptoms or system well enough to know what to do, that is precisely what 111 is for. I know it's not a perfect system but it it can't help at all if people won't use it. And my guess in this case is that if you did call 111 they would advise straight to A&E, meaning you can act fast and feel legitimate instead of worrying that you are wasting people's time. Medical symptoms you don't know what to do about? Call 111. It really is that simple.

She managed to pass a little bit after her shower, but not much - it looks like she's still retaining quite a lot. 111 online said hospital and I can't get through on her diabetes line so I'm going to drive her to A&E now. It's very close.

Thanks for the advice x

111 can take an hour or more to get through to. This actually needs more urgent action than that.
I see your point though.

guinnessguzzler · 18/03/2023 09:47

Sorry, OP, I did also mean to add, I hope your daughter is alright.

Mumof3teenagers · 18/03/2023 09:47

If she’s bursting op and still not passing, straight to a+e …. Only try the mindfulness etc I suggested earlier if she’s not uncomfortable.

RampantIvy · 18/03/2023 09:47

Good luck. I hope she gets seen quickly.

Sorry, that was to @guinnessguzzler I forgot to quote.

Good luck OP.

There is a general feel of it being bad to bother A&E which makes it hard to call sometimes.

Mumof3teenagers · 18/03/2023 09:49

Just saw your update. At least she passed a little, might take some of the pressure off for her.
Best of luck at the hospital, I’m sure she’ll get sorted quickly for you.

BellaJuno · 18/03/2023 09:50

Hope it’s sorted soon, good luck!

Showersugar · 18/03/2023 09:53

TrashyPanda · 18/03/2023 09:59

Hope it goes ok

Redkettle · 18/03/2023 10:04

Hope she's OK. Thinking of you

AllHunsBlazing · 18/03/2023 10:04

I had episodes of this as a child. It was always associated with a stressful situation (which for me was confined spaces e.g. a plane or a busy bus). Once the stress passed, so did the episode. So in theory, it could be linked to the OCD.

I would definitely get her seen. In my 20s I was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis (uti symptoms without an apparent infection), and while the cause is unknown, there could be links to my childhood episodes (whether causation or warning sign). I was very ill for a year, but now have it under control through medication fortunately.

blumppump · 18/03/2023 10:05

Hope you Get her seen and sorted quickly x

Perfect28 · 18/03/2023 10:05

Diabetes is definitely linked to peeing, go see a dr

Tukmgru · 18/03/2023 10:09

Go to the hospital. I had this and it was encephalitis. It’s rare and probably not that but it’s not worth the risk at all, trust me.

Take her to A&E

Popping her in a warm bath may help her pee to relieve any immediate discomfort, but she'll still need treatment.

Another one to say UTI. Suggest seeking out some antibiotics.
