To think there should be a higher minimum age for face tattoos

I think a face tattoo is such a huge decision that there should be a higher minimum age, say 25 or 30, for this. AIBU?

I wouldn't want to see a doctor with a skull tattoo over his entire face.

If he/she had all the required qualifications and experience in the field I was seeing them for, and their patient recovery rates were good, I absolutely would.

Does he have all the required qualifications to be a doctor? If so, then 🤷🏼‍♀️

Harold Shipman had all the required qualifications to be a doctor. Didn't make him someone I would choose to go to for treatment.

JarByTheDoor · 18/03/2023 21:48

Apparently he was a decent GP if you weren't one of the people he murdered.

Florissant · 18/03/2023 22:06

He was such a good doctor other than being a serial killer.

How is this in any way relevant? Are you comparing someone with facial tattoo with a murderer? Or are you just using unrealistic, extreme examples to try and make a point?

Either way, it's bullshit.

@Hartlebury the point is about assumptions. Having a facial tattoo =|= bad doctor. Not having a facial tattoo =|= good doctor.

As a nation, the UK really needs to get over its obsession with appearances and start making judgements on substance.

I bet you wouldn't care if you or someone you loved was in an life threatening emergency

I worked with a lot of theatre staff, anaesthetists included, who had full sleeve tattoos.
You all got through your ops ok without their tats interfering, yes?

Well, yeah, apparently he was generally much-loved as a GP, and showed no sign of being anything other than a caring, experienced family doctor. Until he murdered you. If he'd been any different, maybe he wouldn't have got away with his crimes as long as he did.

My point is that when someone says "Harold Shipman had all the required qualifications to be a doctor. Didn't make him someone I would choose to go to for treatment." — actually, he was the kind of person people wanted to go to for treatment. The things that we might think of as signalling a nice, safe, professional person aren't necessarily reliable indicators, in much the same way as preconceptions about people with tattoos aren't necessarily reflective of reality.

salutsandy · 19/03/2023 08:21

But these doctor arguments are a bit irrelevant as it's about the age of consent for face tattoos, not whether people have them. I think people should get them if they want, just not on impulse when they're 18

But the same applies to many things.
Lots of things you can do at 18 will have long lasting effects.
I think making kids is more serious than facial tattoo....

pointythings · 19/03/2023 09:53

@salutsandy your assumption that people get any tattoo 'on impulse' is very far off the mark. Sure, some people will get stupid drunk and act on impulse - but all the people I know who have tattoos have planned them in great detail, consulted with the artist on the design over time and talked through the process in detail. Yours is a very stereotypical view of the people who have tattoos: you view them as impulsive and not very bright, and of a certain social class. Honestly, people need to get over themselves and stop judging.

No I don't.
