Aibu to not let baby see MIL on mothers day?

So my mum is 2 hours away, MIL 5 mins.

Baby is a few months old and does NOT sleep in the car, we've tried for up to 50 minutes, it does not happen. When she's tired he screams and screams, if well rested she happily looks out of the window and coos.

She also does not nap for more than 20 minutes in the pram.

I'm seeing my mum on mothers day and EBF so taking the baby. I'll have get her to nap on me in the morning (so it's a good one) then leave straight away to get to a town 45 minutes away where my mum will meet me. We've got lunch then a walk around where she will hopefully nap and I can drive home, stopping to feed / calm along the way.

OH has since said he wants to take the baby to his mums in the morning, so she will miss her morning nap and mess up the whole plan for the day, because she will be overtired, cry the whole way there and so be too stressed to sleep in the pram.

I've said no (nicely) as its mothers day and so she doesnt need to be there, just him. He thinks im being unreasonable, am I?

skyandsurf no. But this is an example of what happens when leaving it so long to introduce. Has baby even been tried?
Other similar issues will crop up in the future. I'd be making it a priority and indeed successfully did twice at about ten days

Because I have the boobs and its mother's day so I want to see my mum 😆

How old is your baby?

mumoffourminimes · 16/03/2023 18:29

"Because I have the boobs and its mother's day so I want to see my mum 😆"

A most excellent reason.

But seriously Mother's Day is just another day. My MIL turns into a bloody precious princess on Mother's Day so I veto the whole thing. I think you should suit yourself OP

@cosmiccosmos

Of course..

It's mother's day!

I think a lot of men don't want to see their mothers alone for some reason and they like the other people present to carry the meeting with talk.

My DH is the same. I don't understand it either.

mumoffourminimes · 16/03/2023 18:36

Totally irrelevant @Soontobe60

I'm starting to think there are a load of posters that jump on every thread to tell mothers of young children that whatever they want to do on Mother's Day is wrong.

There was a thread this morning where the MIL organised a lunch that excluded op and her young kids and loads of people told her she was unreasonable because it's not grandmother's day.

My baby shouldn't breastfeed so that he can see my MIL rather than me on mothers day? 🤣🤣🤣

This thread is batshit.

AND READ THE OP'S UPDATES PEOPLE!

It's all sorted. No-one is neglected. The baby can still nap. And the OP won't have to give up breastfeeding specially either.

YANBU and just wanted to say my baby was exactly like this. Events were so stressful, don't let anyone make you deviate from your plans. It will get easier.

RibenaMonsoon · 16/03/2023 22:20

It's so annoying when people suggest using a bottle for the day. If that was an option I'd have done it. My son would have taken a bottle instead. My daughter would have screamed her little lungs out untill she got to breastfeed or fall asleep from crying. She would not take a bottle at all. It totally depends on the baby. Just because it worked for your baby, doesn't mean all breastfed babies will happily take a bottle instead.
I don't understand why people insist that an adults wants trump a baby's needs.

Nor do I understand the bad rap breastfeeding mothers receive. This goes beyond a mere lack of support. I've known several grandparents both on and off this site who assume mothers deliberately choose to breastfeed - the option promoted throughout pregnancy - so they can keep grandparents away from their kids.

Absolutely nuts that a decision mothers make in the best interests of their babies should be deemed an act of spite toward someone else - as though they are front and centre and it really is all about them.

Here's the kicker - it isn't.

All the 'just give her a bottle' comments so GP can get a look in are not taking account of the baby's interests, but the adults'. Anyone who's ever breastfed a baby for any duration knows that even if they will take a bottle (and many don't), once you start interfering with the supply-and-demand basis on which BF operates, you're much more likely to sabotage your supply.

And that's without the issues you'll have if you suddenly veer away from your current feeding schedule. You'll become engorged fairly quickly and will soon know all about the pain and discomfort that causes. Not to mention the leaking all over your clothes, even with breast pads.

It's clear some people don't know what they're talking about when it comes to these issues, but see it as a good opportunity to keep upstart daughter-in-law in her place.

Mothership4two · 18/03/2023 03:19

When did it become a thing that grandmothers had to see their grandchildren on Mother's day? Sure it's likely but it's not a 'right'. Nice if they see their children if it's feasible. Do many adults go and see grandparents on Mother's/Father's Day?

DM lives at the opposite end of the country, so it's card, flowers and phone call from me. I am a mum of boys only.

I just laughed out loud at this 🤣🤣🤣. The baby sure bloody does, i cannot wait for the day I can burn the rocking chair. In the meantime I won't be choosing mothers day to let her skip naps.

Some people on here are truly insane! I wouldn't either OP, I swear by routine, my DC slept through 12 hours by 9 months and had a 2-3 hour nap during the day, which I'm sure came down to being strict about routine and naps

YABU. You are making it as difficult as possible for there to be 30mins is a whole day that your MIL gets to enjoy her son/DIL and grand baby. You seem to want it to be about you, baby and your Mum only. It's not reasonable for your OH to take baby to MIL all morning if baby will be cranky for the afternoon trip, but could she be invited to come for breakfast or coffee, could your OH and MIL join the meal with your Mum and give you and her time alone on the walk?
