m.sundayworld.com/news/northern-ireland-news/school-hit-by-bizarre-claims-students-that-identifying-as-cats-refused-to-use-toilets/2032958934.html

In a nutshell:

A group of students identifying as Cats

Demanding litter trays be placed in the school and smearing poo over the walls & toilet seats.

Restricted toilets access to the rest of the students due to this. Parents going batshit on social media about it, the school having to cut the phones because they're getting hounded.

The school is now apparently having to seek legal advice, as this new territory.

Stop here world, I want to get off!

AIBU that this 'identifying as' has gone too far?

It's a joke but the fact that anyone believed it shows how ridiculous this world is becoming and that to be honest it could have happened because you can identify as a cat nowadays and be taken seriously you could even identify as cat shit and your to be accepted as the norm

TroysMammy · 15/03/2023 09:12

I'd love to see their faces if they had to have their temperature checked 😂.

cupofteaandabiccyplease · 15/03/2023 09:19

I'm late to the party but I thought cats licked their nether regions, should be interesting. 😆
Having said that, why do so many people fall for these daft stories? Some must have missed the queue when brains were being handed out.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/03/2023 09:32

For people who are shouting that, because this particular story may be fake/exaggerated - and, as anything, do bear in mind that just because a certain person or group declare something as fake, that doesn't necessarily make it so - be aware that this is exactly how outrageous things are deliberately introduced and forced to be accepted by large (and often powerful) swathes of society.

It's essentially a form of social haggling. Just like, if you want to sell something for £500, you may price it at £700 and then 'allow them to beat you down' to the £500 that you wanted, you simply invent something ridiculous beyond words in full knowledge that anybody would ever think it to be true - but then they will 'compromise' on something that is still absurd but nowhere near as much as your opening gambit (for now at least).

Thus we have people up in arms about 'catpeople' smearing poo around, killing mice etc. and this is obviously revealed to be a hoax - because catpeople don't do anything as extreme as this: they understand the human society that they live in, so they're just ordinary catpeople, getting on quietly with their lives, and why does it matter so much to you? Result: catpeople ARE a very real thing, nothing to see or debate here.

I don’t think the Bristol university statement was a hoax

According to the LGBTA Wiki the guide linked out to, "someone who is catgender may use nya/nyan pronouns". Nya/nyan means “meow” in Japanese.

What I don't get with this is that, in the human world that these 'catgender' PEOPLE live (not necessarily talking about in this article), we don't refer to actual feline animals with 'meow' pronouns. Cats are always referred to as 'he' or 'she' - or maybe 'they' or 'it' if people don't know their sex.

If we realise full well that, as well as being cats, they are also male or female - and it is the latter that determines their pronouns that we humans use when referring to them.... then why on earth would you think that the sound they make should randomly become their pronoun?

It makes no more sense than it would to replace he and she with 'hello' or 'thank you' as pronouns for (English-speaking) people, just because these are 'sounds' that we often make.

I was talking about the idea of 'social haggling' in general - but the absolute absurd has now pervaded society as accepted 'newtruth' so much that I genuinely don't often know when people are joking or being serious anymore.

Love this, great point!!

The article may be talking about a hoax but a couple of students in my kids secondary school identify as animals. One boy wouldn't speak but would only meow for a while. All the kids thought it was nuts and laughed about it. The poor kid obviously had issues and I blame his parents for allowing that behaviour. He is over it now and talking properly but all the kids still call him a "furry". That episode will follow him forever.

A pronoun guide intended to educate Bristol University staff on gender inclusion has divided opinion due to references to ‘catgender’ and ‘emojiself……According to the LGBTA Wiki the guide linked out to, "someone who is catgender may use nya/nyan pronouns". Nya/nyan means “meow” in Japanese. Catgender is also described as someone who "strongly identifies" with cats or other felines or “experiences delusions relating to being a cat or other feline".

This is from the Independent (and it was covered by several other newspapers) in February last year.

This was very dubious reporting too.

Iirc, the University had a guide which provided a link to an external Wikipedia page, which itself had a link to another page, which itself had a link to another page that referred to ‘catgender’.

Andante57 · 15/03/2023 15:24

This was very dubious reporting too.

I’m very relieved if it’s not true.

SybilWrites · 15/03/2023 06:08

There are a load of furries at my dds' school who identify as cats (and other animals). That's absolutely true! They eat on the floor and wear tails. As far as I know there's nothing sexual about it.

Bullshit.

TroysMammy · 15/03/2023 09:12

😂

Personally, I'd take them all and get them neutered - that would 'fix' them in more ways than one...!

neverbeenskiing · 15/03/2023 15:29

Or should I say catshit?

This article may be rubbish but my friend's son has a girl in his class who identifies as a cat. She wears one of those headband type things with ears on from Claire's Accessories and sits in class Purring. Sheer Stupidity.

JuliesBicycle · 15/03/2023 15:39

Oh come on that is not true.

golightlycat · 15/03/2023 15:42

neverbeenskiing · 15/03/2023 15:29

Bullshit.

Actually there are furries at my daughter's school too. Not sure about their eating habits etc though. I also know a boys who goes to school with a girl who identifies as a cat and wears a tail.

Shulk · 15/03/2023 16:18

I have no doubt that some children sometimes pretend to be, or dress up as, cats and other animals, and would be unsurprised to learn it’s had a bit of a “moment’ courtesy of TikTok.

But the stories about schools catering to this, providing litter boxes, and kids smearing shit all over the place have been pushed by right wing groups and politicians worldwide, are always strongly denied by schools and no actual evidence is ever forthcoming.

SybilWrites · 15/03/2023 17:17

neverbeenskiing · 15/03/2023 15:29

Bullshit.

Actually it isn't. It actually happens at my daughters' school in London.

SybilWrites · 15/03/2023 17:18

I don't think anyone shits on the floor though.

JuliesBicycle · 15/03/2023 17:18

You mean a girl at the school says she would like to be a cat and thinks she looks cute to the boys wearing cat ears?

Naunet · 15/03/2023 17:49

I wanted to identify as a panda because they do sod all every day except eat. It was the boring diet of bamboo that made me change my mind.

Just redefine what is counted as bamboo , you know, like periods are being redefined to include male larping.

Naunet · 15/03/2023 17:49

To what extent does that actually happen, though?

I’ve seen ‘but males don’t have periods’ type posts/threads on here, but they’re usually for products marketed to transmen (who are female), with posters getting their wires crossed.

(I’m sure there are some instances of ‘larping’ out there, but you can find examples of a handful of people doing all sorts of shit via google, that aren’t representative of groups or society at large).

mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 15/03/2023 18:13

The article at the beginning of this thread may be a hoax but there are indeed young people in local schools identifying as cats ….. they are known as ‘furries’ 🐈‍⬛
