To complain about this DPD delivery person??

daisiesdahlias · 14/03/2023 13:39

I was breastfeeding the baby when the door went so I didn't answer it. A note waa put through the door saying the package was left by the back door, I assumed this meant the back gate, accessible from the driveway. I opened my back door and found the package sitting right there, inside my private garden right outside the back door which opens into my kitchen. The back gate was closed and locked (pic attached)

So the delivery person has somehow opened my back gate from the outside and walked into my private garden. I feel like this is absolutely not OK???

Pic - bottom lock is rusted open and broken, top lock is a simple latch. (Yes that is our Christmas tree on the side we dry it out over winter then chop up for garden fires!)

The gate was either unlocked or has a dodgy lock. Give the poor bloke a break. He's trying to earn a living like most of us are

theemmadilemma · 14/03/2023 14:18

So he reached over and lifted the latch? And then put your parcel safely out of sight and shut the gate again on his way out?

What a fucker!

That's not locked. My gates require a key. That's locked. It's locked because dogs maybe out and we don't want anyone to enter the garden.

Your is just latched. Albeit from the inside.

LIZS · 14/03/2023 14:23

A latch is not a lock. They are easy to lift. If he left it 9n the drive it would be less secure.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 14/03/2023 14:24

How do YOU open the gate if it has no handle on the outside? I have never seen a hadle like that that does not lift from both sides Hmm

daisiesdahlias · 14/03/2023 13:44

I'm not sure why people are saying the gate was unlocked? You can see from the picture that it is latched shut? There isn't a handle on the other side

How do you open the gate from the outside if there's no handle?
That bit is odd, mostly because no courier I know would scramble a six foot fence or go to any great lengths if they couldn't just turn a handle, bung it on the patio and leave.

GandhiDeclaredWarOnYou · 14/03/2023 14:27

He reached over and dropped the parcel. I’ve seen them do it often.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 14/03/2023 14:29

A latched gate isn't locked 🤦🏼‍♀️ a latch is just keeping the gate closed.

Cosyblankets · 14/03/2023 14:29

You're not sure why people are saying it wasn't locked?
Let me explain...... it wasn't locked.
There you go

Credit card through the gap and lift?

ToughOleBird · 14/03/2023 14:32

This is not about the parcel is it, it’s about you breast feeding & you’re worried he saw you. Fix the gate & be glad you got the parcel.

malmi · 14/03/2023 14:32

The latch will have a knob on the outside that you can twist to open the latch.

itsmeagainagain · 14/03/2023 14:32

Can we have a picture of the other side of the gate?

Singularity82 · 14/03/2023 14:34

YABVU. Why do you even care?

This. I have the exact same latch and bolt set up (except mine work!).
I would not be able to use the gate from the outside myself if there was no handle on the outside.

IF the handle didn't turn then you can easily stick a small finger or twig between the gate and the fence to raise the latch.

If the bolt is across then it's harder to get in, but obviously not that secure.

CheeseFiend40 · 14/03/2023 14:35

We’ve had loads of delivery drivers over the years go round the back and leave parcels by the back door, or throw them over the gate if it’s locked. Thought this was common practice?!
What an odd thing to be upset about. Also, when you refer to your “private garden” do you just mean your back garden?

OP said it doesn't. Despite the weirdness of this whole thing, she probably does know her own gate!

BobcatDreams · 14/03/2023 14:42

Have you ever gone out that way OP ?
😂😂
Sorry, I'm with pp's they usually come with a latch the other side.
Please don't complain, he put your parcel in a safe space and didn't leave with it, don't see the problem.

Or secret garden maybe 🤷

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 14/03/2023 14:45

We have a latch like yours on our garden gate, and then a door bolt thing at the top of the gate, which is always across.

Delivery drivers reach over and unlock it to drop things in the gardens

As long as they bolt it again when they leave, I don't care

TheInterceptor · 14/03/2023 14:48

Didn't a delivery person lob a parcel through an open upstairs window and it landed on the homeowner's bed? Freaked her out thinking he'd been rummaging through her draw(er)s until the mystery was solved.

KrisAkabusi · 14/03/2023 14:51

He delivered your parcel. What a bastard!

DeadButDelicious · 14/03/2023 14:53

So he put your parcel in a safe place and left a note saying where he'd left it? Can he come and deliver my parcels please?

In all seriousness I wouldn't dream of complaining unless something truly serious happened as I know they have a tough job with targets and often very little job security and they are just trying to get it done. So yes OP, I think you would be being very unreasonable to complain.

SallyWD · 14/03/2023 14:55

This is the new norm. They used to always take parcels back now they've become more inventive about where to hide them. We often get delivery people opening our back gate and leaving them behind the gate. It's fine by me. More safe, not visible from the street. It's such a nuisance when you have to arrange redelivery!

UnsolicitedOpinions · 14/03/2023 14:55

You should contact the delivery company and thank him for bothering to put it somewhere safe.

UnsolicitedOpinions · 14/03/2023 14:56

And no, that is not what locked means!
