To complain about this DPD delivery person??

I was breastfeeding the baby when the door went so I didn't answer it. A note waa put through the door saying the package was left by the back door, I assumed this meant the back gate, accessible from the driveway. I opened my back door and found the package sitting right there, inside my private garden right outside the back door which opens into my kitchen. The back gate was closed and locked (pic attached)

So the delivery person has somehow opened my back gate from the outside and walked into my private garden. I feel like this is absolutely not OK???

Pic - bottom lock is rusted open and broken, top lock is a simple latch. (Yes that is our Christmas tree on the side we dry it out over winter then chop up for garden fires!)

Mine always get lobbed over the gate.

AlisonDonut · 14/03/2023 13:53

They have just put it over the wall.

Simples.

MissingMoominMamma · 14/03/2023 13:53

Oh dear- they just can’t win, can they?

daisiesdahlias · 14/03/2023 13:44

I'm not sure why people are saying the gate was unlocked? You can see from the picture that it is latched shut? There isn't a handle on the other side

So it’s latched shut now, but was it earlier when they delivered the parcel? Probably not.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 14/03/2023 13:53

I think we need to see the other side of the gate.

What would your complaint be? The delivery driver delivered the parcel to a secure location?

Turnipworkharder · 14/03/2023 13:53

It's complaints like this that lead to delivery people leaving the jobs.

Your parcel was delivered safely, so what's the issue ?

PeekAtYou · 14/03/2023 13:53

I assume he threw it over tbh

If it's unlocked (latch doesn't count as locked) then that's probably a potential home insurance issue too as claims assume a secured property

ChilliBandit · 14/03/2023 13:54

Get better gate security. A latched gate isn’t a locked gate. The delivery guy did you a favour in keeping your parcel secure and showing you anyone can get into your garden easily.

Wardrobelion · 14/03/2023 13:55

Why would you even consider complaining about it knowing full well the person could lose their job? That’s bottom of the barrel if you do.

givemushypeasachance · 14/03/2023 13:58

I have this sort of setup - my side gate can latch but not lock. I actively WANT delivery people to leave stuff in my shed around the side, rather than taking it away again. Delivery drivers can't win! Everyone has different expectations.

Mind you - currently I have a note on the front door saying "please don't knock - just leave parcels outside, thanks" and earlier a driver knocked like a bailiff with a small parcel. Aibu that he clearly wasn't paying attention...

Coolblur · 14/03/2023 13:59

YABU for saying your gate was locked. Mine is locked. It has a latch, much like yours, plus a bolt and padlock which is always locked. We added the bolt and padlock because delivery drivers wouldn't always close it properly and one of our dogs got out. If that were your reasoning then YANBU.

Short version, if you don't want people to be able to access your garden, bolt and padlock the gate

gooseduckchicken · 14/03/2023 13:59

So if he left it on a public lane outside the gate for someone to come along and pick it up, you would have been happy?

AdobeWanKenobi · 14/03/2023 14:01

And this, ladies and gents, is why there is a shortage of decent couriers out there.
Wouldn't do that job for the world. Can't do right for doing wrong can they?

Shut
Locked

two different words because they have 2 different meanings. Yours was shut, not locked.

it's very very easy to lift a latch lock.

at my previous house, the back gate was wrought iron, so I guess no feeling of privacy so it didn't bother me if things were delivered through the back gate to the back door step.

When I had a side/back gate like yours I think I probably would have felt a bit like you, EXCEPT, I'd have answered the door with baby still latched on, else I'd leave a note in the door asking them to xyz.

where did you WANT the parcel to be left when you didn't answer the door?

id hate to be a delivery driver second guessing what the person would like.

RightOnTheEdge · 14/03/2023 14:02

You would BVU to complain!
Most people complain that their parcels are left in public view to get pinched or that their parcels are not delivered.
Your parcel got delivered to a safe place.
YAB ridiculous!

purplecorkheart · 14/03/2023 14:02

Sorry was you gate latched shut or locked? There is a difference. Quite frankly if I was you I would be delighted he left the parcel where it was rather than at the front door or the gate where it could have been taken or having to go to the depot to pick it up.

WinterMusings · 14/03/2023 14:03

@daisiesdahlias

But NO I would not be reporting the delivery person!

Bellybootcut · 14/03/2023 14:03

No don't complain. They really can't win.

ScottBakula · 14/03/2023 14:03

I am a bit puzzled as I have never seen a latch like that one that can not be opened from both sides of the gate / door , I thought that was the whole idea of the design.
As pp say I would be grateful that they had take the time and effort to put the parcel somewhere safe .

thisplaceisweird · 14/03/2023 14:04

He's just dropped it over.

Don't report him, just trying to get your package to you safely which he has done

Movinghouseatlast · 14/03/2023 14:05

Delivery drivers have to enter your private space to deliver parcels don't they? He was just trying to leave it somewhere safe surely?

daisiesdahlias · 14/03/2023 13:44

Because it’s not fastened or secured with a lock, by definition it isn’t locked. I’m not sure why you think it is tbh.

I’ve never see this set up with no handle on the other side either. Very strange design. But if it can’t be accessed from the other side he’s either the jolly green giant so could reach over. Or he’s Spider-Man and scaled the wall. Or the most likely explanation he’s chucked it over and you’re freaking out.

Correlation · 14/03/2023 14:11

I’d be really happy the driver took the initiative and left the put the parcel somewhere out of sight

stopringingme · 14/03/2023 14:13

Clymene · 14/03/2023 13:49

Oh my god how dare he try and keep your parcel safe! What an arsehole

🙄

This sums it up perfectly 😀

PearlClutzsche · 14/03/2023 14:14

He delivered it somewhere safe and out of sight, and posted a card to tell you. AND YOU WANT TO COMPLAIN ???

Christ on a bike.
