Does anyone else get fed up with people writing posts with so many confusing abbreviations on here . I’m fed up with them . Can people not just write in English . Even common ones like dh ? Is that direct husband , dickhead husband , dead husband ?? Drives me nuts . Just put husband . There’s loads .
ds , dh, dm , nc , lc , and on and on and on . Even read one today that was gsd ? I thought I’d that a good short dance , or gravy so divine, no it’s what German Shepherd dog 😂😂
Just write English for Christ sake .
Ps I’ve put this on the AIBU page , know idea what it means !

Come on, DH is infinitely better than hubby. Hubby is just cringey .

Well husband then if I’m referring to him in the second person. I personally would use the term hubby but never DH. ‘Yeah me and DH went to the cinema last night’. I just dislike some of the more ridiculous acronyms and this is one of them ‘in my humble opinion’ ;)

Hate it. It’s massively cliquey.

Clique is another word you don't understand.

A clique is a narrow exclusive circle

MN is transparent, open to all, non exclusive.

Majority of forums use the same acronyms, so how is it cliquey?

Flavabobble · 14/03/2023 15:05

CBA rtft, but I've read more than one referring to their DF and got completely the wrong end of the stick until near the end. Is it Dear Father, fiancé or friend? Apparently all three depending on the whim of the day.

MasterBeth · 14/03/2023 15:10

The acronyms suck balls.

You started with two initialisms yourself!!

MasterBeth · 14/03/2023 15:12

TheOrigRights · 14/03/2023 12:10

It's not about twee, it's about speed of writing when using a phone rather than keyboard.

Some of the fancy modern phones have a feature called predictive text which writes out the word for you. You should look into it.

Can you not spot a joke?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 14/03/2023 15:16

GSD or GSP?

Not the same thing you know, one is a German Shepherd Dog, the other one German Shorthair Pointer.

Ceryneianhind · 14/03/2023 15:18

You don't have to come here if you don't like it

LightDrizzle · 14/03/2023 15:19

Once you’ve cracked that the first D is “dear” and -IL is “in-law” it’s not that fiendish. It keeps posts a lot shorter on a forum where proper names aren’t used and multiple relatives might be referenced in one post.

Amispringy · 14/03/2023 15:22

It's really not that hard to pick up

Give me 1000 DHs over a single hubby Envy

MasterBeth · 14/03/2023 15:23

There's no great benefit in posts being shorter.

It doesn't take any longer to read "husband" than it does to read "DH", but it does take longer to interpret who my "ND DN" is compared to my neuro diverse niece.

Anonymous48 · 14/03/2023 15:23

I think it's ridiculous. It really doesn't take any longer to type or read husband than DH or son than DS. I refuse to do it.

HubbaDubba

let’s go mad on it 😜

Hadn’t heard that one but it’s a whole new level of ice! Thanks for that! 😫🤣

So do I. Just as I refuse to use text speak.

I am fully aware of predictive text, I still prefer to use a keyboard.
The fact that the acronyms persist indicate that most of the users are happy to use them. They would evolve out otherwise.

I'd rather be filmed being rimmed down an alleyway than call my husband hubby

A vicious circle. Using insular abbreviations is likely to exclude people who would otherwise provide useful or interesting posts.

Even if common Mumsnet initialisms like DH or AIBU persist, it's self-centred and arrogant to think that everyone shares their frame of reference. As we've seen on this thread, people on here love initialising their illnesses, diagnoses, breeds of dog, job titles etc.

My people!

"Ur" for "your" <shudder>

I even have a friend who writes M instead of I'm when she texts! It makes it so much harder to read.

butterup · 14/03/2023 15:47

Yes why not just my H? I find it very Umbridge that everyone still has to be your dear or darling even when you're bitching about them.

Redebs · 14/03/2023 16:12

I don't like them at all. Silly and a bit coy. When discussing domestic violence are DH and DP the right terms???
And sometimes DP is parent, other times partner.
And all the other meanings of the acronyms too 😳

AcrossthePond55 · 14/03/2023 16:47

Type it out if you prefer. Or use acronyms if that's your choice. The key words being 'prefer' and 'choice'. Just bookmark the acronyms page and if you aren't sure, open it and look it up. Just like we look up/google unfamiliar words or phrases we encounter every day.

I'm not in the UK and often encounter words or phrases that I'm not familiar with. Should I request that posters not use slang or that they put a definition in parentheses? Nope, I just look it up or ask in the thread.

My slang (and insult) vocabulary has increased exponentially since I've been on MN. Some of the time my family now has no idea that I'm talking about. The last incident was when DS2 asked me "Who's Larry?" (as in "Happy as....").
