Does anyone else get fed up with people writing posts with so many confusing abbreviations on here . I’m fed up with them . Can people not just write in English . Even common ones like dh ? Is that direct husband , dickhead husband , dead husband ?? Drives me nuts . Just put husband . There’s loads .
ds , dh, dm , nc , lc , and on and on and on . Even read one today that was gsd ? I thought I’d that a good short dance , or gravy so divine, no it’s what German Shepherd dog 😂😂
Just write English for Christ sake .
Ps I’ve put this on the AIBU page , know idea what it means !

I’d find it horribly twee. I mostly will write the entire word (husband, daughter, whatever) but occasionally use the abbreviations. Particularly stupid ones are when someone’s saying how abusive their spouse is and still put the d (dear??) in. I have to google some as I’ve no idea what they are.

It's fairly standard on the internet and there is a page for helping you understand the acronyms, it's a time saver. The only one I laugh at is DDog as it would be quicker to just write dog 🤦‍♀️

Literally came on to say exactly this!!

I 🤦‍♀️ every time I see it 🤣

And, if you speak Welsh, your brain reads that as 'Thog' 😂

I live for the day I see DFish on one of the pets threads...

starfishmummy · 14/03/2023 12:07

A lot of the acronyms are common across all platforms (DH, MIL etc) bit then there ha e ways been a few I've only seen on here. But it can be confusing - is DD dear/darling daughter, Dad or even direct debit??

TheOrigRights · 14/03/2023 12:08

Forum acronyms have been around since internet forums.

To a newbie they can be confusing. Even dipping your toes in a Topic you don't normally frequent can be trick as one acronym can mean different things in different topics (e.g. GSD, AS, DV).

You need to read them in context and acknowledge that for the majority of users their meanings are perfectly clear.

Single letter codes would be too unclear hence the D preceding H, W, C. I think everyone knows that the author isn't actually thinking Darling!

It's not about twee, it's about speed of writing when using a phone rather than keyboard.

I have always wondered this, I don't see why you wouldn't just write words... it's a mumsnet-specific thing, like a little inside marker, but we're all on the same site so I don't get why... mind you, they do the same thing on most internet forums.

How can you say "it's a mumsnet-specific thing" and then go on to say they do it on most internet forums? 😂

Brendabigbaps · 14/03/2023 08:26

a new one in me this morning, AS? Turns out it’s something son. But what!

Yes! In the end I read it as actual son, no idea why. What other kind of son Is there?!

MeinKraft · 14/03/2023 12:14

You could always FOTTFSOFATFOSM if you don't like it

Pandor · 14/03/2023 12:14

Two letters together, like DH or DD look far more intentional than a random single letter on its own, so your brain acknowledges the meaning faster than it would with a single letter floating in a sentence which could be a typo.

When I read “DS” I don’t think “dear son” , I just know that DS is shorthand for son. That doesn’t feel cringey to me, it’s just a two letter code meaning son.

Abbreviating words is not an MN thing, or an internet thing, it's all over the world of written language.

MeinKraft · 14/03/2023 12:17

'Whilst hubby is revolting, hubster is marginally worse. 😂'

Have you tried getting your hubby to give the baba a feed at night, hubster here feeds bubs every evening while I have a rest xxxx

weightymatters73 · 14/03/2023 12:19

I love the ones where people put DD9, and get lots of "oh you have lots of kids" responses when they actually mean 9 year old DD1.

I agree with this, I don't think "dear" every time I read it, it just helps you realise it's a deliberate abbreviation rather than a single letter that could have just been a typo.

Tiredalwaystired · 14/03/2023 12:29

Hate it. It’s massively cliquey.

ShakeYourFeathers · 14/03/2023 12:31

It's when people say DD4 that I get confused. Do you mean your 4th DD or your DD who is aged 4

MeinKraft · 14/03/2023 12:35

DD4 would be your fourth DD. Your four year old DD should be DD(4)

That's great so long as that's the accepted nomenclature and everyone follows it

I feel like it used to be but it has become muddied over time.

As a PP has explained, this is exactly the purpose of a sociolect and a sign that it is doing its job.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 14/03/2023 12:45

I don't find it cliquey particularly. But then again, I joined MN about 4 years ago and worked most of it out within a day or so. It's really not that hard.

MotherOfHouseplants · 14/03/2023 12:52

People who are in the clique rarely think that the clique is cliquey Grin

seathewayahead · 14/03/2023 12:56

I've been reading here since before I had a husband or kids and I still don't use the acronyms because I don't like them but you get used to them (although sometimes a little confusing when trying to follow a post with multiple family members)

I guess it's just personal preference if you use them or not.

2bazookas · 14/03/2023 12:59

You need to be a bit more flexible and adaptable, it's not hard to acquire new skills and that experience and practice will stand you in good stead for the whole of your adult life.
