Does anyone else get fed up with people writing posts with so many confusing abbreviations on here . I’m fed up with them . Can people not just write in English . Even common ones like dh ? Is that direct husband , dickhead husband , dead husband ?? Drives me nuts . Just put husband . There’s loads .
ds , dh, dm , nc , lc , and on and on and on . Even read one today that was gsd ? I thought I’d that a good short dance , or gravy so divine, no it’s what German Shepherd dog 😂😂
Just write English for Christ sake .
Ps I’ve put this on the AIBU page , know idea what it means !

OP posts:

its just shorthand for speed purposes. It’s really common in loads of contexts, not just the internet/MN

It’s unnecessary though. I always refer to my bloke - autocorrect presents me with it as soon as I type bl

I hate it. And you get stupid things like ddog. 🙄

*@Stillcountingbeans I can see the point of mentioning the school year, instead of age, when it is a post about school, because what children are doing in each school year varies and it could make a difference to the situation.

But if it is not about school, yeah, just put the age.*

I get your point but I can't stand it when people use "year 7" etc thinking the entire UK all know what they're on about 😂 We're all here in Scotland having to do mental maths to work out if that's primary 7 or first year!
So putting the age is a much more helpful thing even when it's about school matters as the English system isn't the one for all of us. Similar to when the bbc bang on about summer holidays or exam results day but as always fail to realise we've been on holiday for 3 weeks already and our results come out beginning of August 😄

I don’t mind DH/DP, we all know what it means, but I do find it difficult when someone’s posting about a family drama and there’s a son, a sister, a stepson, a DN who is ND…

Some people confused them, too. For example, I've seen DP used for partner and for parent.

a new one in me this morning, AS? Turns out it’s something son. But what!

Adult son

PearlClutzsche · 14/03/2023 10:57

Or the dog ones - saw one this morning talking about a GSP - had to google that one.

Oh come on .. the OP actually explained what that was in their OP!

Or DF used for fiancé, friend, or father.

XelaM · 14/03/2023 11:08

Totally agree OP!!!

MirabelMax · 14/03/2023 10:07

Can I also point out that picking on the use of AS in that thread is pretty distasteful given the subject matter

Absolutely, some posts here in poor taste.

I don't read it as Dear Husband/son/daughter, just read it as husband, son, daughter, no dear or darling.

It's a short hand that's old as the hills.

Whats does AS stand for?

CrystalCoco · 14/03/2023 11:10

Most of them I can get my head around but DN for dear niece / dear nephews I'm not keen on as I can't automatically work out who they're talking about

And DS is most often referring to a son so when posters use if for a sister it's confusing

HTH I've had to google many times as it just won't stick in my head!

As for DCat and Dog I just love those 😁

Ahh sorry it's "adult son"

Giggorata · 14/03/2023 11:12

IMO, it’s helpful, rather than typing stuff out all the time.

Turnipworkharder · 14/03/2023 11:16

I agree OP it's bloody confusing. Your brain has to work harder to understand all the ds,dd,dh,dgm, dgf 😫

DodoApplet · 14/03/2023 09:52

A customized glossary would be exceptionally useful, and shouldn't be difficult to implement. Add a button to the bottom of each post to generate a pop-up list of all recognized abbreviations, acronyms, initialisations and initialisms used within that post together with their meanings - with multiple possible interpretations listed where necessary. Even better, add a button to rewrite the post in plain English by feeding it through ChatGPT - which in many instances could also offer a response to the original/opening post.

He he

SoupDragon · 14/03/2023 08:52

And yet you use an abbreviation...

I suspecy @furryfrontbottom was being ironic.......😀

glassblow · 14/03/2023 11:27

In car with DH. NAMALT. DC18 at uni with DFs but Dcats with NDDN and DM as MIL NC, HTH.

OK

babe

Whilst hubby is revolting, hubster is marginally worse. 😂

Rinkydinkydoodle · 14/03/2023 11:35

OnlyFannys · 14/03/2023 08:49

It's fairly standard on the internet and there is a page for helping you understand the acronyms, it's a time saver. The only one I laugh at is DDog as it would be quicker to just write dog 🤦‍♀️

This! I only came on to say my fave is DDog, always makes me smile, especially when read alongside posts from loving cat owners calling them not DCat but ‘that evil wee hairy shitsack’ etc🤣

let’s go mad on it 😜

CatJumperTwat · 14/03/2023 11:44

The hubsternator?

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 14/03/2023 11:48

I don't mind the abbreviations generally but I did have a bit of a WTF moment over DSibIL recently.

Not sure why it was so top secret whether this person was a BiL or a SiL

JenniferBarkley · 14/03/2023 11:50

XelaM · 14/03/2023 11:10

Ahh sorry it's "adult son"

Yes it's Adult Son but the only post I've seen use it in the past few days was someone who referred to her AS dying through suicide a few years ago. Poor taste to come on here and criticise the language used given the subject matter.

MotherOfHouseplants · 14/03/2023 11:52

It's a sociolect, and it has been in place for as long as I've been on Mumsnet (10+ years). Like all sociolects its purpose is to create a sense of belonging and exclude outsiders.

See also the list of shibboleths that posters used to use to show that they were genuine (Pom Bears, naice ham, Brian from Hull, penis beaker, cancel the cheque etc). They seem to have fallen out of use lately.

GlomOfNit · 14/03/2023 11:54

You new here, hon? Grin

All forums have their own abbreviations and 'code', you get used to it fairly quickly, and common acronyms like 'DH' are extremely well-known across lots of different social media forums, so I'm not sure why you're being so odd about it.

Incidentally, please don't make a tit of yourself by coming on and requesting that we all 'write English' when you yourself seem incapable of writing coherent English.

OrlandointheWilderness · 14/03/2023 11:54

Oh I thought AS meant adopted son!
