Because he was speaking the truth and he is entitled to, without being censored.

I am delighted to see the number of other sports commentators supporting him.

Now lets see Davie resign

I don't get the fuss.
It is a very boring case of another rich, privileged, woke celeb supporting a "liberal" cause, no sense or reason required. The only argument = if you're not us, you're Hitler.

I'm not rich enough to afford the views of slebs who are anti-deporting criminals or anti-controlled migration.

I live amidst the consequences of the Liberal posturing.

I don't care for Lineker keeping his football job either way. I'm just surprised that after the BLM scandal the ball chasers haven't learned to keep it zipped.

news.sky.com/story/amp/sir-alan-sugar-tweets-picture-of-jeremy-corbyn-next-to-hitler-11310726

I’ll ask again. Why is it fine for Alan Sugar to mock up a poster of Corbyn standing next to Hitler, and for him to use a Sun article to tell people to vote Tory, and not face the repercussions that Lineker has? If our media is so right wing, why is this acceptable but Lineker’s comment isn’t?

Either we want free speech, in which case both can say what they want on their own accounts and still keep their jobs, or we don’t. In which case neither should keep their jobs. Allowing one to do it but not the other is a slippery slope.

I disagree. The media is heavily left focused.

You can keep saying it but that doesn't make it true.

Tories at the top of the BBC, Tories overwhelming dominating the press.

Start thinking more critically, please.

QueenCamilla · 11/03/2023 23:54

If Lineker does keep his job (and I think he should), I hope the next time the "outraged" walk-out will be over men competing in women's sports or something...
I know, a funny idea that!!

YANBU. I like what a pp quoted about Emily Maitlis, that Gary was allowed to criticise Qatar but not the UK. Free speech my arse.

Ah yes he delivered a pre prepared speech, wouldn't it have been nice if he'd have really shown his discontent by refusing to travel to Qatar and turning down the job? He's an irritant, the BBC is a bag of shite- just get rid of them all.

Saint Gary of Lineker has been warned before about his social media use. In the real world people get sacked for what they post on personal SM accounts

Gary Lineker earns £1.35m for hosting a once a week show

Gary Lineker is embroiled in a case with the HMRC over £4.9m tax they say he owes

Just thought it was worth reminding people that he would normally be castigated on MN

Absolutely - well said - plus his purchase of his Barbados home a few years back avoiding paying tax to the Barbadian government
i bet he’s shitting himself -again- thinking of losing his cushy tax payer funded ridiculously overpaid job

Yep bag of shite sums it up 👍

Exactly my thoughts. Most organisations have rules stating you can't slag them off SM and it is a disciplinary action. The government fund BBC so employees can't slag government off on SM, and keep their jobs.

Bunnyfuller · 12/03/2023 00:13

I quite want a whole bunch of slebs to tell the BBC to stick it. It’s like theTories are going scorched earth before being hoiked out.

The BBC has now shown itself to be 100% biased. To tolerate the BJ loans, Lord Sugar, Jimmy Saville and so on, and they publicly back this govt.

Nope.

Wow, you really have no idea about the role and responsibilities of a pubic broadcaster in a democracy, do you?

This isn't North Korea.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 12/03/2023 00:18

But Alan Sugar is still appearing on The Apprentice? Despite his obvious political comments on twitter? I wonder why? 🤔

Theluggage15 · 12/03/2023 00:18

Lineker is just another overpaid hypocritical windbag, quite happy to Chuck away his so called principles when he was sportswashing the revolting Qatari regime, just like Alex Scott and the rest of them. Oh of course they did wear armbands, stunning and brave.

bellamountain · 12/03/2023 00:22

I'm a cynical old bat and if I truly believed he really cared, he'd have my support for sure.

I just don't believe any of them. Too much talk, not enough action. The bane of society now is endless empty words in the vein of raising awareness but that's where it ends.

TheLostNights · 11/03/2023 23:03

But how can anyone take him seriously when he is so far removed from the reality. He has taken in refugees sure. But you can bet your bottom dollar that they would have been carefully screened and selected. Hardly the same thing as selecting a random young man off one of the boats.
That is what is getting peoples backs up. Being preached to by a multi millionaire who lives very differently to the vast majority of us.

Like Johnson ? Sunak ? Rees Mogg ? Even Bravermann herself.
And the fact that I live in a Northern shithole (also with a fair share of refugees who are dumped in the worst areas but that's irrelevant) has nowt to do with GL and all to do with the Tories and their ineptitude.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 12/03/2023 00:25

It's interesting to see the people trying to argue that the media is mostly left leaning.

I can't work out why they would say this.

Is it that they are just a bit thick and they are genuinely unable to see that this objectively isn't the case?

Is it that they are so far to the right that our right wing media appears left wing in comparison to their fascist views?

Or do they actually know that they are talking shit but it suits them to do so for some reason?

The BBC have massively fucked up here because they have clearly applied double standards. Other big names have been freely allowed to express their views without being taken off air. They can't justify the inconsistency. Also, the timing of their decision makes it really clear that they have acted in response to Tory pressure - if it was simply a question of GL having breached the guidance, then why didn't they announce immediately that they were taking him off air.

Kindofthisnotthat · 12/03/2023 00:27

Lol. Apologists scuttling to defend the tories. How predictable.
How the fuck can they moan about GL when their own party elected Johnson to become leader and the rest of his cronies.

GL hasn’t always been a millionaire. His father ran a fruit and veg stall in Leicester, my DM used to buy her veg from him

Hurrydash · 12/03/2023 00:37

Gosh. Quite a few nasty posts here.
The issue isn't about immigration policy.
Gary Lineker is a BBC presenter and is bound by their guidelines.
He broke them and is prone to the consequences.
If others broke them should be sanctioned too .
Let's hope they are.
But if not that's not a free pass for him.
He has to agree to rein his SM posts in or go and work somewhere else.
Then he can say what he likes subject to the law of the land.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/03/2023 00:39

The idea that only those on the left have free speech is laughable. In recent years the BBC allowed well known right wing figures like Farage and his ilk far more exposure on programmes like question time and newsnight than they warranted. More than prominent figures in Lib Dem's or Greens or SNP etc . They allowed Tory biased journalists/presenters such as Andrew Neill, Laura kuensberg , Fiona Bruce and John Humphries to give Tory's an easy ride and any labour politicians a hard time - there were very few left of centre political journalists in the top roles, And those they had were constantly being nit picked at and criticised - Emily Maitlis and Paul Mason for example. I am absolutely gobsmacked they have still allowed HIGNFY and think it's only because if they cancel it then the game us up as to their impartiality.

Somanycats · 12/03/2023 00:43

I literally cannot think of anyone else who could have flagged up this issue for good or bad to the extent that GL has. This is a spectacular own goal from the Tories and supporters. Who else in the country could have disrupted broadcasting to this extent? Made headline news, got the public talking, got the PM involved?
Obviously the BBC was pressured into this nonsense by the govt stooges, but wtf have they learned nothing from the Marcus Rashford debacle? Within one day there is talk of Tim Davie resigning and Sunak has had to apologise! GL is more popular than the pair of them, can carry the public with him, barely having made a statement all day and yes motd was terrible tonight. Talk about a hill to die on. What was the BBC thinking of? This was never a battle that could be won.

WeAreTheHeroes · 12/03/2023 00:44

He isn't though. He isn't a BBC employee, he's contracted talent. Different set of rules applies. Honestly the management at the Beeb has been spinelessly in the pocket of the Tory govt over this. If he had tweeted in support of this latest policy they wouldn't have said anything.

Several posters have given Lord Sugar's pro Tory tweeting as an example of biased SM posting he hasn't been castigated for. Why has he not been if it's really about impartiality?

It's hypocrisy and cancel culture at it's worst. GL's tweets have no bearing on his ability to do his job and the BBC should have stood up for him instead of kowtowing to this shit show govt which is working to erode our rights.

toomuchlaundry · 12/03/2023 00:49

@MrsandProud a number of posters are saying he doesn’t know what real life is like and I am just saying he comes from quite humble beginnings unlike most of our politicians.

In respect of his tax affairs it is possible that BBC are at fault and HMRC may end up chasing them
