To wonder what part of this statement reminded Gary L of Nazi Germany?

This is Suella Braverman's statement Gary Lineker was reacting to when he said "This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s" ... twitter.com/GaryLineker/status/1633094764865126400

If she was saying she wanted to stop immigration I could understand GL's reaction. But she's not. I don't understand why anyone would not want to "stop the boats" when 1. they're lethal and 2. they're being run by criminal gangs. If GL had made it clear he wanted to stop the boats but thought this policy was the wrong way to do it, then fine. But he didn't - he just made an extremely inflammatory statement. He might be getting lots of love from some quarters, but personally I think he's an egotist who is playing into the hands of the people smugglers.

"It’s all ‘they’ ‘them’. Subtly (not so subtly) taking away the humanity of these people."

Or just using the plural pronoun maybe?🤔

Nobody is denying illegal immigrants are humans

itsgettingweird · 11/03/2023 18:27

See, this is the sort of dumb response that makes me think the reaction is mostly just people who already hated the tories jumping in on an opportunity to misrepresent a controversial policy. How about a bit of objectivity?

Braverman stood in a media interview and said "I dream of the day I see the first plane take off to Rwanda".

Her intonation spews hatred.

I don't like her. That has nothing to do with the party she stands for.

I'm in her constituency . She spews hatred. She ignores anyone who emails her to ask questions that aren't agreeing with her policies.

I'm actually going to frame a reply from her if I ever get one.

Well every single economic study has stated that migration is of net economic benefit to the UK, coupled with the ageing population and extremely low birth rate I'd say that migration is not just desirable, but absolutely necessary

If controlled it can be beneficial, otherwise no

It's our extremist government that doesn't want to control it.

That's why they're weaponising it. And you are falling for it hook, line, and sinker...

And yet we’re all doing exactly what he did - posting on SM. So why is it ok for you to use SM to express your opinion but not him?

seems a bit hypocritical

The contract he signed with the BBC and the millions they pay

You don't need to do a deep-dive into 1930s Nazi propaganda to find similarities, a cursory Google will show you glaringly obvious ones.

Another recent piece of legislation with massive similarities was an amendment to the online safety bill stating that content showing people crossing the Channel in “a positive light” will be illegal and that tech platforms must proactively prevent such content from reaching users.

To draw even more comparisons, the Nazis literally had a plan to ship Jewish people to Africa and abandon them there. Sounds mighty familiar, doesn't it....?

The Holocaust didn't start with people being dragged away in the night and shipped off to their deaths. It's started with othering in the media, a "them Vs us" rhetoric, provocative language about "swarms" overrunning 'us', creating a common enemy/common struggle for people to unite against, controlling the media, controlling elections and the electorate, and so on. It was a steady drip of hate so that by the time it ramped up people would just accept it, they'd turn a blind eye, they'd even actively support it because they'd been conditioned into thinking it was the only way to deal with the problem.

👏👏👏👏👏👏

Not aimed at me however I'll answer.

He is a celeb, he is high profile and works freelance for the BBC where their rules clearly start folk should not post inflammatory political stuff on sm.

Now he can do so but he needs to work elsewhere. What is hard to understand about that? Maybe ITV or Sky may suit but at the moment we the public pay his wages and he should not exploit his platform by voicing uninformed and appalling references to 1930s Germany.

HannibalHeyes · 11/03/2023 18:30

Funny how other people posting on twitter hasn't had the same BBC response...

Please can you stop calling asylum seekers illegal immigrants.

Have you watched this video yet?

twitter.com/crimlawuk/status/1634330359839031301

It explains quite clearly that asylum seekers, which is who we are talking about have an absolute right to claim asylum in any safe country they choose, arriving by any route they choose with or without documentation.

Why the persistent determination to prove Lineker's point for him?

Exactly.
There are situations where people are compared to nazis in order to exaggerate or to shut down discussion, but this is a situation where our government has incrementally brought in more and more laws that go against humans rights, restrict our liberties and attempt to distract voters by othering and divide-and-rule tactics. It's very similar indeed to what the nazis did.

Where in GL's contract does it say he can't tweet about politics? An amazing number of people seem to have read his contract.

willstarttomorrow · 11/03/2023 18:36

The OP and those in support are very successfully demonstrating how the current government are able to shift the rhetoric from their failures and total disregard for the voting public to vulnerable groups. Obviously education in this country has been destroyed to the extent that there is no understanding of history, politics and analysis/challenge has no place on school timetables.

The current government has systematically destroyed public services whilst making the rich richer and consistently blamed immigrants and benefit claimants. The country has been toxically devided since David Cameron's vanity policy (or attempt to cling to power) that ended with Brexit. It almost feels like a civil war.

If you question the shitshow that has brought us to this place you are a 'lefty liberal'- because that is A VERY BAD THING. If you support this government you are a far right, racist arsehole and eat loads of gammon. There are no shades of grey, no one listens to each other. The right wing media are particularly rabid (and are hand in hand with our government. This lot do not even care enough to pretend they are not corrupt). And that is most of our media.....

I can't wait to see the Eye's take on this week. The government do like to give him plenty of ammunition.

Justalittlebitduckling · 11/03/2023 18:37

“to stop the boats that are bringing tens of thousands to our shores”
”the small boats problem”

For me, the issues are:

  1. Careful avoidance of referring to the people in the boats at any point
  2. Insistence that they are arriving illegally when it is not illegal to claim asylum

The current situation is dangerous and needs completely reforming, but this is not the way to approach it. There needs to be ways of applying for asylum before you arrive. Otherwise it’s overwhelming healthy young men who arrive and the most vulnerable (disabled, elderly, young, women) are hugely in the minority.

itsgettingweird · 11/03/2023 18:37

Except they've responded to complaints about Sugar and Packham saying they can say what they like - because they're freehold.

The argument doesn't stand up.

Ah yes-that highly educated historian Gary 'crisps for brains' Linekar!

We must all take note of the daft twat.

He doesn't have to be educated just a moral compass and more than two working Braun cells.
