To wonder what part of this statement reminded Gary L of Nazi Germany?

marmaladeo · 11/03/2023 16:55

This is Suella Braverman's statement Gary Lineker was reacting to when he said "This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s" ... twitter.com/GaryLineker/status/1633094764865126400

If she was saying she wanted to stop immigration I could understand GL's reaction. But she's not. I don't understand why anyone would not want to "stop the boats" when 1. they're lethal and 2. they're being run by criminal gangs. If GL had made it clear he wanted to stop the boats but thought this policy was the wrong way to do it, then fine. But he didn't - he just made an extremely inflammatory statement. He might be getting lots of love from some quarters, but personally I think he's an egotist who is playing into the hands of the people smugglers.

It is very disrespectful to the Jewish community, GL's comments belittle their suffering in the Holocaust. An MP recently lost his place in the Conservative Party for simply quoting a leading Israeli scientist who declared the covid19 vaccine rollout the greatest crime against humanity since the Holocaust. Linekar has gone much further. I don't see how media who attacked that MP can now support Linekar.

Can you explain exactly how GL has gone much further than calling the vaccines the greatest crime against humanity since the holocaust?

Just saying he did does not make it true.

Because a poster said something that wasn’t correct so I posted a stat to show the correct information

If you scroll back you’ll see where I first mentioned it.

It was in response to a misleading post

Oh ok so just a point-scoring battle?

apologies I thought you’d actually provided data that was relevant to the discussion about language or the impact of people arriving in boats. My mistake

SoTedious · 12/03/2023 10:17

One is an MP taking an anti-vax stance in direct opposition to his own party's policy. The other is pointing out facts relating to the language used by government ministers. Two entirely different scenarios. You might as well compare Lineker to my front door.

People jump straight to Nazi Germany and forget there was a deliberate, active and very aggressive (public and government funded)campaign against Jews for a long time before that.
Posters, films, comics, speeches etc all with one purpose and one target. It worked extremely well. Of course it did as it's a tactic that has been used for centuries before and on smaller scales years after that as well.

In fact, most atrocities against various groups of people throughout history have started like that(colonisation, dictatorships, crusades, witch trials, wars, slavery and lack of rights , ww2, communism and so on) Dehumanising, othering, finger pointing, assigning blame.

Just because we pretend to be more civilised now and it doesn't end in mass murder it doesn't mean that those tactics aren't used now, aren't just as effective or damaging .

Just because I didn't kill you with a punch, it doesn't mean I haven't harmed you.

I wish that point was made to our MPs on national TV. Along with clips of the language they have used.

BustyLaRoux · 12/03/2023 10:19

@Janiie no I am suggesting insulting people isn’t helpful on either side. Which I said also in an earlier post. And we will have to agree to disagree that “get back in your box” isn’t inflammatory. I’m not sure most people would agree with you though.
I’m not going to get involved in the debate as I think there are people far more knowledgeable and well informed than me who can make their points (on either side) far better than I could. I will however continue to say that anyone who derails important discussion with offensive, emotive and inflammatory language weakens their argument (again, on other side) and polarises the debate. It’s really important we don’t do that. Calling Leavers stupid and racist was unhelpful. Instead of a focus on facts we ended up in a mud slinging competition which had dire consequences. It’s really important that we don’t do that again!

itsgettingweird · 12/03/2023 10:19

But can you see that you’ve misunderstood the figures now I’ve found the information for you?

But I never misunderstood figures. I didn't ever respond to confirm or deny your figures - because they weren't on the press release I was reading so didn't have any concrete evidence either way.

I quoted figures from another press release and referenced another press release.

But I understand why it suits you to insinuate I don't!

Oh no it was avoiding sarcasm so well! A pity but hey.

It’s mn people correct misleading posts all the time. It’s how it works,

If it offends maybe scroll past. Although out of all the things to object to accurate information is a strange one.

Are you Jewish?

Because the (few) Jewish people I've seen/heard talk about this are not offended and agree with the statement.

However, if the Jewish community did speak out against it I'm sure GL would apologise ... to them and abstain from such comparisons. After all, it's not like there's a short supply of historical or more recent tragedies that he could link this type of language to.

derailing the thread with irrelevant posts is generally considered poor form though

Calling someone illegal apparently makes it true, despite all the evidence and facts being to the contrary, so I fail to see why saying that can't simply be true because someone said it?

BustyLaRoux · 12/03/2023 10:23

@AlisonJo I am Jewish and I’m not remotely offended. Nor any of my Jewish family members or friends. I’m not saying there are not Jewish people who may be offended, but I’m not sure you can speak for the entire Jewish community.

Lineker and my front door do have something in common. They both have more compassion and intelligence than those including the Home Secretary who seem to think that an asylum seeker can be illegal.

So you ask me not once but twice to explain and keep saying I’m not answering if not to satisfaction

It wasn’t irrelevant it was related to the post and showing context. I know it’s a tough one but you do seem to overreact.

I’d say it’s best we ignore each others posts entirely from now on. I can’t say it’s enjoyable to try to meet a what did you mean test over and over

And you don’t get much from it so scroll on by. Happy days.

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2023 10:28

Although people do seem put out by the actual info which I hadn’t considered

Facts are neutral to me but maybe that’s what’s going on

Hmm comparing Gary to an inanimate object, that's a new one. Still I can see where you're coming from though tbh I don't think doors can have compassion or intelligence Grin

FurAndFeathers · 12/03/2023 10:30

I only said you hadn’t answered when you hadn’t. Now you have and I’ve thanked you.

You dislike that I misunderstood your intentions - I had thought you were providing relevant data on the impact of small boat arrivals. I was mistaken. I’ve apologised for that.

you seem very upset about it all 🤷‍♀️

you’re welcome to engage or not as you choose

I don't think it helps persuade people to listen to your views when words like more compassion and intelligence are used.

Getting people to listen to a view, let alone change their mind, is very hard.

That should be one of the lessons learnt from Brexit.

@Janiie Why not include everything that I wrote?

Lineker and my front door do have something in common. They both have more compassion and intelligence than those including the Home Secretary who seem to think that an asylum seeker can be illegal.

If you did, you would see that I was comparing the Home Secretary and others who do not understand that an asylum seeker can be illegal have less intelligence and compassion than a door. That a door has zero compassion or inteligence have you have identified is kind of the point.

Lord Sugar?

Lord Sugar deleted the controversial tweet in your link. Has Gary Lineker deleted his?

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 12/03/2023 10:34

I think people need to stop talking about GL and start talking about how we don’t have an effective and affordable railway system or an NHS that works well. We have a social care system in crisis. We have a Police Service that spends a lot of time painting their cars in the trans flag and banging on about hate crime rather than catching rapists, fraudsters and burglars and if they do catch people a judicial system that is broken and doesn’t actually support the most vulnerable in society. Meanwhile, house prices have risen to ridiculous levels meaning that most people are forced to rent or have a mortgage of a level that leaves little money left over for food or clothes. Human beings are trafficked and enslaved in the UK. Drug dealing in the street in a rural market town is common and county lines is supplying our kids with illegal drugs and drug taking is normal. Our education system tells kids that they can be any gender they want and ignores biology whilst mental health services are overwhelmed with veterans from the wars they they have been sent to and people who have become psychotic from drugs (see above) or people who are confused because everyone is telling them they can become something that they can never be. How many people have been waiting for a council flat for three years or more? How many people have been put in a hotel because they are homeless?. The government needs to focus on the actual priorities not the noise that distracts us all from the sad, sorry state the UK is now in.

Baffled that I thought you were sharing relevant information that would progress the discussion when you were instead just trying to prove someone wrong ?

I guess we just have different expectations of informed discussion.
