To wonder what part of this statement reminded Gary L of Nazi Germany?

marmaladeo · 11/03/2023 16:55

This is Suella Braverman's statement Gary Lineker was reacting to when he said "This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s" ... twitter.com/GaryLineker/status/1633094764865126400

If she was saying she wanted to stop immigration I could understand GL's reaction. But she's not. I don't understand why anyone would not want to "stop the boats" when 1. they're lethal and 2. they're being run by criminal gangs. If GL had made it clear he wanted to stop the boats but thought this policy was the wrong way to do it, then fine. But he didn't - he just made an extremely inflammatory statement. He might be getting lots of love from some quarters, but personally I think he's an egotist who is playing into the hands of the people smugglers.

Are you sure Moonicorn? My understanding is that a lot of men are trafficked into forced labour. In fact the majority of trafficking victims we see in forced labour situations are men. So I wouldn't for a second suggest that 'very few men are trafficked'.

If you're meaning a comparison to women being trafficked in general for sexual slavery or domestic slavery then I do see where you're coming from in that women are higher represented in those categories. But it doesn't mean there's very few men being trafficked.

Albanian men are relocating here to farm cannabis. They get the legal right to stay by claiming to be modern slaves.

Thank you for this link @Mrshook. If anyone feels that Lineker isn’t in a position to be expressing such concerns please read and watch. Here’s someone challenging Braverman on the same issues who absolutely is in a position to understand and challenge.

Safe routes would only increase the number of migrants coming here and most people do not want that, for a multitude of valid reasons.

Well, it’s not an open borders system. The government would have control over numbers entering (compared to now, where they have much less control.)

Btw @Moonicorn I’d really appreciate it if you didn’t tag me in on your abhorrent views about men and your refusal to believe they can be victims of anything. Yes, men can be trafficked, for work in cannabis farms for eg. And if you’ve never had to support someone dealing with complex trauma as they were locked in a house for 2 years with no access to medical care, sunlight or any outside world, then lucky you. You get to believe the “they’re all told what to say” over the evidence of your own eyes and the medical records. I’m just not interested in your unevidenced misandry.

And as for those saying the Tories aren't becoming increasingly right wing... if it walks like a duck...

Well that's enlightened us all hasn't it.

So are borders intrinsically right wing then? Is that for all countries or just the UK? What about Ukraine? Is their border right w

Fair question. Is Labor in Aus right wing?

Do you think the police and CPS are completely incompetent? And the National Referral Mechanism is that easy to access? Victims have been kept waiting for years for decisions.

The government hasn’t even reinstated the modern slavery commissioner (leaving this position unfilled is unlawful, to add to the list). I mean, now we know why but again it means trafficking in the UK will get worse.

ChristmasSirens · 11/03/2023 21:38

marmaladeo · 11/03/2023 17:19

It focuses on stopping the boats, not stopping immigration.

I lived in Australia when they introduced a similar policy. It was also controversial, but it stopped (most of) the boats.

Australia is the opposite of what we want to achieve. Nauru is an abomination that no civilised country should tolerate.

Again, who here is calling for open borders? Can’t see a single post.

LexMitior · 11/03/2023 21:39

It's such dog whistle stuff. I hope they are rewarded with what will happen, total failure, international opprobrium, half a billion to the French, and an election loss.

Braverman can get on with agitating against the ECHR in opposition. I assume that given the right wing nature of the Tories she will survive.

Yes. Most are grunts like I said, low down in the pecking order but still there consensually with a view to ‘rising through the ranks’. They know to say they’ve been trafficked if they get caught. Tactic also used by British criminals.

This is an important point. Some people do not seem to want to live in a civilised country, the rule of law is apparently not important to them.

He is also saying that no one apart from GL, the BBC and their lawyers know what is in his contract. Funny how so many on here seem to know what is in it.

Why are you apparently sneering about the armed forces?!

It's the way it goes. Fortunately for them should there ever be a need, the armed forces still risk their lives for those citizens that hold them in such contempt.

The irony of that snotty remark in the context of lineker appropriating the last world war to castigate us.

Of course those of us that would risk our lives to defend other citizens and our border and have actually done that, are to be treated with disgust as right wing extremists.

Most woolly minded liberals like the posters here didn't want to go to war with Germany either.

Iam4eels · 11/03/2023 17:25

You don't need to do a deep-dive into 1930s Nazi propaganda to find similarities, a cursory Google will show you glaringly obvious ones.

Another recent piece of legislation with massive similarities was an amendment to the online safety bill stating that content showing people crossing the Channel in “a positive light” will be illegal and that tech platforms must proactively prevent such content from reaching users.

To draw even more comparisons, the Nazis literally had a plan to ship Jewish people to Africa and abandon them there. Sounds mighty familiar, doesn't it....?

The Holocaust didn't start with people being dragged away in the night and shipped off to their deaths. It's started with othering in the media, a "them Vs us" rhetoric, provocative language about "swarms" overrunning 'us', creating a common enemy/common struggle for people to unite against, controlling the media, controlling elections and the electorate, and so on. It was a steady drip of hate so that by the time it ramped up people would just accept it, they'd turn a blind eye, they'd even actively support it because they'd been conditioned into thinking it was the only way to deal with the problem.

Well said!

DeadbeatYoda · 11/03/2023 21:43

SquirrelsStars · 11/03/2023 17:31

Lineker is entitled to his views but calling people Nazis (by implication) just because you disagree with them is pathetic and hugely offensive.

I suspect most people would have listened to the statement from Suella Braverman and thought it was reasonably balanced and fair - not on Mumsnet or in many other parts of the internet though - you aren't allowed to diverge from Linker-type views without being shouted down and called names, or demanding that people justify or explain themselves.

😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂

You speak like you’re the only person with experience of anything. You’re not.

On any other mumsnet thread if you try to bring up the ‘victimisation of men’ you get laughed off the thread. It’s only because there’s a racial element that it’s all suddenly ‘not my Nigel/refugee’.

To say these men are not inherently patriarchal or misogynistic (and I mean properly, not just
micro aggressions) is to say women in Northern Africa and the Middle East are lying about their oppression. Are you? If not, why are these migrants less likely to view women as inferior than any of their other countrymen?

And there are very few truly trafficked men. I know this and I stand by it - like I said it’s become a fashionable excuse for low-down grunts in criminal structures across the country, not just Albanians but also British ones.

It’s not good. Most on here would appreciate it if it meant safety for them and their dc. I would.

I don’t think any system re just safe routes will stop the boats and I’m not sure the public will be ok with numbers rising.

Say 200k or 500k or whatever. Is there a point where most feel uncomfortable with number of arrivals?

LexMitior · 11/03/2023 21:45

Don't be stupid. The British Army that fought Hitler was drawn from ordinary men. They were not soldiers. They were civilians.

Civvies, you know. @Anklespraying the British army has never faced a threat in your life time the like of which devastated Europe. You are just dealing out rot. Just in the interests of factual accuracy, prior to the start of WW2 it was right wing newspapers like the Daily Mail "Hurrah for the Blackshirts" that were determined not to go to war with Germany not the most left leaning or liberal ones.

Do you think that all current and ex members of armed forces think that Lineker tweeted inappropriately?

Also I am a little confused by why you would think WW2 was the last war. Rather an insult to the memory of those who have given their lives to protect the country since then I would have thought.

Yet you’re unable to provide any evidence to back this up. 🤷🏻‍♀️
