To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

We take in fewer refugees because we’re far smaller than most European countries. How far do you want to go in giving away our heritage ?

Historically, our heritage owes a lot to people fleeing from other countries: Jews from at least medieval times, Huguenots from the 16th century, Lascars from the 17th, black soldiers following the War of Independence in the US in the 18th, Irish during the famine in the 19th.

They have helped make our heritage and culture what it is today.

Andrew Neil was a long time BBC employee and didn't hide his political views. But that's different isn't it?

Andrew Neil would deny that. He has always said that he is impartial and that no one knows how he votes. You might not agree that he manages that but he understands that as a political journalist he should appear to be impartial.

Andrew Neil would deny it, yes. But the facts say otherwise.

Chairman of The Spectator whilst presenting his BBC shows.
Was fond of sharing his right wing views on Twitter whilst presenting his BBC shows
Wore his Adam Smith Institute tie whilst presenting his BBC shows.

So please, spare me the 'Andrew Neil was impartial' baloney.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 10/03/2023 21:24

Good on all of them.
Tory immigration stance is just a fucking dog whistle to the mail readers to distract attention from every piss poor decision and morally reprehensible decision and politician.
The more people that say this the better.

Rosscameasdoody · 10/03/2023 20:47

I 100% agree with this. Do any of you agreeing with Lineker actually know what went on in Nazi Germany in the 1930’s and how many brave men gave their lives in WW11 to preserve our way of life and defeat Hitler ? If so, you should be ashamed of yourselves for even associating yourselves with what Lineker said. He’s a sports commentator, not a politician and he’s paid so much and is so out of touch with how originally people live, I’m surprised he hasn’t been jumped on by MN, who are normally intolerant of this type of hypocrisy. Shame on you.

He is a man who takes in and supports refugees. he knows very well how disadvantaged people live, probably better than lots of posters on here

He is a man who has ben suspended from his job for disagreeing with the government - as you say he is a sports commentator - why is he subject to the Tory whip?

BBC has announced that MOTD will be aired without a presenter or pundits. Let's see how many people tune in. The punditry is some of the best bits, particularly if there are a lot of goaless draws, or controversy.

Brilliant news.

Wonnle · 10/03/2023 21:25

No studio presenters or pundits tomorrow , all they need now is for the match commentators to withdraw their labour as well and see where that leaves MOTD and the BBC

Is Andrew Neil even still saying he's impartial? I know he used to pretend to be but I thought he'd abandoned that a while ago.

The BBC never was traditionally. Tory’s didn’t like it though, did threats of funding cuts. Unfortunately it’s clearly no longer impartial. See appointment of Richard Sharp.

His appointment doesn't make it impartial. If we go down those lines, then Sue Grays report on Partygate should be thrown out over grounds of bias.
Left wingers always think it's right leaning and right wingers always think it's left leaning. It's always been that for as long as I can remember.

He already does.

You clearly know very little about Linekar.

WWII didn't start until 1939 and ended in 1945. 1930s Germany saw the rise of fascism and of course the Nazis which resulted in war being declared in 1939.

Lineker clearly knows what he is talking about and was very careful with his wording given his care to state 30s Germany. And as a Jew, I agree with him absolutely.

What is really at play here is the Government are outraged that Lineker is not scared of them and will not be silenced - he has an enormous audience on Twitter, over 7 million. He has rightly called out the Government's disgraceful small boats policies, but instead of said policies being scrutinised, particularly the deliberately dehumanising language, the discourse is about Lineker and his tweet. It is classic distraction. Shame on you and others who do not realise that by condoning Lineker, for continuing to concentrate on this rather than the bigger picture, you are part of the problem.

Apricotlemonade · 10/03/2023 21:28

I applaud them. This government is not only useless but vile, they're embarassing. They don’t give a shit about anybody or anything other than themselves, deals for their friends, xenophobia and some ridiculous outdated 1950s vision. Well done Lineker for speaking up and behaving in a way we as a nation should be doing.

Only thing cheering me is the knowledge this government is going to be out of power for a very long time.

UrsulaPandress · 10/03/2023 21:29

Oh big fucking yawn.

Don’t give a shiny shite what Gaz thinks.

Never watch MOTD.

Lochroy · 10/03/2023 21:29

This is awful. As a society, we should be able to recognise differences of opinion and encourage critical thinking.

Cancel culture at its worst.

Well done Lineker, Shearer and Wright.

I truly wish everyone else involved was also able to stand up to this, but it will be harder for those who are employees rather than wealthy freelancers.

Hopefully no one will give them any interviews.

I 100 percent disagree. Dim Gary makes too many public political statements working for a company gaining funding through government.

Funding comes from the public.

pizzaHeart · 10/03/2023 21:29

I admire Lineker and others. He has full support in our house.
At this rate we soon move to watching YouTube as the attitude from BBC bosses becomes unbearable.

The BBC is making an utter arse of itself. I’m with Rafael Behr: ‘So stupid, it actually hurts. All of it. If just a fraction of the lazy honking about Lineker in ink and airtime had been applied instead to evaluating the likely efficacy and motive of the bill ...’.

I'm fine with BBC royalty being expected to keep their personal political views to themselves. They get paid enough and it comes with the territory.

Also, whatever happened to Godwin's Law?

Also, can't take him seriously when he is personally trying to dodge a £5 million tax bill.

we take far fewer than our fair share, there is no disputing that, however you think refugees should be allocated, by population size, by land area, by national wealth

we take a tiny fraction of the number we should take, if refugees were shared out fairly around the world

In a few years time you could be a refugee, and another country could be treating you and your children like this.

Anyone can end up a refugee, it is less likely for Brits, but that is because we are so lucky - nevertheless, it could happen to any of us.

Employee / sub contractor breaks company policy and gets suspended. After repeated warnings.

Will be an interesting test of Tim Davies's nerve. The social media policy bought in by Tim Davie to try to ensure the BBC is seen as impartial was a key part of his early tenure. If he backs down on Lineaker then his leadership won't really be tenable.

Famous people shouldn't be above the rules others have to live by. Newsroom staff have been frustrated by the double standards for a long time.

Nothing about the BBC is impartial. Do you think if Gary L was of the opinion that we need to stop the boats he’d have had the same treatment?
