To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

How far do you want to go in giving away our heritage ?

'Our' heritage IS immigration. By my reckoning:

Beaker people, Romans, Irish, Anglo-saxons, Vikings, Normans, Flemish, Romani, Huguenots, Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi, African and Caribbean, Jews (German, Russian and others), Polish (go my team), and I'm missing lots. Including interesting ones like Berber (Scottish people have some of this).

We are a beautiful mixture and always have been.

Time for Stewart Lee!!

@User174387612 yes - Liverpool born and bred - footy fan since I could watch MOTD - not so much right now as a toffee but yes

I wasn't aware working for the BBC came with a gagging order - so lets stop claiming it does - especially for those not working in the political sphere - although it's fine to offer an ex tory PM £800,000 for a flat!

Embarrassing for you.

Yes, he did, it was a huge sacrifice, his family had to squash up and the kids had to share a bedroom. Oh wait a minute ........

Whether you agree with Gary's views or not, the optics of this are appalling. I cannot fathom what the BBC were thinking.

Exactly this - I can't understand why some people don't see the underlying sentiment with what is going on here in terms of the BBC, the Tories and free speech and impartiality when it suits them.

Oh dear. Is this meant to be some sort of gotcha riposte?

ghostyslovesheets · 10/03/2023 21:16

There needs to be a robust asylum policy in the UK to stop people putting their lives at risk yes - I mean imagine if they made it possible for people to claim asylum in the UK from all over the world - that would negate the need for any trafficking - but they wont - they can't even process people here in any kind of timely manner - I have UAASC still waiting 5 years on!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 10/03/2023 21:16

I did snigger at some japester's suggestion they get Fiona Bruce to host Match of the Day.

I'm going against the grain here. I sincerely disagree with GL's choice of words and Suella's choice of words. However, both are entitled to say them and let people decide whether they agree or not.

I agree with neither of them. I think they are both making themselves look daft and extreme.

Topseyt123 · 10/03/2023 21:17

I totally agree with Lineker and I am glad his fellow presenters have pulled out in solidarity tomorrow. I hope that the ridiculously stupid BBC cannot find anyone to present MOTD tomorrow and are forced into a corner. Idiots!!

They'll probably draft Farage in.

amprev · 10/03/2023 21:18

I would think its a career suicide move for whichever people they can persuade to replace GL and the usual two pundits (Alan Shearer and Ian Wright). They will be accused of being nazi sympathisers or similar because of the binary way in which news is reported now.

Piggywaspushed · 10/03/2023 21:18

Just been announced that MOTD will have no presenters tomorrow...

LlynTegid · 10/03/2023 21:18

I don't agree with Gary Lineker's political comments but he should be able to say them without his employment or contract as a sports presenter being questioned. Same as comedians having opinions, same as Alan Sugar who presents an entertainment programme, same as someone who presents a cookery programme, to give examples.

A public sector broadcaster should not become a state broadcaster, there is a difference.

We do not have a Conservative government, we have one made up of members of the Conservative party.

@MrsTerryPratchett

You wrote, "He's not saying the Tories ARE Nazis, just pointing out that they sound like Nazis, which they do."

That is equaling(sic).

InfluencerHag · 10/03/2023 21:19

@ghostyslovesheets the bloody Neolithic people! Coming over here etc etc....

This makes more sense than involving more people I suppose. What a sign of the dystopia we are living in this will be.

ConfessionsOfAChocoholic · 10/03/2023 21:20

BBC has announced that MOTD will be aired without a presenter or pundits. Let's see how many people tune in. The punditry is some of the best bits, particularly if there are a lot of goaless draws, or controversy.

BeverForget · 10/03/2023 21:20

Stop paying the licence fee.
They make enough to not need it.

RudsyFarmer · 10/03/2023 21:21

I honestly don’t know what I think. I’m caught between freedom of speech being respected and the highest paid BBC employee wildly virtue signalling. I really hate the second but think the first is important.

Aurorabored · 10/03/2023 21:21

’As for the millionaire Lineker, and all the posters saying they are happy for their taxes to fund migrants, I assume they are insulated from the reality for many of living in the UK. People already in this country can’t get access to health care, dental care, education, can’t afford housing, heating and food.’

The politicians demonising immigrants are the same ones responsible for pissing away billions of taxpayers money on dodgy PPE contracts handed out to their cronies. Then Liz Truss managed to cost us £30 billion. But look, boats …

LlynTegid · 10/03/2023 21:22

I urge all football managers to decline to be interviewed on Match of the Day tomorrow. Send the mascot perhaps or no-one. Or someone wearing a t-shirt with a photo of Gary Lineker on.

Why?
I think both of them picked their words carefully.
Neither were insulting to anyone.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 10/03/2023 21:22

Maybe Gary can just lend Boris 800 grand and then the BBC will let him back on.
