To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

By who?

Nobody would agree to even cover this weekend.

I’m guessing everyone’s too scared of being accused far right or a racist.

Didnt Linekar go to Qatar, !?

LookingOldTheseDays · 11/03/2023 08:42

It's extremely depressing that the phrase "virtue signalling" now gets thrown at any person who speaks up for, or campaigns on behalf of a vulnerable group.

If that is 'virtue signalling' (and apparently 'virtue signalling' is a bad thing according to the people who accuse others of it), are they saying they don't think anyone should ever speak up about political issues? I can only assume so.

A PP is right - what it actually means is "I object to you stating an opinion that makes me feel guilty/makes me look bad."

The BBC must have a contractual basis to act, it includes SM private accounts and all those who freelance too

So you are arguing that the BBC should act against its Chairman?

I can certainly agree with that.

Yep. It's like using 'woke' as an insult.

Woke means being conscious of racial discrimination in society and other forms of oppression and injustice.

I'm proud to be woke. Yet you've got the likes of Braverman ranting about 'tofu eating wokerati'

I hate tofu.

The contract is for all presenters. It doesn’t define different ones.
It states all comments in the public domain.

Yep. And a disclaimer isn’t a defence.

It’s pretty comprehensive.

They’ll find someone new and Linkekar can find somewhere else and tweet away.

When I teach leadership I stress the importance of setting a good example.
Do you also think it is important that leaders set a good example?

Clavinova · 11/03/2023 08:49

Roussette
You do know don't you that Gary Linekar has taken a Syrian refugee into his home? And before that a refugee from a province in Pakistan

I thought the young man was Turkish, not Syrian - he stayed with Lineker for approximately one month? He is now studying at university and wants to be a rocket scientist. The refugee from Pakistan was a qualified lawyer and stayed for 20 days. Both were presumably fluent in English.

Ttwinkletoes · 11/03/2023 08:50

I think a lot of people eg possibly Lineker are still v angry about Brexit and anything the Gov does is going to be criticised .
There are several posts on here about Brexit despite it being 8 years ago and not going to change any time soon.

Virtue signalling or looking for false equivalence. None of us are perfect and have streamlined views on the world that wouldn't open us up to accusations of hypocrisy. I am against climate change but I drive a car so immediately I really shouldn't be commenting on climate change I guess? I bet that not everyone who stood up to the Nazis were perfect - I'm sure that an intolerant thought went through their minds at some point so were they hypocrites or just human and brave for taking a stand? People just try and shut down debates by pointing out the human failings of others because they don't behave in a perfect manner at all times and therefore apparently have no right to comment on something that appalls them.

Well @AggieTop this sort of scenario which you describe about your daughter is a very valid and important point. It's a sad fact that a woman cannot walk around safely because of the migrants in the hotels.
It doesn't matter if they are rehoused either, the attitudes towards women remain. I've said it before, the values towards women in particular are not compatible with ours and are putting females at risk. I fear we are heading to a place where sharia law becomes the norm and it seems that this discussion is shut down because if anyone brings it up, they are classed as far right. Healthy discussion always veers on the favour of the left who claim all migrants are hard working, good values, ready to work in the NHS and integrate with British culture and values. If you dare to say otherwise you are told you are a raging right wing racist.
I cannot stand Linekar, he does not live in the real world. I would never listen to someone like him over this issue. Find him a raging hypocrite especially on the whole Quatar scenario. I also think views will be biased here because plenty of MN'ers are upper classes and so like Gary, are not experiencing the same issues such as those who actually are. I'm sure everyone will start disagreeing with me on that but there we are.

Thankyou
I live in Dover and we really really need help
Homes, schools, doctors you name it we have to queue for it and sometimes it’s just too late.

I live in a very white middle class small town and we have to queue for all those things too
Immigrants are not causing those problems. No immigrants will make those problems worse not better as we don't have enough of a workforce in the UK

I'm pretty confident that people are angry at the government for more than Brexit. I imagine that there are many people who were in favour of Brexit and are still angry at the government. Brexit might play a part but there are many things to be angry at the government for than just Brexit.

So are prejudice and anti-semitism OK if directed at immigrants?

That’s not what I said. Of course it’s not OK, but it’s’ not a parallel with what happened in 1930s Germany.

You’re acting like brexit hasn’t been the main issue on the UK’s political landscape since the vote. Brexit wasn’t over at the referendum. We didn’t even leave until 2020 and the Brexit negotiations are the reason the NI collapsed in 2022 and is still non functioning.

I suspect your very white middle class small town has very different reasons for having to queue for these things than Dover. Once again on MN, if you haven’t experienced it, it doesn’t exist.
