To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

I agree with you @Florenz

Gary needs to go as does the bbc really. They have failed spectacularly in remaining impartial over so many issues recently.

I don’t want unqualified, unelected broadcasters spouting their own personal opinions on the BBC thanks.

Regarding immigration the government needs to do everything in their power to stop boats coming into this country. To stop people making that perilous journey, children dying and people trafficking.

They need to introduce a really robust points based system so we are the ones choosing which migrants to accept based in our current economic needs.

Unfortunately we can’t support the constant stream of asylum seekers heading for our shores. We’re in a cost of living crisis and the NHS is on its knees. People need to get real about this.

Rollercoaster1920 · 10/03/2023 22:05

The BBC social media policy changed with Tim Davie's leadership as director general. It was changed to apply to all staff and on screen talent.

I think he is a virtue signaller and does not live in the real world. That's why people are getting annoyed. He tweets from his mansion in leafy Barnes and does not seem to see the other side of taking in asylum seekers. Let's be honest here, they are not all seeking safety, many are young men looking looking for an easy life. Let's not pretend they are all lovely and hardworking either as that is disingenuous.
It should be OK to voice concerns about unknown men coming into the country illegally. We have no idea about their backgrounds. It's ridiculous that people are called racists or bigots for being worried about this. The country is already on it's knees we cannot sustain this.

And whose fault is it that the country is on its knees?
Its definitely not the fault of refugees, they can't even vote.

Notonthestairs · 10/03/2023 22:06

"We simply cannot take in every refugee that wants to come here. There's no reason for ANY refugee to come here as they pass through any number of safe countries to get here."

We don't.
They are free to choose which country they apply to. Sorry.

Curry is the favourite dish of the Brits.
Love it.
Thank the stars for asian spice, black funk and soul, roman roads and baths and our beautiful, rich and diverse cultural heritage,
We are blessed.

I LOVE a Norman Archway!

Catch up @Yulelogs He hasn't spouted anything on the BBC.

@Nimbostratus100 so as well as doctors, nurses coming over on the boats we have teachers also?? Such naivety.

GyozaGuiting · 10/03/2023 21:56

The thing is, Gary is a bit tone deaf, the majority of people ARE concerned about immigration.

We’ve had an increase in migrant arrivals in our area and 2 of the village schools are over subscribed and my friend is having to travel miles for her boy to go to school.

It’s all well and good brandishing those with concerns as far right. But then there’s no nuanced debate about real concerns.
The Swedish Prime Minster recently said they have failed to integrate the vast numbers of immigrants it has taken in over the past two decades, and this has lead to parallel societies, culture clashes and gang violence.

Germany have encountered similar problems, my aunt lives there and the amount of female victim crime is huge in her area (rape, harassment, etc).

I agree with immigration, we need it- I want to help those escaping Afghanistan and Ukraine, persecution in Hong Kong. But it needs to be carefully managed.

The majority? Or you? Ohh your village school has migrants how awful for you. Funny well-absorbed immigrants are in cities, but in the country they’re seen as the end of the world.

Closdifficile · 10/03/2023 22:08

@Lovemelovemydoggie wasn't that the point of Brexit ?

And we are free to turn them back.

Which refugees does Gary Lineker agree we can turn away? No doubt he would say that the government are "cruel" for turning ANYONE away who wants to come here. And they should all be given free homes, generous benefits anyone who has a problem with this is basically a Nazi?

prista · 10/03/2023 22:09

In 1930s Germany:
the nuremberg laws were passed which banned marriage between jews and non jews

kristallnacht - the destruction of Jewish homes and stores - was supported by the government

Jews were entered into forced manual labour

I wonder if the people referring to 1930s Germany don’t know what it was like.

Mirabai · 10/03/2023 22:09

@Yulelogs I don’t want unqualified, unelected broadcasters spouting their own personal opinions on the BBC thanks.

Oh right, whose opinions do you want them to spout?

ghostyslovesheets · 10/03/2023 22:09

we turn away anyone not legal found to have a legitimate claim for asylum - it's not hard!

Notonthestairs · 10/03/2023 22:09

There's an application system - they are assessed. Which bit would you like to rewrite?

User98866 · 10/03/2023 22:09

Any rape committed by a migrant is a rape that wouldn't have happened without immigration

Confused WTAF

GyozaGuiting · 10/03/2023 22:10

Sorry I don’t know who asked for the stats and I’m about to go to bed! But my Aunt lives near Cologne these are the stats…
By April 2016, statistics recorded by authorities indicated that out of the identified 153 suspects in Cologne who were convicted of sexual offenses and other crimes during New Year's Eve 2015–16, two-thirds were originally from Morocco or Algeria, 44% were asylum seekers, another 12% were likely to have been in Germany illegally, and 3% were underaged unaccompanied refugees.[21][22] By July 2016, the police stated that half of the 120 identified suspects of sexual offences on New Year's Eve had arrived in Germany during the year 2015,[1][10] most of those 120 had come from North Africa,[1] and four suspects nationwide had been convicted.[23]

The thing is, immigration CAN be done well. Look how well Caribbean and Indian populations have settled here, and are much valued British members of society. They’re as British as anyone else.

But people need to respect the culture. My aunt is attractive and she gets pestered by especially the new North African arrivals who don’t take no for answer. Germany have started cultural lessons for the new migrants to teach them that a woman not covering up, doesn’t mean she’s ‘up for it’. This is starting to help, and education within their own families too. She has said this side of things had got better.

I don’t think the answer though is let everyone in and don’t think of the consequences. In Germany and Sweden it has had huge problems.

ghostyslovesheets · 10/03/2023 22:11

using dehumanising language to describe immigrants - check
Banning decent om national media - check

WookieMama · 10/03/2023 22:11

Just curious, can you explain what you actually mean by heritage?

Yulelogs · 10/03/2023 22:12

It doesn’t matter whose fault it is that the country is on its knees. If you look at the bigger picture you could blame our whole political system with each government only focussing on goals driven by their own ambition to stay in office.

The point is, we are where we are and this whole immigration mess needs to stop. We can’t afford to look after the citizens we have got let alone be taking in countless asylum seekers each day.

They could stop at any safe country before ours but they don’t. They come here for economic reasons I’m afraid and that needs to end now.

CallintheClowns · 10/03/2023 22:12

GL is not the sharpest tool in the tool box and most times when he talks, it shows.

Most people are very worried about the sheer numbers of immigrants, many who are not running from an unsafe country, but who are economic migrants, coming here illegally. There are proper channels for entry if anyone wants to live here legally and work.

To compare actions to deal with this with the Nazis and use the BBC as his mouthpiece is unacceptable.

If he wants to be political, leave the job, and stand for parliament.

lollipoprainbow · 10/03/2023 22:14

@Mirabai so you think it's acceptable that a child has to go miles to another school??

ghostyslovesheets · 10/03/2023 22:14

Look how well Caribbean and Indian populations have settled here, and are much valued British members of society

yeah = not subjected to racism at all - or economically unequal?

If you want a N*er for neighbour - vote Liberal or Labour' 'No blacks, no Irish, No Dogs' all in my life time - you really believe people where welcomed with open arms?

Hongkongsuey · 10/03/2023 22:14

Florenz · 10/03/2023 21:52

He really is a disgrace and most normal people are against him. He doesn't have to live with the negative effects of porous borders, normal hard-working people do. It's a massive mistake for the left to adopt him as some kind of cause celebre, he appeals massively to the Guardian reader types who are always going to vote Labour, but is a massive turn-off to everyday people, at least some of which Labour needs to vote for them to win an election.

I’m a normal, hard working every day person and I don’t think he’s a disgrace. What are you implying? That normal hard working people all think the same as you?

Apricotlemonade · 10/03/2023 22:14

CallintheClowns

“Most people” bullshit. Most people I know think this policy is abhorrent.
