I've never 'got' her. Just thought she's daft and not funny at all.

Dawn French did a series called Murder Most Horrid and I remember certain episodes actually had me crying with laughter. As someone said comedy is very subjective. Of the current female comedians I just don't get Katherine Ryan- but I'm sure she has her fans.

Oh that series was brilliant! Absolute classic!

I think Jo Brand is funny.
I enjoyed Ab Fab, too.

I would class the Vicar Of Dibley as something that only English people would find funny. Like Keeping Up Appearances.
Only Fools & Fawlty Towers are very English, but the humour is more universal.

I've never found either Dawn French or Jennifer Saunders funny, either together or apart. A few people have mentioned Jimmy Carr - I don't find him funny either. In fact, there are very few comedians that I do find funny, most of them have no natural wit and just shout a lot.

I remember an interview in a magazine where she said her Dad had told her as a young teenager that she was absolutely amazing and never to let anyone tell her otherwise. She said she always carried that with her, even when things were tough. I think some people don’t like that sort of confidence in a woman.

The F&S pastiche of Shakespeare’s Sister song Stay With Me is pure genius.

Jennybeans401 · 11/03/2023 16:09

I think she's good when someone writes for her. She was brilliant in the Vicar of Dibley but I've heard her do stand up which imo wasn't great.

Hairfriar · 11/03/2023 17:14

Maybe then it is because it is of its time. I wasn't even born when the Bananarama song was out and I was 5 when the Alison Moyet song was. So that's maybe it.

Way to sucker punch me Smile. I was a teenager when French and Saunders was on each week. I still repeat some of the catchphrases to the confusion of anyone I'm with. I can't go in a shop without stage whispering "Nick it, nick it!".

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 11/03/2023 20:13

Got the Murder Most Horrid theme tune in my head now!

“It’s reversible Jackie”
if you know, you know!
My sister and I can never pack a suitcase without saying that 🤣

This is hilarious, in my humble opinion. Two Times readers clearly don't find Dawn French funny either 😉

Love the way she's emulated the cover of 'Never Mind the Bollocks ....'

She's gone up even further in my estimation.

VoiceOfCommonSense · 15/03/2023 11:40

She used to be but only because of good writing by other people..

WellTidy · 15/03/2023 11:51

I saw Dawn in panto at the Palladium a few years ago and she was great. Very funny. Not a comedy but I think one of her best works is Roger and Val Have Just Got In. It was absolutely brilliant, and I don’t honk it got anything like the praise it should have received.

I think Victoria Wood is proper genius level. Such huge talent, and I’m still sad that she isn’t with us anymore. Is it on the trolley?

baroqueandblue · 15/03/2023 12:05

Can you point at it?

Roger and Val Have Just Got In is one of the best things I've seen. Incredibly written and acted, poignant and unputdownable.

But I didn't hear about it until years after it was first shown, so perhaps it wasn't promoted very well at the time? A must see for anyone who likes DF, funny or straight.

SerafinasGoose · 15/03/2023 12:07

Acorn Antiques was GENIUS.
