... to think Dawn French isn't funny?

I've never 'got' her. Just thought she's daft and not funny at all.

The whole world seemed to find 'Frasier' funny. Never found it remotely funny. Horses for courses. Don't find Lenny Henry funny either and he's a national treasure.

Ttwinkletoes · 10/03/2023 15:39

The vicar of Dibldy was v good - I was on a village council at one point and she had it to a tee.

Because they’re lumping all female comedians into one homogenous mass, to be found one of two ways: favourably, or not favourably.

The act of referring to them as ‘female’ comedians, suggests they see ‘comedians’ (‘male comedians’) as far more nuanced, not just ‘hit or miss’.

No they aren't, they are saying I find some female comedians funny and some not. They are not talking about male ones. I find the same, I also find male comedians hit or miss if I was asked about them. Now if they were to say female comedians weren't funny, I'd call bollocks

I saw her on some clips from Top of the Pops (the vintage ones from BBC4) with Bananarama and Alison Moyet, presumably they were for Red Nose Day, where she's just photobombing basically and I don't get it at all.

If you listen to her on Desert Island Discs, it will confirm your opinion of her!

Theluggage15 · 10/03/2023 15:40

I think she’s hilarious whereas I think the people you like are as funny as an enema. So what? Pointless thread.

Doesthepopeshitinthewoods · 10/03/2023 15:38

But why does the sex of the comedian come into what you say at all? Why not just say, ‘I find comedians hit or miss’…?

The only ‘defence’ for bringing the sex of the comedian into what you say would be to say, ‘well I don’t find all comedians hit or miss, just female ones.’

Ergo, you like all male comedians.

Sexism aside, that is essentially what you wrote, unless you’re happy to leave sex out of it and concur you find all comedians hit or miss.

Surely you can understand that?

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 10/03/2023 15:41

flutterbyebaby · 10/03/2023 15:36

I find female comedians hit or miss therefore I find all male comedians hilarious? That statement is so illogical. It's like saying I find flat shoes hit or miss therefore I must love all high heeled shoes, you wouldn't be including all shoes in the conversation if you were only talking about flat ones!

'women aren't funny' or 'there aren't any funny female comedians' have been such repeated tropes over the years that I can't help but think that some women believe this too. Maybe ponder that for a moment.

A thread about Michael McIntyre, for example, would be very unlikely to see any 'I've never found any male comedians to be funny' posts. Let's not pretend otherwise.

Because they were talking about a female, if the question was about a male it may be the same answer. Stop looking for shite to get offended over. Going to be quiet now before I end up being rude and getting banned

And some woman believe men are all sexist twats, most of us with a brain know it isn't so

I’m not offended, you’re entitled to your views, but you came across as making a sexist remark, relating to a knackered old trope about female comedians. Maybe just think about what you say a bit more.

Coffeellama · 10/03/2023 14:33

You not finding her funny doesn’t mean she’s not funny. Nothing wrong with different people liking different things. Can’t really see a need to make a thread slagging her off.

@JoanThursday1972

exactly as @Coffeellama said.

there are a LOT of comedians I don't find at all funny & a lot of music I don't like, doesn't mean they aren't good, they're just not for me! But I wouldn't start a thread slagging them off.

you need to binge watch Vicar of Dibley!!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 10/03/2023 15:49

I'm trying to think when I last saw Dawn French on anything. I did like some of French and Saunders' stuff. Vicar of Dibley wasn't my bag. I think she has a funny presence without necessarily being a razor wit.

Fluffymule · 10/03/2023 15:51

Dawn didn't create or write Vicar of Dibley (Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer did) and I find it the least 'funny' of her body of work. She made the character clearly, brought Geraldine to life, but a lot of the writing wasn't great or hugely funny - some of it suffers from attitudes and sensibilities having changed over time, which is not unusual of course.

I find the stuff she writes herself and particularly with Jennifer more appealing and amusing.

mochimoons · 10/03/2023 15:52

Vicar of Dibley is hilarious!! I love the French and Saunders sketches too.

Smartiepants79 · 10/03/2023 15:56

VeryQuaintIrene · 10/03/2023 15:09

"I find female comediennes very hit and miss". Are all male comics by definition hilarious, then?

I was wondering this too!
Surely at this point it should be irrelevant is they are female or not? They are either funny or not.
There are many male comedians that are considered to be incredible but I can’t stand their brand of funny - jimmy car, Ricky gervais, Steve Coogan to name a few.
Its down to personal preference.

Abhannmor · 10/03/2023 16:00

Mitchumforthewin · 10/03/2023 14:35

I wonder if she was perhaps funny at the time but we have moved on. Humour evolves. I used to think loads of things were funny in the 90s which now I don’t find amusing at all (the Mary Whitehouse experience, for example) - see also lots from the 70s/80s - a lot of it doesn’t seem funny at all now, just really puerile. I think she might be one of those sorts.
Having said that, Father Ted which is 25 years old will ALWAYS be funny!

Fr Ted is sort of timeless and universal. In its own little world which will exist forever !

JackiePlace · 10/03/2023 16:02

I agree about Dawn French. The only comedians that I really find funny are Bill Hicks and a few of the Eugene Levy/Rick Moranis/Dave Thomas crew from SCTV.

JackiePlace · 10/03/2023 16:03

Oh yeah, I also like Father Ted. And Fawlty Towers.

JackiePlace · 10/03/2023 16:04

… oh, and the chap on Vicar of Dibley who says no 100 times before saying yes (or is it the other way around?).
And that is definitely it!

Habreathmint · 10/03/2023 16:10

Old French and Saunders was funny sometimes. They're both horribly smug though. I really don't like Dawn French at all though. That rictus grin -shudder.

MuckyPlucky · 10/03/2023 16:14

Her brand of comedy is larking about being kerazy, which some people really like. My own preference is sharp wit / irony / wordplay (which Dawn doesn’t do) but that’s just my own preference.
I really actively dislike humour based on zany-ness.

Schmutter · 10/03/2023 16:21

I think she’s a funny and likeable person.

French and Saunders (the show) was not my thing. I never watched the Vicar of Dibley when it was on, but I’ve seen a few repeated episodes and I think she comes across as funny and charming.

I saw a photo of her on Claudia Winkleman’s IG today that made me laugh.

Yes, there's a fine line between zany/slapstick style comedy and the excruciating tediousness of 'what am I like, I'm mad, me!' people who are never as funny as they believe.

YANBU buut.. I love vicar of dibley
