... to think Dawn French isn't funny?

I've never 'got' her. Just thought she's daft and not funny at all.

The reason Vicar of Dibley was funny was due to the writing (not Dawn French). Dawn French's own writing / improvised stuff is not funny in my opinion. Her books are indeed drivel as someone unthread noted.

Magnalux · 10/03/2023 16:29

I quite like her .. however I picked up one of her books …according to yes, thinking it might be worth a read.. it’s stands out as absolutely the worst book I ever read in my life .. and I’ve read some rubbish in my time !!

thesugarbumfairy · 10/03/2023 16:33

I don't think you're being unreasonable not to find her funny. But that doesn't mean she isn't funny to some people. She obviously is. We just all have different tastes.
I don't find Miranda Hart funny. My best friend thinks she is hilarious. In fact, I rarely laugh at 'comedians' but I think Bob Mortimer is the funniest person in the world and I usually end up with tears rolling down my face having watched him on telly whether its on gone fishing or on would I lie to you or anywhere else he pops up. My best friend doesn't get him at all 😂

IglesiasPiggl · 10/03/2023 16:34

I prefer her as a comedy actress rather than doing sketches. The Vicar of Dibley is fab!

TheaBrandt · 10/03/2023 16:37

Watch her sketch as a middle class mum with a teen Dd who wants to get her ears pierced. Comedy genius!

@JoanThursday1972

exactly as @Coffeellama said.

there are a LOT of comedians I don't find at all funny & a lot of music I don't like, doesn't mean they aren't good, they're just not for me! But I wouldn't start a thread slagging them off.

you need to binge watch Vicar of Dibley!!

Oh I like Vicar of Dibley. It's the stand up etc I don't find funny.

Yes, there's a fine line between zany/slapstick style comedy and the excruciating tediousness of 'what am I like, I'm mad, me!' people who are never as funny as they believe.

Nail on the head!

Oh I won't have a word said against Victoria Wood. She was incredibly talented. She wrote and starred in Dinnerladies. It takes talent to create something that has you goggling one minute and feeling sadness and emapthy the next. If you watch the documentary about Dinnerladies you'll see what a true professional she was.

This, in spades.

I love Victoria Wood.

RobertsRadio · 10/03/2023 16:42

Oh Lord now I'm really, really craving custard creams.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 10/03/2023 16:44

I've never found her funny - nor Jennifer Saunders. Just not my style of humour.

MissMaple82 · 10/03/2023 16:44

Maybe you just have odd humour... Dawn French is hilarious to me

NervousNel · 10/03/2023 16:50

Also have to mention how talented Caroline Aherne was, now that I'm thinking of Victoria Wood and French & Saunders.

Isittimeformynapyet · 10/03/2023 17:01

MuckyPlucky · 10/03/2023 16:14

Her brand of comedy is larking about being kerazy, which some people really like. My own preference is sharp wit / irony / wordplay (which Dawn doesn’t do) but that’s just my own preference.
I really actively dislike humour based on zany-ness.

Yep, me too.

I've always found Lenny Henry bewilderingly unfunny too.

twitterexile · 10/03/2023 17:05

She isn't funny at all.

thatsn0tmyname · 10/03/2023 17:10

Love, love, love French and Saunders.

I'm not sure why you think the fact that you don't like Dawn French should be of any interest or value to anyone else - except, of course, other people who don't like Dawn French. Maybe you can start a club together and wear badges.

Wow

What's with the proliferation of thread police lately

OP's post is perfectly fine. If you don't like it, don't read it

Ponoka7 · 10/03/2023 18:20

It's fine to not find things funny. You'd have to be my age (50's) to realise what a breakthrough the comic strip presents was. She was the quieter of the group, as said her comedy is the gentler type and she went well with Saunders. I wasn't keen on girls on top, but it was popular. I know people who've seen her in theatre roles and she is a good actress. She co-writes. You've got to appreciate her for the era she started out in. Female comedians were still quite sexualised and her, Kathy Burke and Brand had to push through that.

This, absolutely. I wonder if people who enjoy that kind of humour don’t enjoy drier wit or observational comedy? I feel that anyone with confidence could do what Dawn French does, but it takes a certain kind of clever mind to be funny in the way that Ricky Gervais or Sandi Toksvig is (for example).

On top of not finding Dawn French remotely amusing her smugness annoys me half to death.

Yep, same. 'Katanga katanga' and pulling faces and sticking his tongue out hasn't been funny to me since I was about five, and Dawn French has the same 'funny for children' style. No comparison to the comedy genius of the late Victoria Wood and Caroline Aherne (They didn't need to accompany their jokes with a silly facial expression).

@JoanThursday1972 you're forgiven then 😂

However, I still think it's a 'mean' (unnecessary)!thread

Well, I loved Victoria Wood and Caroline Aherne, and I also loved French & Saunders and Ab Fab.

You can appreciate different types of humour. You don't have to pick a team Grin

Florenz · 10/03/2023 22:16

She was funny years ago but not anymore. The same as most comedians who are in their 60s.

CurlewKate · 10/03/2023 22:17

Love all the "I don't find any female comedians funny." People like that always say "female"🤣

Gargantuaetpantagruel · 10/03/2023 22:22

I don't dislike her, but I get a very bullying vibe from both her and Jennifer Saunders. Don't know why, but I've always felt it.

NervousNel · 10/03/2023 22:24

Now I'm going looking for the French & Saunders 'Ponies' sketch Grin
