... to think Dawn French isn't funny?

I've never 'got' her. Just thought she's daft and not funny at all.

The Mary Whitehouse Experience are still v funny today!

Greenpolkadot · 10/03/2023 15:09

Im with you OP,, i agree that she is just daft and childish,
I dont like Miranda or Sarah Millican for the same reason.

I'm not sure why you think the fact that you don't like Dawn French should be of any interest or value to anyone else - except, of course, other people who don't like Dawn French. Maybe you can start a club together and wear badges.

Maybe because this is a board where anyone can post anything for discussion, within reason, of course?

I loved her in the French and Saunders day. Not so much since then.

HarlanPepper · 10/03/2023 15:12

@JoanThursday1972 . It's not really a discussion topic, is itthough? I mean, I don't really see the point of custard creams. That's it - that's my wee story. What is anyone else supposed to do with it?

TheKeatingFive · 10/03/2023 15:13

Plenty of people seem to be discussing it, so if you don't like it, just move on

Custard creams are great. Two with a mug of coffee, highly recommended.

Not as mean as the "tell us your not very nice celebrities" thread! That IS mean.

Do the people who say things like 'I find female comedians hit or miss' find all male comedians hilarious? Confused

I wonder. I don't find Dawn French funny at all, but then I don't find Jimmy Carr funny in the least, but I do like Chris Ramsey, but not his wife very much. I don't think whether they are male or female comedians makes much difference.

I thought I didn't like DF because it was "before my time". But Tracey Ullman is hilarious. IMO anyway. Rosie Jones isn't. Nish Kumar is. IMO of course.

I used to find her quite hit and miss. I found she used her weight as comedy fodder rather too much. Her laughter was rather infectious though

Thedogscollar · 10/03/2023 15:04

Have you read them then? If so why did you continue to read predictable clichéd drivel🤔

I will try anything twice.

Doesthepopeshitinthewoods · 10/03/2023 15:29

She is daft. It’s charming. She sparks off Jennifer Saunders, gives total heart to characters on a page, is very expressive, comfortable in herself and radiates warmth.

You don’t have to like her, but lots do. Her own humour is gentle and observant, but her acting and what she produces with JS is varied and successful.

My favourite sketch of theirs was Sausages and Mash, taking off Rosemary and Thyme.

Why would one mean the other, could you please explain.

Lovelyring · 10/03/2023 15:31

Comedy is so subjective. I avoid most comedy now because I find it more miss than hit. I can't abide comedians who swear all the time - swearing isn't funny? I also have a friend who adores Victoria Wood but she doesn't do it for me at all. They got me to watch Two Soups and I actually found it upsetting!

I have no opinion on Dawn French's comedy but she seems like a lovely lady.

It seems obvious to me, but yes I'll explain. Because otherwise a person would say 'I find comedians hit or miss'.

Because they’re lumping all female comedians into one homogenous mass, to be found one of two ways: favourably, or not favourably.

The act of referring to them as ‘female’ comedians, suggests they see ‘comedians’ (‘male comedians’) as far more nuanced, not just ‘hit or miss’.

Ever hear the saying “two wrongs don’t make a right”?

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 10/03/2023 15:34

I agree with you. Have watched her over the years and she just comes across as smug and annoying.

Some of the French and Saunders stuff was ok.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/03/2023 15:36

I voted YANBU, @JoanThursday1972, because humour is subjective, and people are individuals, so we aren’t all going to like the same things.

I find Dawn French very funny - and both your opinion and mine are equally valid. I am just glad that there are such good comedians out there - now, more than ever, we need a good laugh!

I find female comedians hit or miss therefore I find all male comedians hilarious? That statement is so illogical. It's like saying I find flat shoes hit or miss therefore I must love all high heeled shoes, you wouldn't be including all shoes in the conversation if you were only talking about flat ones!

There is nothing wrong with this thread in order to have to find something to make it right. But if someone really wants to moan about threads then the one I quoted has more capacity for moaning about.

But why does the sex of the comedian come into what you say at all? Why not just say, ‘I find comedians hit or miss’…?

Minimalme · 10/03/2023 15:38

I'm wondering what motivated you to share your opinion op?

There's not much to it really. You are one person who doesn't find one comedian funny.

Possibly the dullest thread I've ever seen.
