... to think Dawn French isn't funny?

I've never 'got' her. Just thought she's daft and not funny at all.

Oh I won't have a word said against Victoria Wood. She was incredibly talented. She wrote and starred in Dinnerladies. It takes talent to create something that has you goggling one minute and feeling sadness and emapthy the next. If you watch the documentary about Dinnerladies you'll see what a true professional she was.

TomatoSandwiches · 10/03/2023 14:44

She was good in VOD, I find her cringey to watch in interviews though, very much me, me, me, obnoxious.

picklemewalnuts · 10/03/2023 14:45

I think it's about a relationship built over time.
So much comedy is effectively an 'in joke', based on expectations of the situation and personalities.
The first episode might be only mildly amusing. By the end of the series it's side splittingly funny.

'Da-vid!'

picklemewalnuts · 10/03/2023 14:46

And Victoria Wood was phenomenal- ahead of her time, to be so successful.

You can think what you like.
Different people find different things and people funny.
Meh

I agree.

I think Rocky Gervais is one of least funny comedian but plenty of people think he’s hilarious

We’re not all given the same brain or something. Feel free to like what you like. The world would be very boring, otherwise

flapjackfairy · 10/03/2023 14:37

She was brilliant in jam and Jerusalem . v v funny series all round in fact.

This was such an underrated comedy. I love it, its a personal favourite. Joanna Lumley is also hilarious.

I also loved Dawn French in Psychoville, with little Freddie Fruitcake. 🤣🤣🤣

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 10/03/2023 14:47

Never understood the adulation. I find her completely tedious and totally unfunny, but that's personal opinion and humour is subjective.

SaySomethingMan · 10/03/2023 14:48

monsterradeliciosa · 10/03/2023 14:36

I've been rewatching French and Saunders and vehemently disagree.

I’ve never seen it. I’ll try it.
I enjoyed watching her in the V of D

Crikeyalmighty · 10/03/2023 14:50

I find female comediennes very hit and miss but I did like plenty of Dawns work- same with Victoria wood- hated dinner ladies but loved her stand up. I am very partial to Jo brand!!

It's lovely for the nostalgia too. It was on TV when I was a kid so didn't get many of the references and it's funnier now than it was then and I really marvel at Jennifer Saunders's talent and beauty.

Check out the instagram page. I've been laughing at this for weeks since discovering it www.instagram.com/kitschntiles/

MockneyReject · 10/03/2023 14:52

Same. I just don't 'get' her/her comedy. I don't think I've ever laughed at Lenny Henry, either.
Agree with Jo Brand. From that era, Tracey Ullman stands out.
I find Roisin Conaty funny - in sitcoms as well as on panel shows. I like Diane Morgan in most stuff, but not everything.

Thedogscollar · 10/03/2023 14:53

Well she has been at the top of her game for decades OP so that speaks volumes.
Personally I think she is very funny and that is why I'd go as far to say she is a national treasure.

LibrariansGiveUsPower · 10/03/2023 14:53

YABU she’s awesome. Not seen much from her recently mind.

museumum · 10/03/2023 14:54

I really like dawn french. But “some kind of Red Nose Day top of the pops thing” sounds genuinely awful. Nothing done for comic relief or cin is ever actually funny.

FrenchandSaunders · 10/03/2023 14:55

Her podcast with Jennifer Saunders “titting about” is hilarious. Thrilled to hear they’re writing another one.

Bonkersworknonsense · 10/03/2023 14:56

I remember her when she first got on telly and have always been perplexed that people find her funny. To me she just comes across as being pleased with herself and sort of “look at me, aren’t I terribly amusing”. She has no amusing comments to make (no observational comedy), she’s not a quick wit. I’m with you, op, I don’t find her funny and the fact she has a career in comedy massively puzzles me.

JennyDarlingRIP · 10/03/2023 14:59

What's your kind of comedy OP? Different strokes and all that.
She's not someone I go out of my way to watch, but it's a nice gentle humour, I have find memories of the vicar of Dibley. I also think her books are good.

Deadringer · 10/03/2023 15:01

I only found her funny when she collaborated with Jennifer Saunders, they made a great team. And her novels are awful imo, predictable clichéd drivel.

JennyDarlingRIP · 10/03/2023 15:02

It amuses me that people say things like, I find female comedians hit and miss out I don't really like why female comedians. Isn't that the case for all comedy? Or do you like any performer as long as it's a man?!
All art forms are subjective, surely that goes without saying

TheMarzipanDildo · 10/03/2023 15:04

SomePeopleAreJustBloodyStupid · 10/03/2023 14:36

I've never found her, Victoria Wood, Jo Brand, or any other female comedian funny.

How can anyone not find Victoria Wood funny? Shocking stuff.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 10/03/2023 15:04

I like dawn french especially from vicar of Dibley.
I didn't understand Noel Fielding is it? And the mighty boosh type stuff...I just don't get it :s but each to their own!

Have you read them then? If so why did you continue to read predictable clichéd drivel🤔

GlassBunion · 10/03/2023 15:07

I used to quite like her humour at the time but not any more. I feel that comedy has moved on a bit.

HarlanPepper · 10/03/2023 15:09

I'm not sure why you think the fact that you don't like Dawn French should be of any interest or value to anyone else - except, of course, other people who don't like Dawn French. Maybe you can start a club together and wear badges.

VeryQuaintIrene · 10/03/2023 15:09

"I find female comediennes very hit and miss". Are all male comics by definition hilarious, then?
