Or is DP? Over a bloody refund

A petty one but still hah!

Ordered 2.3k of items from Oak Furniture Land.
1 item arrived damaged with a 30cm crack on a side panel, not hugely noticeable but disappointing.

DP contacted them about the damage, they have replied today offering a £200 refund or replacement. DP took the call at work and (stupidly in my eyes) accepted the £200 partial refund. Whilst £200 isn't a small amount of money on its own, given its less than 10% of the order value I think it's a very poor offer.

I have asked DP to call back and negotiate a higher partial refund, and if not then to accept a replacement. DP thinks I'm being silly, and its a good deal as it saves a courier coming to take the item away.

We bought these as "lifetime" items in a timeless style. We aren't materialistic or trendy people, we like good quality things that last, hence my major disappointment in DP also!

So AIBU in thinking that DP is an absolute idiot and should call them back!?🤣

I would have asked for a replacement

Yes, that is what I would have accepted too, unless it was a more substantial partial refund. We paid £49.99 delivery so really its only £150 off the actual goods. But maybe I'm being a bit petty? I was just really looking forward to having some lovely "grown up" furniture for the first time that was exactly what we wanted! We almost always buy second hand.

I would have expected more but now he’s accepted you might find it difficult

Vloader23 · 09/03/2023 14:44

Is the crack visible when in position or just annoying that you know it's there?

If visible then I don't quite know how £200 makes a jot of difference - I'd want a replacement.

If not visible then I guess it depends how much it's worth to you to keep arguing it. And whether they will discuss it now you've accepted a settlement

AdobeWanKenobi · 09/03/2023 14:45

How much was the one item thats damaged? The rest, whilst annoying, isn't really relevant I don't think.

villamariavintrapp · 09/03/2023 14:46

You're right, they should give you a significant refund, otherwise they'll have to courier the damaged one back, the new one out, and they won't be able to sell the broken one again unless they reduce it a lot!

roseopose · 09/03/2023 14:47

I'd want a replacement and I'd be really cross with my DP if he accepted that refund without consulting me.

This. Your alternative is to reject the lot.

Corah5 · 09/03/2023 14:48

I don’t see how it’s relevant that you spent 2.3k in total. Only the price of the damaged item vs the refund matters. How much was the sideboard?

Garrie · 09/03/2023 14:48

Their quality has gone so downhill recently. I would want it replaced if you're planning on keeping it long term

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 09/03/2023 14:51

I have heard this so many times for years with them. They palm off damaged goods so often. Get a replacement but you may end up returning it a few times before you get a non damaged one.

Hairfriar · 09/03/2023 14:56

This happened to me with oak furniture land. They offered a measly part refund for significant damage on the top surface of a sideboard. I sad no. Then they said they'd send someone out to inspect/repair it. Someone did come, and tried to repair it, but it was still really visible. So in the end they did come and collect it and give me a new one.

I'd have wanted a massive discount in order to accept a damaged item. It would have had to be really significant. So YANBU.

albapunk · 09/03/2023 14:57

It's a triple wardrobe that was £1400. The crack is on the side, if on the back I wouldn't be fussed. My concern is also that if it arrived this way perhaps there is a structural weakness in the wood itself? I'm no expert though!

I'm pretty cross at DP. He did answer at work though so was put on the spot, he thought the refund would be handy for our savings so I gues he meant well!

Honestly it will always bug you that it has a crack so I would have asked for a replacement anyway

arethereanyleftatall · 09/03/2023 15:00

Where is the crack? I can't even see it!

arethereanyleftatall · 09/03/2023 15:01

Found it. 💪

Tohaveandtohold · 09/03/2023 15:02

£200 seem fair for that crack in the picture. Not sure if there’s another one though

WinterMusings · 09/03/2023 15:07

Well, initially I thought 'I'd want it replaced' but having seen it, I don't think I'd be too bothered. It's hairline.

RethinkingLife · 09/03/2023 15:09

I wouldn't like that crack. I'd be wondering if I needed to fill it to prevent it spreading as there are the usual swellings and contractions as it settles into humidity levels.

But, in my heart, I know that I wouldn't be able to fill and dye that crack to be invisible. I'd need a greater discount.

arethereanyleftatall · 09/03/2023 15:09

Did you send them that photo? If you did, £200 is very generous.

I assume me you meant whacking great big ruined type crack.

Whataretheodds · 09/03/2023 15:09

Who placed the order and who made the payment?

(ie who formed the initial contract with Oak Furniture land)?

NotAnotherBathBomb · 09/03/2023 15:13

Had to zoom in to see it 😂

albapunk · 09/03/2023 15:13

DPs name is on the contract, although funds from our joint account. The photo doesn't fully do it justice, it measures 30cm and it does stick out from the rest of the surface. I'll try and get a better photo!

albapunk · 09/03/2023 15:15

From the inside it's much clearer how damaged it is without the light/wood grain to distract.

From your photo taken from the inside, I'd want a replacement. That's quite a significant crack.
