Or is DP? Over a bloody refund

A petty one but still hah!

Ordered 2.3k of items from Oak Furniture Land.
1 item arrived damaged with a 30cm crack on a side panel, not hugely noticeable but disappointing.

DP contacted them about the damage, they have replied today offering a £200 refund or replacement. DP took the call at work and (stupidly in my eyes) accepted the £200 partial refund. Whilst £200 isn't a small amount of money on its own, given its less than 10% of the order value I think it's a very poor offer.

I have asked DP to call back and negotiate a higher partial refund, and if not then to accept a replacement. DP thinks I'm being silly, and its a good deal as it saves a courier coming to take the item away.

We bought these as "lifetime" items in a timeless style. We aren't materialistic or trendy people, we like good quality things that last, hence my major disappointment in DP also!

So AIBU in thinking that DP is an absolute idiot and should call them back!?🤣

We went through I think 3 rounds of deliveries from Oak Furniture land until we got something remotely undamaged and then they sent a French polisher out to sort it! So just be warned if you ask for a replacement it may also be damaged!

Cosyblankets · 09/03/2023 19:45

I've never had anything but excellent service from oak furniture land so I hope you get sorted

Corah5 · 09/03/2023 20:23

That is pretty badly damaged. I wouldn’t be willing to keep it, even at significant discount. Ask for a refund.

Doesthepopeshitinthewoods · 09/03/2023 20:53

He is a total mug.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/03/2023 09:42

Thats a significant crack. ID want a replacement. Call them back and complain

PandorasMailbox · 10/03/2023 16:58

I would've asked for a replacement. Some years ago I ordered a cupboard and a large coffee table from them and both were faulty. The doors on the cupboard didn't fit properly and the coffee table had a split leg. I got replacements sent.

From the inside it's much clearer how damaged it is without the light/wood grain to distract.

That's bad. I'd definitely want a refund

mandlerparr · 10/03/2023 18:25

That is a large amount of damage, you can see sunlight through it. The only refund I would accept is a full refund or a full replacement. I am sure if he calls back and explains to them that he was not fully aware of the damage until he saw sunlight through the crack that they would let him out of the refund agreement and give a replacement.

The one and only time we ordered some furniture from Oak Furniture Land they ballsed it up. We bought a matching set of teak desk, bookcase and side table. Fairly heavy, substantial pieces that would last. The table arrived with the top cracked in half. We duely took pictures and asked for a replacement. The replacement came with a similarly cracked top. So we gave them the benefit of the doubt and asked again.

They said no. They refunded our money.

When we pointed out that we still wanted a table they said they couldn’t pay for any more deliveries. We said not our problem, you promised us a table and surprisingly, we still want you to deliver it. They wouldn’t budge. We never did get the table.

menopausalbloat · 10/03/2023 18:27

Tell him to phone them back and say he didn't realize just how bad the crack was.

Hydrangeatea · 10/03/2023 18:44

It's damaged. I would have accepted nothing other than a replacement. I would phone them back and say you've changed your mind, please replace.

The End

WhatsitWiggle · 10/03/2023 20:01

I'd want a replacement. ExH was the same though, anything for an easy life and to avoid any confrontation. Whereas if I'm paying decent money for something, I want exactly what I've paid for.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 10/03/2023 20:03

Well, as DH sorted it out, not you, not sure what you can do. You can barely see it. Accept the refund.

smellyflowers · 10/03/2023 20:22

That's awful

I had similar few years ago. We ordered a dining table and chairs from Oak Furniture.
When it arrived the delivery people dropped the table on its corner, this damaged the corner.
They refused to take it back with them even they damaged it when unwraping, we paid for the unwrapping and them taking the cardboard away.
The did not offer exchange or partial refund but sent someone to repair it, it still shows the damage as it was impossible to repair it properly, it still looks damaged, peeling now, even we use the table rarely.
Terrible company..

That is so dreadful.

Small claims court would have been my next port of call.

That table has been ruined.

Northernsouloldies · 10/03/2023 21:01

Definitely a replacement, that looks like it could split and 2.3grand order is a lot of money. For that why wouldn't you want it to be right. Good luck with getting it sorted out.

PhillySub · 10/03/2023 21:17

You are partner has different values to you and is more money orientated. Why didn't you both discuss this before negotiations commenced?

BashfulClam · 10/03/2023 21:22

We got a unit with a massive crack on the door, they sent our a replacement, massive crack in sane place, finally got a replacement 12 weeks later…they gave us £50 credit and delivered the replacements free of charge but I won’t use them again.

BashfulClam · 10/03/2023 21:27

The thing that got me was the ‘quality control’ sticker in the back…did the guide digs have a day off? It’s not like it wasn’t noticeable.

bluesky45 · 10/03/2023 21:29

I agree with pp - if it's visible then I'd definitely want the replacement. If it isn't visible (against a wall or something) then I'd take the £200 as the furniture doesn't look any different but you are £200 better off.

MrsRinaDecker · 10/03/2023 22:13

I had similar with the same company.. I gave up when my third (!) replacement chest of drawers arrived damaged in the same spot and let them repair it. Their policy that they wouldn’t allow you to inspect it while the driver was present meant it dragged on for months. I love the furniture, but wouldn’t order from them again after that.

Overnightoats1 · 10/03/2023 23:37

We had that with the same company. I asked for a full refund and they then asked if we could keep the damaged furniture as it costs a lot to collect. We used Cotswold company after that and they were amazing and we got an even better wardrobe.

Makegoodchoices · 10/03/2023 23:52

I have 4 items from Oak Furnitureland. Two of them have had woodworm, the coffee table has a hole in the top where they burrowed until it caved in.

ellyeth · 11/03/2023 00:01

I would ask for a replacement. I don't think anyone else would buy it so why should you put up with it - for a measly £200.

Retiredfromteaching · 11/03/2023 00:04

roseopose · 09/03/2023 14:47

I'd want a replacement and I'd be really cross with my DP if he accepted that refund without consulting me.

I completely agree.
