Or is DP? Over a bloody refund

A petty one but still hah!

Ordered 2.3k of items from Oak Furniture Land.
1 item arrived damaged with a 30cm crack on a side panel, not hugely noticeable but disappointing.

DP contacted them about the damage, they have replied today offering a £200 refund or replacement. DP took the call at work and (stupidly in my eyes) accepted the £200 partial refund. Whilst £200 isn't a small amount of money on its own, given its less than 10% of the order value I think it's a very poor offer.

I have asked DP to call back and negotiate a higher partial refund, and if not then to accept a replacement. DP thinks I'm being silly, and its a good deal as it saves a courier coming to take the item away.

We bought these as "lifetime" items in a timeless style. We aren't materialistic or trendy people, we like good quality things that last, hence my major disappointment in DP also!

So AIBU in thinking that DP is an absolute idiot and should call them back!?🤣

I don't understand.

If you are concerned about the crack and integrity of the item, then no partial refund is adequate; the item needs returning.

You can't keep it if you're genuinely concerned about the longevity and quality of the item - or are you more just looking for some easy cash?

Oak furniture land is known for this! Google it absolutely ridiculous that's a lot of money and it should have arrived in perfect condition!

Snowpixi · 11/03/2023 07:53

I totally agree. The refund should be only on the damaged item!

Daffodilsandtuplips · 11/03/2023 08:58

That’s quite a significant crack, I’d be worried the wood might split even more. I’d ask for a full refund on that item or a replacement.

My DH did exactly this last year! We bought a new kitchen table and chairs from Furniture Village. When it arrived the table had a scratch (on the scratch resistant table 🤷‍♀️). He called to tell them about it and was offered a replacement, a refund of £50 (it cost over £1000) or someone to come out to repair it. He went for the refund!! He did managed to get them to agree to £100 but still I would have gone for the replacement or repair. I think he just wanted the easier option that was less faff!

Susandorothy22 · 11/03/2023 10:01

I’d want a replacement and at their cost!
You have paid full price for the items and expect them to be in perfect condition, not sold as damaged.
I would contact them again.
It’s not your problem that they would have the expense of collecting the old one and delivering a new ‘perfect’ one.

I wouldn't accept that as a wardrobe. If you ever move to a house with clothes moths in (eg in carpets - common place for them to breed), they will be right through a gap that big as easy as pie. We've had a moth problem for years now. We spend around £80 a year (possibly more) on moth pheromone boxes that attract the males and trap them.

The cost of clothes they've ruined must run into hundreds. They have wrecked numerous cashmere sweaters and woolen sweaters and skirts. You really need a moth proof wardrobe!

I very much hope the company will agree to a replacement. Sending you best wishes.

100% a replacement! You paid a lot of money for an item which should be faultless!
If you’re excepting a partial refund I’d expect about 50% back as otherwise the item will cost them a collection fee plus a disposal fee as it will likely just been either thrown out or sold for a minimum of 50% off. I’ve been in shops before and damaged items are as much as 75% reduced!!

T1Dmama · 11/03/2023 19:23

You get so many days to change your mind… so call them up and say you want either a new wardrobe without damage or a full refund and they can come and take it away…
we bought a very expensive table and chairs from them, we took in the delivery, and half the chairs were damaged, they came and collected them and delivered replacements and some of them were damaged… we were sending chairs back left right and centre, it took forever before we actually got a complete set of undamaged chairs… disgraceful really.

Go away for a weekend and set off some fumigating bombs before you go.

Unfortunately I'm too disabled, and also chemically sensitive to do that. I go away from time to time, but never for less than 3 weeks as it takes me a week to recover from journey. Please don't tell me what to do with poisonous chemicals. You don't seem to understand how toxic these things can be to humans as well as insects.

We have a Oakland clearance place where things like this get sent when they get refused by a customer and I’ll tell you now that they would probly put that on the shop floor for £150 and I bet they would be haggled to £100 due to the damage. So no I would not accept £200 off this item, I’d ask for a new one and a discount for the trouble.

dawngreen · 13/03/2023 09:06

When I asked for a replacement for my sideboard. I was told I had to pack it in the wrapping it came in or they would refuse to replace it. And they insisted on pictures of the damage. The woman on the phone even suggested that their repairs guy could use wood filler on it. And I pointed out that when I spend that amount on a piece of new expensive furniture. I expected it to be delivered in a new condition, A section of the corner was broken off, and a deep groove along the top of it.

No way accept £200 for the damage to your wardrobe.
