School celebrated a Muslim LGBT activist on International Women’s day!

AIBU to be annoyed at the school? I’m baffled as why have the school missed an opportunity here. They already celebrate lgbt history month and then pride in June at school.

Why is this issue that affects a very tiny minority is so heavily influenced in children’s curriculum?

OP posts:

By the way OP you asked a question on here and many people have now voted and given you an answer.

hiyaqwerty · 09/03/2023 23:20

Agree with u op. All this lg.bs.t.q (I've purposely spelt it like that so my phone doesn't send me things related to that) pushing needs to stop! Why is it so heavily being shoved in the faces of children. Absolutely no need!! They have this agenda that they so badly want to push. They think they can push ppls religious beliefs aside, think again. Be whatever the hell you want but don't question anyone's religions beliefs.

Thankfully my children's school have never celebrated or spoke about this. Hope it stays like that.

Because there are TWO WHOLE MONTHS about LGBT issues (5% of the population) and ONE DAY about women (51% of the population) who's oppression and issues are far more complex and large.

Why are so many of you, so eager, to dismiss other women? It's almost a competition at who can make women disapear from public conversations the fastest. What do you think you're winning? Because the cake is a lie.

Because there are TWO WHOLE MONTHS about LGBT issues (5% of the population) and ONE DAY about women (51% of the population) who's oppression and issues are far more complex and large.
LGBT people are women too though, why aren't you getting that?!
Why shouldn't they highlight their issues AS A WOMAN on International Women's Day ?!
As for the "it's almost a competition at who can make women disapear from public conversations the fastest* that is just utter nonsense, sorry.
You do realise that you are speaking to other women here, right?
It's your views people are questioning, nothing to do with if you're a woman!
What, should people not question you just because "I'm a woman, leave me alone" or something?;
If you air an opinion you're likely to hear ones you don't like as well from other women.

Kathleen Stock wrote this even though she herself is a lesbian.

It’s June. It’s the beginning of Pride Month: the Holy Week of the LGBT+ calendar, except that even the Roman Catholic church didn’t have the vision to ask for a whole month. All over the land, flags have been raised, twitter handles bedecked with rainbows, and boxes of pronoun badges freshly cracked open. As I write, HR managers are gearing up for a jam-packed month of propagandising about whatever cash cow the LGBTQ+ protection racket currently has its eye on

Some of my friends have become positively averse to the sight of the rainbow flag, and shudder whenever they see one

And about how it is like a fashion
As a very recent report on seismic increases in LGBT+ identification puts it: “The majority of the increase in LGBT identity can be traced to how those who only engage in heterosexual behavior describe themselves.” Taking pride in being gay was apparently so successful a project that the envy of many straight people was eventually the result.

To be fair she is clear that
Lesbians and gays in orthodox religious or traditional working-class communities still find it relatively hard to come out

To me though primary school children shouldn’t be targeted to the extent they are.

CremeEggQueen · 09/03/2023 23:57

To me though primary school children shouldn’t be targeted to the extent they are
How are they targeted exactly?
Do you mean by learning of the existence of lesbian's/gays/trans people?
As that's education, not targeting.
Not sure why you're quoting someone with the intro "look, this person wrote this about LGBT and Pride Month and they're a lesbian too!"
So? You realise being a lesbian doesn't automatically make you immune to having any bigoted views, right?!

One lesbian doesn’t speak for the entire lesbian community.

You do get that lots of posters on this thread are lesbians, right? And therefore precisely as qualified as Stock? It's kind of weird you feel you have to cite some 'official' lesbian.

That said, I think she's absolutely right to point out that many people still find it hard to come out. I would imagine this is the case for the activist the OP is discussing.

I think she must be the "right kind" of lesbian

So would I, which is why I included that and said ‘to be fair’.

But it’s not little children’s responsibility, and they can’t fully understand at this point anyway.

And are they all eloquent philosophers?

Do all lesbians have the same views as each other?

I chose to refer to an alternative view, all be it one which also recognises the enduring difficulties of women like the one in the OP.

For clarity, @SarahAndQuack said that, not me which is why I highlighted it in bold, I was just replying to the comment

Of course lesbians all have different views. That's why I thought it was ridiculous to write 'Kathleen Stock wrote this even though she herself is a lesbian,' and why I responded that this is not an uncommon quality.

lifeturnsonadime · 10/03/2023 08:59

I mean lets flip this on it's head. This woman appears to have done some pretty amazing things. But you would exclude her from being celebrated on IWD because she's the wrong kind of woman, because she's a lesbian?

And you can't see why some people on this thread find this a homophobic position to take?

That's not what the OP's saying. If she'd been talking about her achievements despite adversity OP would have no issue with the fact she's a lesbian, but the sole focus of her talk was her sexuality, which isn't what International Women's Day is about.

But the OP wasn't there. She is making massive assumptions about the reasons she was picked and what the focus was.

GoodChat · 10/03/2023 09:05

@lifeturnsonadime she's basing on her opinion on the information she's been given.

Who's 'they'? The Illuminati? I'm gay, which agenda I'm I pushing?

By a child and based on her prejudices on this issue.

ChunkaMunkaBoomBoom · 10/03/2023 09:08

'But the OP wasn't there. She is making massive assumptions about the reasons she was picked and what the focus was.'

MASSIVE assumptions. Massive homophobic assumptions given that the school choosing this particular woman has apparently, according to the OP, lead to the endangerment of Muslim women all over the world.

GoodChat · 10/03/2023 09:10

@lifeturnsonadime so she needs to speak to the school then, doesn't she, and find out what actually happened.

The difference is, she has an account and her child has no reason to lie but may have only picked up on certain pieces of the talk, but the rest of us only have a 3rd hand account and people are still telling OP she can't possibly be right.

Well yes that would have been better than posting this offensive thread on Mumsnet.

ChunkaMunkaBoomBoom · 10/03/2023 09:13

'OP, were you involved in the protests about LGBT issues being included in sex Ed in that school in Birmingham? Because it’s starting to look like that might be where you’re coming from. As you undoubtedly know, the woman you’re talking about here tried to mediate in that dispute and got hate for it.' @FlyingCherries

I did wonder that myself, Op is so rabid about this activist being celebrated on IWD it made me think it was about the activists' role as a mediator in the whole Birmingham schools thing.

ChunkaMunkaBoomBoom · 10/03/2023 09:23

'so she needs to speak to the school then, doesn't she, and find out what actually happened.'

Well, yes of course. Much as I love and trust my kids I would absolutely want to speak to the school to get some facts from them, particularly if I felt as strongly about it as OP seems to.

My children are taught RE in school. I'm an atheist. I'd prefer them not to be praying in school and listening to stories about something I don't believe in. I'd prefer it if the local vicar/minister didn't come in at Harvest festival or Xmas or whatever to tell my children that God is watching them or whatever.
So I tell my children that I don'y believe in god, and I don't think they should either.
I don't go off on one about religion, I don't rant about the school telling them this stuff. I don't call it brain washing or think my children shouldn't be exposed to the fact religious people exist. I don't complain that 'they' get whole months - Lent, easter, Xmas ... Your children being told LGBTQ+ people exist or in fact sometimes are brave and to be celebrated isn't going to turn them gay OP

And if you feel so strongly about them learning about LGBTQ+ people, you're always in a position to tell them YOUR opinions on gay people.

Where do your children go to school, Saudi Arabia?
