School celebrated a Muslim LGBT activist on International Women’s day!

AIBU to be annoyed at the school? I’m baffled as why have the school missed an opportunity here. They already celebrate lgbt history month and then pride in June at school.

Why is this issue that affects a very tiny minority is so heavily influenced in children’s curriculum?

International women's Day and she's a woman.

Sounds fine to me.

Does her religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation make her any less of a woman?

OP's point is that they were focussing on her sexuality and not on the other things she's achieved in her life.

The OP wasn't actually there.

EmmetEmma · 09/03/2023 18:56

It doesn’t effect a tiny minority. It affects everyone.

Absolutely everyone needs to know that people who fight for equality are brave and there is nothing wrong with being gay.

homophobia is a problem that straight people need to correct

RosaBonheur · 09/03/2023 18:59

Threemangoes · 09/03/2023 18:47

No but you would think it would make them more sympathetic to people with different views.

Why do you think someone being gay would make them more sympathetic to homophobic views?

That makes literally no sense at all.

It's like saying being black ought to make you more sympathetic to racists.

GoodChat · 09/03/2023 19:00

@RosaBonheur no but her child was so she has more insight into what happened that the rest of us

I don't think anyone who wasn't there is qualified to comment on the content of the talk. Not even someone with an agenda who wasn't there and has got a garbled account of it from a child.

You are being ridiculously stupid.
It would do you well to read all my posts.
What part of my comments comes under homophobic views to you? Please do quote.

I find that homophobia is used as a way of silencing views - it is too often applied when it is not the case. Any subsequent discussion is difficult as the accusation just continues - the person so often making the allegation of homophobia is the one who is intolerant

Absolutely correct!
What an intolerant bunch.

No I'm not an idiot.
I'm not white.
I'm not a Christian.
Just annoyed because of how much Lgbt topic/issues are given so much space in the primary school curriculum when it only affects a tiny minority.

Could you give me the stats re 'a tiny minority'?
I mean, what does that equate to, in your bigoted head?
I found on a quick search that 93% identify as straight, which means 7% don't.
So in the U.K. that's 7% of approx 65 million. So that's 4.5 million.
Tiny minority?
It's called Representation.
Do you complain about adverts, too?

So out of those 7% how many are asexual and how many are Muslim lesbians then?

How many does there need to be for you to find it acceptable for them to be talked about?

If the discussion has reached the level where insult such as "your bigoted head" and homophobic are being burled around it really is pointless. The intolerance is on those who are hurling these allegations.

Foreversearch · 09/03/2023 20:09

I posted this previously.
”The census question on sexual orientation was a voluntary question asked of those aged 16 years and over.

In total, 44.9 million people (92.5% of the population aged 16 years and over) answered the question.

  • Around 43.4 million people (89.4%) identified as straight or heterosexual.
  • Around 1.5 million people (3.2%) identified with an LGB+ orientation (“Gay or Lesbian”, “Bisexual” or “Other sexual orientation”).
  • The remaining 3.6 million people (7.5%) did not answer the question.”

“In total:

  • 43.4 million people (89.4% of the population aged 16 years and over) identified as straight or heterosexual
  • 748,000 (1.5%), described themselves as gay or lesbian
  • 624,000 (1.3%) described themselves as bisexual
  • 165,000 (0.3%) selected “Other sexual orientation”

The Census also states:

  • ”There were increases in the number of people who described themselves as “Muslim” (3.9 million, 6.5% in 2021, up from 2.7 million, 4.9% in 2011).
Boomboom22 · 09/03/2023 20:22

I don't know why the focus can't just be on all women and the majority experience of the pay gap, triple shift etc. Surely that's the point of iwd. Regardless of sexual orientation which is irrelevant to sex. As is gender.

I'm sorry but I don't believe her. From what she's posted so far it is clear that she is the one who is focusing on sexuality, not the school who picked a woman they wanted to celebrate this year. Many schools highlight one woman but in truth they are celebrating many/all women. The OP is simply discriminating against LGBT issues in general. Often when people say they are "sick" of seeing so much blah blah blah it means that they are anti equality (sometimes unconsciously). I don't usually say things like this, but the OP can fuck right off with her homophobic bullshit.

Usually when someone is losing an argument they resort to swearing/calling names.

I'm sure you can squeeze in a lesbian or two in 2 months in a school. This is such a non argument.

And you are right, I do not attend "LGBT" events because they turned into a perverted circus that has nothing to do with me. I'm LGB and I'm just a normal person. And again, I told another person but let me reiterate, I'm not white and I'm not straight. I know very well how Muslim women are dismissed as bigots.

And guess what, I still think on the one day of the year not talking about sexuality and women's issues instead would be much better.

But sexuality IS a women’s issue? Being a lesbian is something that only a woman can be. Why can a woman only talk about success in the workplace or academic achievements? Who made you the police of what experiences shape a woman’s life and what she is allowed to talk about?

FlyingCherries · 09/03/2023 21:22

OP, were you involved in the protests about LGBT issues being included in sex Ed in that school in Birmingham? Because it’s starting to look like that might be where you’re coming from. As you undoubtedly know, the woman you’re talking about here tried to mediate in that dispute and got hate for it.

But sexuality is not the only issue women and girls are facing today. But schools will make you think it is by the looks of it.

Okay, it might be clearer without the swearing. I do not see a problem with celebrating the achievements of a lesbian on IWD. In fact the school could honour a lesbian woman every year for the next few years and it would still not make up for the historical silencing and stigmatising of this demographic.

As for losing an argument. In my opinion you haven’t formulated a decent argument so there is nothing to win or lose.
