School celebrated a Muslim LGBT activist on International Women’s day!

Threemangoes · 09/03/2023 00:06

AIBU to be annoyed at the school? I’m baffled as why have the school missed an opportunity here. They already celebrate lgbt history month and then pride in June at school.

Why is this issue that affects a very tiny minority is so heavily influenced in children’s curriculum?

@CarrieSmisher
Perhaps tolerance is not the best work to use maybe acknowledgment or understanding. I don't know but it certainly wasn't meant to offend

FlyingCherries · 09/03/2023 16:17

I assume all the information you’ve had about this woman came from your primary school child? Because she’s a wider political activist. She does some pretty cool and unusual stuff about widening access to canals and waterways to people of colour. LGBTQ issues are only one of the things she campaigns on. So basically on international women’s day your child’s school celebrated a British woman political campaigner who happens to be a lesbian Muslim. The fact your child only remembered one fact about her and pride doesn’t make that her whole life, the school’s choice was fine.

No I'm not an idiot.
I'm not white.
I'm not a Christian.
Just annoyed because of how much Lgbt topic/issues are given so much space in the primary school curriculum when it only affects a tiny minority.

Surely lgbt topics effect everyone?

141mum · 09/03/2023 16:22

I totally agree with you threemangoes, ffs, it’s gone mad, the school probably hunted around until they found someone that ticked the right boxes for them.

Alexandra2001 · 09/03/2023 16:25

Threemangoes · 09/03/2023 15:37

Do you struggle retaining information?
Lgbt already gets dedicated time and coverage in curriculum.

As do women that fit your idea of a IWD role model.

LGBT do get some coverage but how many from a Muslim Lesbian background? perfectly placed to talk about the struggles (& death) Women face in other parts of the world?
It was one day in one school.

The way you are going on, you'd think we 'd had 48 hours of wall to wall coverage by this woman across all papers and TV channels.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 09/03/2023 16:28

Lucky she wasn't a back woman. There's already a month to celebrate that and all...

NotAnotherBathBomb · 09/03/2023 16:35

MeganTheeScallion · 09/03/2023 15:42

NONE OF YOU WERE THERE.

You're using an imagined event as a weapon in a fake culture war.

I'm not even engaging with the 'Muslim lesbians aren't part of Muslim girlhood' stuff. Or the Section 28 (Reprise) stuff. Are you not all very tired? So much twisting and turning to avoid saying what you really want to say about groups of people you don't like. Boring.

This. But mumsnetters aren't homophobic. Oh no. 'Show me where there is homophobia?

🙄

How is it jeopardising the futures of Muslim girls exactly?

I am muslim, and a woman, but I get the impression that you are also Muslim, and in our community we know declaring homosexuality is a terrible thing (I don’t think it is, but I’m in the minority, even among my close circle)

You keep harping on that LGBT gets plenty of exposure at school, it does, but not from a Muslim perspective, it’s hard enough being a female Muslim, being female and a lesbian is just opening yourself up to abuse from the Muslim community.

Whoever this speaker was, needs to be celebrated, she isn’t jeopardising the future of Muslim girls, she is openly discussing her sexuality for which many families would quite happily murder her and describe it as an honour killing.

The fact she is talking, opens up the opportunity for acceptance within the community.

This speaker talking isn’t going to turn Muslim girls gay, but it opens up the path for Muslim girls who are gay and too scared to disclose their sexuality for fear of the repercussions

It is actually people like you that is jeopardising the future of Muslim girls.

Then they should work on making their content inclusive for lgbt history and pride. Why are they excluding ethnic minority lgbs?

Why should they have to exactly?
This woman is still a woman, being lesbian and Muslim, has a direct negative affect on Muslim women.
So it was right she was celebrated.

OP, you haven’t denied being a Muslim, so I’ll assume you are, being homophobic is something that comes with the Muslim community.

So far, all your responses lead me to believe, that the only reason you are bothered by this is because your dc, who you are raising as a Muslim, has been made aware of this, and you don’t like that because you think being a gay/lesbian Muslim is something to be ashamed of.

No it doesn't just affect a "tiny minority", lgbt issues affect everyone and hopefully education promotes more tolerance rather than hatred and discrimination.

ChunkaMunkaBoomBoom · 09/03/2023 16:51

I don’t get it, she seems like a really good positive role model - who happens to be a woman. And gay. And Muslim.

are YOU Muslim? Because the ‘they already get 2 whole months’ thing is bollocks, they being gay women, so I assume this is just out and out homophobia?

I’m gay, and I can tell you now we don’t ‘get’ two whole months of anything. At best we are tolerated, occasionally accepted, but mostly still have THIS can of shit to put up with in a daily basis.

if you’re after ‘Don’t say gay’ legislation then there are soooooo many places in the world where you can feck off to and enjoy watching LGBTQ people being treated like pariahs.

A lot of assumptions and labelling there.
Lgbt needs to be inclusive of ethnic minorities. Its shocking if they're not!!

You're calling me a Muslim homophobe because I said this?

Go read all my posts.

Good day to you

Who said it’s not inclusive of ethnic minorities?

In my experience of LGBTQ+ community, they are accepting of everyone and anyone.
If you ethnic minorities are underrepresented, well it’s because they are, not because they aren’t accepted by LGBTQ+ community, but because it’s shamed in our community and people are too scared to openly discuss their sexuality.

If you're gay then I was hoping you would be more receptive to different views.
But instead you want me to shut up and fuck off from here.
All I'm saying is different issues could have been celebrated instead to broaden our children's knowledge.
To empower Muslim lesbian girls they need to be provided with education and work for financial independence which will help them live their life in peace.

How exactly are they meant to live their lives in peace when they are shunned and shamed by the rest of the Muslim community?
It’s not the Muslim lesbian girls that need educating, it’s people like you!

Quent · 09/03/2023 17:08

OneMorePlant · 09/03/2023 15:11

The issue is she could have spoken about being a muslim lesbian somewhere in, the emphasis was on being LGBT, and again for reiteration, TWO WHOLE FUCKING MONTHS.

We have ONE DAY, ONE, to talk to kids about period poverty or period shame in general, female genital mutilation, child weddings, girls in Afghanistan not allowed to go to school, Iran uprising after a woman got murdered for wearing the hijab wrong, wage gap, how women still do the majority of the mental load in relationships, women entrepreneurs, women's history about who invented things or wrote books and men took credit for it, ....

The list goes on and on and on.

But no... LGBT. On the ONE DAY. Again: ONE DAY

If this is genuinely the case at any school - that teaching children about issues surrounding oppression of women and celebration of women's achievements are actually limited to ONE DAY only on International Women's Day, then THAT is the problem we should be focused on, not the content of a single IWD event.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 09/03/2023 17:28

Because without education and jobs they have no other option but to marry men.

People can have different points of view - inferring or stating that it makes then phobic which has been mentioned by some posters is sad as it shows a lack of tolerance ( I think I have used the term correctly here.)

Far be it from me to speak for anyone else, but being gay doesn't make you more receptive to different views if by different views you mean homophobia.

Foreversearch · 09/03/2023 18:46

So many people on here have jumped to conclusions about the op, and other posters, with little or no evidence.

Words like homophobia and racism have been freely banded about without knowing posters lived experiences.

If women enforce no debate on other women then we are all losers.

International women's Day and she's a woman.

Sounds fine to me.

Does her religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation make her any less of a woman?
