For me
The unending shite that is brexit
Corruption and dishonesty, especially during the pandemic but not uniquely. And not just Johnson.
Making already deprived areas compete against each other for levelling up money whilst perfectly affluent tory voting areas are handed it on a plate (looking at Richmond N yorks Rishi ! ). Funny that 80% of constituencies getting levelling up funds are tory...
Whole culture war. Singling out certain minorities to attack for purely political gain. In the 80s single mums, 90s benefit claimants, 2000s refugees, immigrants. FWIW I'm fairly gender critical but disliked the way they toadied round Trump and his abhorrent opinions/followers who pretty much wrote the culture war playbook.
So what stops you from voting for them ?

Interesting that this thread has been going for so long.

Every time I see the ''...What stops you...'' title the first things that comes in my mind is always:

''Common decency''...

SW2002 · 15/05/2023 09:40

Their arrogance and selfishness.

Brexit was something the people voted for (whether we individually agree with it or not). I think they made the best of a truly shitty situation and it was a real no-win scenario for them (or whichever party had been tasked with dealing with it).

Similarly covid... they did the best they could in a crappy, unprecedented situation and actually the UK came out of it better than many other countries thank largely to the way our government handled the vaccine development and rollout. Credit where it's due.

However, they just think they're better than us and take any chance to line their pockets or those of their mates!
They wasted billions on sub standard PPE and surprise, surprise their mates owned the company that hoovered up all the cash! Again on the energy crisis, many of them have shares in the energy sector. There was a recent shake up of care home regulation which will allow care homes to make more money - oh silly me, Rishi's billionaire wife has significant interests in the care sector.... £££ payday for her!

It just all stinks and we are left to feed off the scraps.

and don't get me started on their lockdown parties!! We had 2x 40th birthdays, a 50th, a 60th, a 100th, a golden wedding anniversary and a silver wedding anniversary in our immediate family in 2020. We couldn't celebrate any of them, and we did stick mostly to the rules (we may have had a dozen people gather outdoors when it was only supposed to be 6 but that was the extent of our rule breaking!) , yet in downing street they had fucking full on parties and then LAUGHED about it!! To be honest that was the end of my giving any kind of shit about the rules. From that November I just went back to normal.

Labour are no better though, most of what they stand for I disagree with. Being a country family we have always voted Tory, sometimes purely to keep Labour out. Next time though, I am not sure I can bear to vote for anyone.

Our local (Tory) MP is very good as a constituency MP though. I may possibly vote for him on his own merits but I am not happy that I could be helping the wankers in higher government positions remain there. It's something I am currently wrestling with.

@ArcticSkewer
If you seriously think the likes of Angela Raynor could run anything more than a student union bar without fucking it up,
It's funny how Tories are so scared of Angela Rayner and how none of them can spell her last name.

Such as?
How are they "no better"

Our local (Tory) MP is very good as a constituency MP though.
I know quite a lot of Tories who use this as a piss weak excuse for voting Tory - how do they know the Labour, Lib Dem, Green etc candidate wouldn't be as good or even better?

verdantverdure · 15/05/2023 14:01

I’m just not the sort of person who can be repeatedly lied to, have my intelligence insulted, be treated with contempt, and be taken for granted and still come back for more.

fussychica · 15/05/2023 14:53

I find it hard to believe that after the last 13 years any sane person would vote Conservative. I think verdantverdure summed it up perfectly.

SusiePevensie · 15/05/2023 15:29

In the Tories' defence, they have delivered a lot over the past 13 years. Got the UK out of the EU and slashed funding for everything under the sun. The stuff of dreams if you're them.

The problem is that all that was supposed to unleash growth, making us all better off. It didn't. They've had their chance, their approach has failed, time to try someone else.

CurlewKate · 15/05/2023 15:48

What stops me voting for the Tories? The Tories, mostly....

If you 've been following their media (which is basically all media) then you'd have noticed that their claim is they haven't had a chance these past 13 years. Because it's always someone elses fault as to why they haven't delivered on this promise or that promise.

TheHandmaiden · 15/05/2023 16:07

They are finished. The remnants are having their lunatic fringe conference of "National Conservativism" which is doing an excellent job of magnifying all the reasons why they have been so dire.

Honestly, a year to go and they decide to have a lunatic conference of their most extreme right wingers when they've just been hammered for not having centrist views in the local elections.

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/05/2023 16:11

ArcticSkewer · 12/05/2023 08:07

Have you seen half the Labour candidates?

If I wanted my country run by Millie Tant I wouldn't expect roads to be pothole free and trains to run on time, but there would be a lot of gender feelz workshops for the proles.

Are you confused @ArcticSkewer? That's the country as it is today, under the Tories, who've been in power for the past 13 years. Potholes, shit everything trains and genderwoo all over the place.🙄

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/05/2023 16:16

Did you mean shit everything or shit everywhere @TooBigForMyBoots?

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/05/2023 16:20

I meant everything, health service, education, policing and justice etc. But shit everywhere works too.

zingally · 15/05/2023 16:38

Their crony-ism, and inability to understand anyone who isn't exactly like them.

Hang on...

National Conservatism?

Like National Socialism"

Wow.

Are they planning to keep women out of work and education and safely at home having babies and starting a Braverman Youth organisation?

Your view is shared by millions of voters around the shires. Many of those are going Green. Not sure how that squares.

What a fucking mess.

StripedBlue · 15/05/2023 17:13

Several times I have been advised that voting Tory would be better for us financially. But when I got to the ballot box I simply could not do it. I realised then that I have a deep ideological hatred of them and all they stand for.

Clarich007 · 15/05/2023 17:15

Everything!!!
Never in a million, billion, trillion years would I vote Tory!

TheHandmaiden · 15/05/2023 17:15

@verdantverdure - actually apparently we are not having enough babies, but childcare shouldn't be an issue for the state, however, every Brit should be working harder.

Vote for your own chains ladies. They know what a woman is, she's a baby maker without help, attached to the sink.

SerendipityJane · 15/05/2023 17:24

I notice Jacob Rees-Mog has admitted that voterID was an attempt to gerrymander.

He even admits it backfired on the Tories.

And he also admits there was never a problem in the first place.

Remind me, who is voting Tory again ?

verdantverdure · 15/05/2023 21:05

The Tories seem to be rebranding themselves as "National Conservatives" and I can't see myself voting for The Nat-C Party.

verdantverdure · 15/05/2023 21:10

The Nat-C Party is right on top of the pressing issues facing ordinary people I see.

"Too much education" and "cultural Marxism"

To ask what stops you voting for the tories ?
