She climbed up to get the Weetabix

Dd is 4,5 and very headstrong. She had Weetabix for breakfast-3, which was excessive to me. Later on she asked for more Weetabix as a snack, I don’t want her to have more as she has stomach issues with constipation etc & tummy aches. I got her a snack of strawberries & yoghurt and said there were tangerines & apples too. She threw a huge fit screaming and shouting that she wanted to have Weetabix and trying to knock them out of the cupboard with the sweeping brush. I took them out and put them up really high and she was shouting again. When she’d calmed down, she ate the strawberries and yoghurt and said she just wanted Weetabix because she likes it and that I should let her have what she wants 🙄I explained again why she couldn’t have more Weetabix and we’re only having them for breakfast. She accepted it and it was over (I thought)
Just making dinner before and she said she was hungry, I got her a banana & tangerine and nipped to the loo. When I came out, she’d put her wooden step up to the cupboards, got the Weetabix out and was in the process of putting them in her bowl! Aibu to have lost it?

Lost in in what way??

Bingoisthebestnotbluey · 06/03/2023 17:28

I mean told her off and said no picket money at the weekend. Was I too harsh or not harsh enough?

😂good luck with that one op!

Chihuahuasrule · 06/03/2023 17:30

At 4.5 I would have laughed!

Ostryga · 06/03/2023 17:30

No pocket money? Why? She was hungry, she told you very clearly what she wanted and didn’t want the other options. You refused and made a big thing of it.

I honestly could not get worked up about this. She wasn’t asking for a pint, it’s weetabix! Don’t make food into a thing because it’s so damaging.

Flamingogirl08 · 06/03/2023 17:30

She sounds great 🤣

Cnidarian · 06/03/2023 17:30

If she gets constipation Weetabix would be a pretty good thing for her to eat?

JMSA · 06/03/2023 17:31

Better an obsession with Weetabix than biscuits!
You should get her on the Tesco own brand stuff. It's really, really nice.
Sorry, I've missed the point Blush

Ludo19 · 06/03/2023 17:31

She needs to learn no means no, start as you mean to go on. Let her lose it and don't give in.

Coffeeisnecessary · 06/03/2023 17:31

May be missing the point but I thought weetabix was good for constipation? I'm always pleased when mine eat it!

Wishawisha · 06/03/2023 17:31

She’s only 4.5. She has no or very little impulse control and she wanted to Weetabix.
All parents lose their cool and shout. I certainly do, but I’m not proud of it.

I don’t really see how she’ll connect the weetabix to pocket money.

OneTC · 06/03/2023 17:32

Good problem solving skills imo Grin

Bingoisthebestnotbluey · 06/03/2023 17:32

@Ostryga No, she can’t have too many Weetabix as informed by the Dr, she has been advised to have for breakfast to help with constipation, but too much can bulk her up, the doctor says and to give no more than that.

Do 4.5 year olds care about pocket money??

Aww op I have one of those as well. She’s 6 now. I’d love to tell you that it gets easier, but…😂

Bingoisthebestnotbluey · 06/03/2023 17:33

@Cnidarian @Coffeeisnecessary See my above comment-Dr says too much bulks up 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wouldn’t expect her to be able to understand long term consequences at that age. DS2 (nearly 7) just about can now…so pocket money at the weekend seems the wrong thing to have picked. Maybe natural consequences like ‘you’ll have to help me now because I can’t let you out of my sight today’?!

Of course she wasn't bloody hungry, the OP gave her fruit and yoghurt and then more fruit!

OP, I would've done the same as you. This is not about hunger, this is about pushing the boundaries.

MaryBary · 06/03/2023 17:34

They don't have the impulse control yet,
she really really wanted it and was resourceful enough to get it. I don't think it's ever reasonable to "lose it" at a small child. They just don't learn anything from that.
And I'm not sure they understand the value of money at that age, let alone be able to link the money thing to the weetabix.
I doubt one extra weetabix on one day is going to cause an issue and then just get better at hiding it from then on.

booboo82 · 06/03/2023 17:34

Precious first ?? Of course lol seriously op you made too much out of it lol and btw weetabix is really good for you lol

Anotherturnipforthebooks · 06/03/2023 17:34

I'm slightly surprised by some of these replies. I have a son the same age and I wouldn't let him eat weetabix as a snack just before dinner.

If I let him, he'd only eat Weetabix or beans on toast.

Well yes that’s what 4 year olds do. That’s kind of the whole point of them 😂

I always thought this was a bit of a myth tbh. Mine would easily have understood the connection at 4.5.

Bingoisthebestnotbluey · 06/03/2023 17:35

@MrsDoylesDoily Exactly, I have plenty of other options, literally could have had anything other than Weetabix

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 06/03/2023 17:35

Pick your battles, OP.

Also, long term consequences like no pocket money are completely pointless at this stage in her development
