Is threatening illegal immigrants going to stop them coming?

Channel migrants face lifetime ban on returning to UK www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64848101

I read this with horror. I know we are a tiny island with limited resources but this legislation seems callous and cruel. These people are risking their very existence getting on these small boats and to then be locked up and shipped off again to who knows where. Plus the cost to us as tax payers. AIBU to suggest that I don't have a solution but this one seems extreme.

I think for some this is a party allegiance issue but taking out wanting Labour to win and looking at small boats issue what do you want to see happen?

Countries like Aus that adopt harsh measures keep the same even when the alternative party get in, because like here voters demand it.

So do you want to stop smugglers and how would you do it?

If you actually want to stop boats, adequate access and processing points from outside our borders is necessary. The catch 22 that they can only be processed here and that getting here is illegal = more boats.

But I suspect the crux is that a lot of people just think the benchmark for asylum status is way too low.

Don't worry, when we finally brexit all immigration will stop. Right?

How on earth would that work?!

Processing elsewhere could work but it comes down to how many people will take (below a pp said no one is suggesting unlimited but another said yes to millions) and whether those that get a no still pay to come and the smuggling market still exists.

No body needs council accommodation they want it because it's cheaper. Plenty of private landlords around now.

Private landlords are selling up in droves you imbecile. There is a massive housing crisis but don't let that stop you spouting nonsense.

"Immigration will be awful under Labour, just like it is under this government! That's why I'm voting tory!"

Every time. 😂

Reminds me of the bloke on the news, around the last election. Said he'd always voted Labour but the last 10 years had been absolutely shit for him and his community and things neeeded to change. So this time he'd voted Tory.

Aww is it quiet on the Brexit board today? Never mind.

I think the only people that are super keen on continuing as we are don’t actually live here in the U.K. interesting the level of meddling.

Oh, this is charming. It's like The Go Home bus but with extra nastiness. A far right dog whistle. I am ashamed of the UK.

They could hire some vans and drive around towns with that.

If Labour get in next do you think they would reverse it?

They won’t need to. It’s just showboating. There’s no way that “legislation” will get anywhere near the statute book

Cynical luvvies

DangerNoodles · 07/03/2023 14:46

I read somewhere recently that nearly 90% of the people coming over boats are men. What I want to know is what is happening with the women and children? Why are they being left behind if thier home country is so unsafe?

Aww is it quiet on the Brexit board today? Never mind.

The Brexit Arms has stood empty for quite a while now.

If you want to know the effects of brexit on small boats, here you go

www.ein.org.uk/news/academic-report-says-uks-failure-negotiate-post-brexit-returns-agreement-main-reason-increase

Academic report says UK’s failure to negotiate post-Brexit returns agreement is main reason for increase in asylum seekers making small boat crossings

IClaudine · 07/03/2023 14:46

lollipoprainbow · 07/03/2023 14:36

@IClaudine why don't you emigrate then?

Why should I? I would far rather stick around and help make the UK a better place. And actually, the government of my home nation is led by people with far more tolerance and kindliness. So I am quite happy here, thanks.

I think the only people that are super keen on continuing as we are don’t actually live here in the U.K. interesting the level of meddling.

I think some people have some distance from the problems the country has at the moment and the fact it is on it knees, and so can still blissfully virtue signal without pondering what happens to the human beings already here, or the genuine asylum seekers we want yo be providing for in the future, if we are so careless with our resources that we don't differentiate between an economic migrant committing a criminal act, and a genuine refugee.
