Is threatening illegal immigrants going to stop them coming?

Channel migrants face lifetime ban on returning to UK www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64848101

I read this with horror. I know we are a tiny island with limited resources but this legislation seems callous and cruel. These people are risking their very existence getting on these small boats and to then be locked up and shipped off again to who knows where. Plus the cost to us as tax payers. AIBU to suggest that I don't have a solution but this one seems extreme.

I’m saying the international law on asylum isn’t fit for purpose and needs to be challenged by the U.K.

So it's OK to challenge UK laws that aren't fit for purpose too ? Or is there a whiff of hypocrisy starting to waft this way ?

These international laws are of course, international laws the UK was involved in making and agreed too. If you don't like them, just withdraw from the agreement. It really is that simple. Of course you'd need to take responsibility for the consequences. But then that is what being a Conservative is all about.

DuncinToffee · 07/03/2023 09:10

So which parts of the 'international law on asylum' would you like not to apply to you if you ever found yourself in need of asylum?

Under my proposals women and children would always we welcome to apply. It’s the men I object to. We trained the Afghan army, paid for their state of the art equipment, and they ran away like cowards 🤷🏼‍♀️ fine but now they’re running off without their wives and children!

DuncinToffee · 07/03/2023 09:13

Moonicorn · 07/03/2023 09:11

It doesn’t matter, they’re hugely outdated and no longer fit for purpose. We need a global refugee treaty where we can evenly distribute refugees and collaborate to find them suitable homes.

Could you state which parts you think are outdated?

Icandothattoo · 07/03/2023 09:14

@MamOfFive have you heard of austerity ?
And the irony of the user name when moaning about scarce resources 🙄

I think a more even distribution of refugees would be an excellent idea.
You are no doubt aware that, that would mean countries like the UK that take due to their geographical location relative few refugees taking more?

Yep just making my (late!) breakfast so give me some time to put my answer together, will be back

British Embassies and Consulates in countries of origin, perhaps.

Of course it is ok to break UK laws as well. If you have made a law that says you can't socialise indoors with your friends and then it is your birthday, well of course you can have as many parties as you like.

Yeah I don't think that would work out to be to the UK's benefit. Careful what you wish for!

If I am being persecuated, how do you propose I get to the embassy in my country of origin. Make a run for it trying to dodge the local police?

Is it easier to cross the whole of Europe and the Channel?

lollipoprainbow · 07/03/2023 09:19

If @MamOfFive has five kids what business is that of anyone else ?? So now we're to limit having children so there's enough resource for all, I've heard it all now.

Yeah, austerity started in uk in 2010 under Gordon Brown, as I recall.

Then he threw petrol on the fire by selling off our Gold Reserves at a cut-price rate and crashing the economy...

Labour couldn't run a bath, never mind the country.

Presumably in the same way people manage to reach illegal people traffickers?

“There's not a scarcity of resources.”

Any evidence to back this up OP?

There is a shortage of housing alone. We can’t manage as it is, never mind letting hundreds of thousands, possibly millions in to the country, procreating. For god sake, have some common sense.

I am loathe to inject some more facts into the discussion, but I think the gold reserve sales you refer to occurred in 1999.

There are 1/4 of a million empty homes in the uk.
There are 3/4 of a million 2nd homes.

There is not a shortage of housing, unless you can demonstrate that there are a million families in need of a home.

There’s a hugely profitable industry around smuggling

I get the impression posters are happy for boats to keep coming as long as we process quickly.

Will this encourage more, how many more and is there a limit to numbers?

How many per day are people thinking

I think you've got your sequencing a wee bit confused there.

Icandothattoo · 07/03/2023 09:25

@Suzi888 we are the 5th richest country in the world. Best NHS, best schools, best biggest everything. Oh wait....
When you consider how many millions/billions the government frittered away during the pandemic you see that we have the money to fund public services, they just choose not to.

Provide safe routes to stop the smugglers, but you know that.

Bunnyfuller · 07/03/2023 09:28

This is simply a Tory bribe a la Brexit. It’s not a solution and they will run foul of legislation but to the masses it appeases their tabloid indoctrinated views. Where are the actual genuine stats on ‘pretending to be kids’, ‘murderers, rapists’. These instances are a tiny minority, seized on by the rabid right press.

Why not get the funds for proper housing/NHS etc from stopping tax avoidance, non dom status, excessive energy profits and bankers bonuses?

No, easier to blame the ‘bloody immigrants’. Let’s take from those who have nothing..
