Is threatening illegal immigrants going to stop them coming?

Channel migrants face lifetime ban on returning to UK www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64848101

I read this with horror. I know we are a tiny island with limited resources but this legislation seems callous and cruel. These people are risking their very existence getting on these small boats and to then be locked up and shipped off again to who knows where. Plus the cost to us as tax payers. AIBU to suggest that I don't have a solution but this one seems extreme.

@mak1ngthebestofit
Which btw, if you think the UK shouldn't be responsible for other countries problems presumably you also think we should have just let Germany get on with killing their own people in WW2? There were plenty of people at the time who shared your views, it was called appeasement and it didn't work

What are you talking about?
Killing what people??

It’s difficult but it’s a really awful thing these people coming in small boats. It’s so dangerous. It might be more understandable if somehow France was a terribly dangerous place but it isn’t. There are of course reasons people want to come to the uK. But I think we need to stop the small boats and that needs to be the priority.

The simplest and quickest way to do that would be to establish a system in Calais where migrants could apply to be transfered safely to the UK to have their asylum claim considered. Something similar to the pre-arrival checks that were in place for Ukranian refugees would work well.

@Threelefthands During WW2 the Germans killed masses of their own Jewish citizens. Did you seriously not know this?

poetryandwine · 06/03/2023 22:31

It is all too well documented

jgw1 · 06/03/2023 22:36

Threelefthands · 06/03/2023 22:07

jgw1,
Please give your head a wobble.

Last year (2022) 45,756 people arrived by small boats.
That is the equivalent of adding the population of -Altrincham/Folkestone/Lancaster/Loughborough.

To date 2,900 people have already arrived by boat.

This is not sustainable.

We now have hotels in most seaside towns full of migrants as there is nowhere else to put them.
This is impacting on the local economy, lack of bookings from tourists, sacking of local staff, lack of facilities for locals, not to mention the cost.

We cannot nurse the world.

I don't give a stuff about the International Regulations, our people should not be made to suffer because of other countries problems.

.

@Threelefthands Could you help me understand what you mean by "our people"? A description of them would be most helpful.

You are no doubt aware that despite the years of austerity the very rich have managed to keep getting richer in the UK at an increasing rate, whilst those who are less well off have got poorer to the point where the poor in the UK are poorer than in almost every other EU country. This would rather suggest that it is the rich in the UK who are ensuring that "our people" are not helped.

So what would be done with these people who are waiting for their claim to be considered? Put them in hotels in Calais?
Don't forget, most of these people will be either accidentally or deliberately without any identification papers. It could take months to assess them.

All that would do is 'kick the can further down the road'. So now you have backlog in France instead of in UK at yet more cost to the British taxpayer.🙄

HamBone · 06/03/2023 22:37

I’m ignorant on this subject and haven’t lived in the UK for years.

Sorry if this has already been explained, but why do asylum seekers try to cross the Channel to the UK? I’ve just seen headlines and I don’t know what’s so appealing about the UK compared to other European countries?

What’s different in the UK?

SueVineer · 06/03/2023 22:38

lollipoprainbow · 06/03/2023 20:17

And where do you want all these people to live bearing in mind there's a massive housing shortage ??

There are deserted villages in Albania

No-one can really answer that so we can only assume that they think they get better benefits in UK rather than France/Germany etc

Perhaps you are unaware of the scheme to allow Ukranians to come to the UK after some basic online checks. Further processing took place once they were in the UK. Why could such a scheme not be widened to other asylum seekers?

You appear not to be aware that there are already significant numbers of migrants in Calais and that causes significant problems.

@HamBone a reasonably small proportion of the asylum seekers in Europe cross the Channel to the UK. Far larger numbers choose to stay in other European countries, suggesting that the UK is not all that attractive.

Because Ukranians are genuinely fleeing a war zone. They come from a civilised country that will have records. They will have papers and will be able to account for themselves.

People on boats cannot be verified as most chuck their passports in the English Channel.

It’s pretty disingenuous to suggest that somehow immigration like this isn’t a coat to the public purse. It is. It’s not the only or main cost of course but it is one. The rich actually pay the vast majority of taxes. So the idea that somehow they’re responsible for poverty is ridiculous.

stop calling working class people racist if they are not keen on illegal immigration. They’re not. I’m mixed race and have (legal) immigrant ancestors. I bet you’re not.

Are Syrians not fleeing from a war zone? Did Syria not used to be a civilised country whatever that might mean?

@SueVineer I would be grateful if you could identify where I have called anyone racist?
And if you are unable to, since i have not, then you ought to apologise and retract your words.

Sure. Your below words were clearly strongly indicating op a racist: “Could you help me understand what you mean by "our people"? A description of them would be most helpful.”

Calling working class people racist because they don’t agree with your white middle class guardian reader sensibilities isn’t the win you think it is.

Most of Syrian refugees are being house in Turkey and Lebanon the two bordering countries.

If you want to ask about Syrian refugees ask Yvette Cooper and Nicola Sturgeon when they are going to make good on their promise to take in a Syrian refugee family 🤔

Small? U.K. is #3 in all Europe & Scandinavia terms of largest number of asylum seekers actually accepted and given refugee visas. Only France and Germany accept more than we do and they are much larger countries in terms of land mass, have a lower population density, and are much richer than we are.

@SueVineer do you have any idea what the previous poster meant by "our people" I don't, hence I asked for clarification.

I think we should agree that I have not called anyone racist and move on. Whether you choose to apologise for the slur is up to you.

EU countries recieved just shy of 1million asylum applications in 2022. The UK recieved about 72000 of whom about 45,000 crossed the Channel in small boats
I would call about 4.5% of the asylum seekers in Europe a small proportion....
