To be worried…speeding

Dibble135 · 05/03/2023 21:04

Received letter today for last weekend. 73 in a 50. I thought I was still on motorway but it seems the relevant bit was a dual carriageway. It was early morning and quiet so did not have other cars to compare to.

No cameras either. Caught by a mobile van but didn’t see it.

Sent my details off but feel awfully guilty and worried for what happens next.

So come on vipers. Give me both barrels. I deserve it.

I don't understand this. Why self-flagellate? You were speeding, you were caught, you'll go through the relevant process, why ask for abuse from strangers on the internet?

Assuming you have no other endorsements on your license, you're unlikely to lose it, so I would accept whatever the result is with grace and try to learn from your mistake.

ChippyTeaYesPlease · 05/03/2023 21:09

I believe that's band b which would be a fine and 4-6 points or disqualified 7-28 days. It can't have been a daul carriageway as they normally have a higher speed limit. Have you been caught speeding before?

I don't think it was genuine request!

And that is not having a go at the op

You seem to admit you are wrong, I would wait for the fine learn from it and move on

There is nothing else you can do

RoseBucket · 05/03/2023 21:11

I wouldn’t rely on the speed of other cars that’s not their job!

Was it roadworks or a temp speed limit?

Username721 · 05/03/2023 21:12

I’d be the same in your position, must be a horrible feeling.

I’m sure there’ll be people along soon to berate you, so I won’t do that. I’d expect you’ll get some points and a fine. Are they taking you to court or offering any alternative to prosecution? You’re probably not eligible for a fixed penalty or speed awareness course.

If it’s court, show remorse and be humble, apologise. If your licence is clean I’m sure you won’t be looking at a ban.

Zcity · 05/03/2023 21:16

I was caught last month, doing 41 in a 30. I genuinely thought the road was a 40 so I definitely was in the wrong.

It's a really horrible feeling.

I did the speed awareness course which was actually really insightful and I'm paying much more attention to signs etc. After 25 years of driving I had become lax.

I'm guessing your high speed though will lead automatically to points?

Two lanes my side, two the other with solid barrier down the middle?

I appreciate that but if I’d been flying past other cars for example that might have given me a clue I was speeding!

This is completely wrong.

@Dibble135 it's a fixed penalty of 3 points and ÂŁ100 fine.

Don't let anyone tell you any different.

LikeTearsInRain · 05/03/2023 21:22

If you didn’t notice the van and weren’t even aware until this came in the post, then clearly not paying enough attention to drive safely on a motor, dual carriageway or otherwise.

Lots of dual carriageways are now 50mph

DustyLee123 · 05/03/2023 21:27

My local dual carriageway is now 50.

RocketIceLollie · 05/03/2023 21:27

That's quite a high percentage over the limit. I'm not sure what the percentage is where they throw the book at you but you can certainly expect 3+ points....

Many dual carriage ways andnstretches of motorway have limits under 70. The M4 by me is 50 for a lengthy stretch, and the dual by me is 50.

Dual carriageways can definitely have a lower speed limit. I can think of several near me that have a 40 limit.

Interestingly a dual carriage away can have just one lane on each side (people often think there must be 2 lanes in each direction)
The thing that makes it a dual carriageway is having a central reservation of some kind so that you couldn't roll a ball across all the way from one side to the other.

Whatheactualchuff · 05/03/2023 21:28

My other half was caught recently doing 65 on a 50 stretch on the motorway, he actually thought he was going 5 under the limit (not the most observant).
As pp said, 3 points and a ÂŁ100 fine.
It does feel awful but you probably won’t do it again!

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 05/03/2023 21:32

I know someone who got caught doing 52ish (was either 52 or 54) in a 30 limit. Similar amount over to you.

It was points and a fine. It didn't even really put car insurance up. If licence is otherwise clean you'll be fine.

This is right or offer of a speed awareness course ( depends which force)
Up until last year this was part of my job.

It's on the rac website (among others). It's correct.

ChippyTeaYesPlease · 05/03/2023 21:43

It's also on the sentence guidelines above. Please don't categorically state that someone is wrong when they aren't Sofia.

ChippyTeaYesPlease · 05/03/2023 21:45

It's too far over the max speed limit for a speed awareness course I think unfortunately.

RunningFromInsanity · 05/03/2023 21:49

I think you need to do your theory test again before you continue to drive
I thought I was still on motorway but it seems the relevant bit was a dual carriageway. this makes no difference to the speed limit.
The National Speed Limit is the same on a motorway and duel carriageway so if it was 50mph then there would have been regular repeater signs which you missed or ignored.
