To be worried…speeding

Dibble135 · 05/03/2023 21:04

Received letter today for last weekend. 73 in a 50. I thought I was still on motorway but it seems the relevant bit was a dual carriageway. It was early morning and quiet so did not have other cars to compare to.

No cameras either. Caught by a mobile van but didn’t see it.

Sent my details off but feel awfully guilty and worried for what happens next.

So come on vipers. Give me both barrels. I deserve it.

If you get the chance, go on the speed awareness course. It's amazing how many drivers go on it as a dodge to avoid points and come out with a completely different attitude to speeding.

Millhaz88 · 07/12/2023 07:47

Oh so you dud 65 in a 50 and you got points and a dine, but if you did 66 you would of gone to court? So I might have to go to court then I really don't want to do that 😩

Millhaz88 · 07/12/2023 07:50

I won't be offerd the course as was 2 miles over for the course as was soing 66 in a 50 on moterway which I think I's worse its a shame i just missed the course but it's my own fault so I have to take the punishment but I just want to go to court 🙏

No, you’ll be offered a fixed penalty. It’s a relatively minor offence. 76mph and above is where you’ll get a summons. DO NOT PANIC!

Millhaz88 · 07/12/2023 07:53

As when you look online it says the fixed penalty goes to 64 I think then after that is a summons, but okay I will try not to panic🤣 thankyou

No I did 65 in a 40 so you're doing similar speed with a higher limit so no worries.

Peacheroo · 07/12/2023 08:09

Trust us! If your speedo says 66, then you weren't doing 66 you would be doing a smidge less. You will get a fine and 3 points. You won't have to go to court and you will have to be careful because for one more year you can only get another 3 points.

Relax. Just get saving the £100.

Millhaz88 · 07/12/2023 08:12

Oh right I see, okay yeah I already have the money put aside for the fine , I just want this to be over and I will indeed be keeping my eyes open wider from now on as I'm not ready to give up what I worked so hard to get .Thankyou

Nowhere does it say that. 64mph is the upper limit for a course.

Millhaz88 · 07/12/2023 08:14

Yeah that's what I mean it says awareness course and fine up to 64 and all other summons

Dual carriageways can definitely have a lower speed limit. I can think of several near me that have a 40 limit.

Interestingly a dual carriage away can have just one lane on each side (people often think there must be 2 lanes in each direction)
The thing that makes it a dual carriageway is having a central reservation of some kind so that you couldn't roll a ball across all the way from one side to the other.

The main trunk road near me has a section where there are two lanes in one direction and one in the other. It also has an intermittent central reservation, with significant gaps.

There are no speed limit signs on it at all, or at either end of it. I've asked loads of people what the speed limit is along there and no-one has a sodding clue. There's approx a 50:50 split between those who regard it as a dual carriageway and say 70, and those who don't and therefore reckon it's 60.

I like having a clean licence, so I stick to 60, but loads of people absolutely fly past me on the two lane section.

It doesn’t, you’re reading it wrong. It doesn’t jump from a course to a summons. Believe us, you will be offered a fixed penalty.

Millhaz88 · 07/12/2023 09:06

Okay thankyou

Ignore what you saw online. What I have posted matches the official guidance that is shared. I thought it was on the back of the NIP but it might be the letter you receive after which I don't think you do anymore as it's digital.

@Shade17 knows. I know. You're fine!

meeplesmarples · 07/12/2023 09:37

It happens, and on some roads it seems like they deliberately don't place speed signs to remind drivers - there's a road nearish me which is a dual carriageway but has a speed limit of 30 mph. There is a sign on the road surface as you enter the zone, but no repeater road signs at all and as it's only just off a motorway many drivers assume the speed limit is the national limit. Of course if they simply put signs up, people would know the limit is 30 and fewer would speed, but apparently nobody has any intention of doing that. The mobile speed vans must make a killing when they're out and about.

Millhaz88 · 07/12/2023 09:40

Okay thanks

If an ordinary road has street lamps it will generally be 30 unless modified by repeater signs - basic driving test theory (or speed awareness course) stuff. It’s not difficult.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 07/12/2023 09:54

Oh- or 20 in Wales of course

Peacheroo · 07/12/2023 10:00

@Fieldofbrokenpromises whilst true, you can't use that as a given. Near me there are many areas that are 30 but without street lights and areas with the streetlight gap that are not 40.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 07/12/2023 10:04

areas with the streetlight gap that are not 40.
eh?
My point was that in the absence of any repeaters, if the road you are on has street lights, there is a very high chance it’s a 30 (or 20 in Wales) of course, in the absence of street lights you will have to use other clues.

Peacheroo · 07/12/2023 10:28

Yeah that doesn't make sense. Not 30!

Yes I get your point but you can't take it as a given and tootle around at 30 because it may not be a 30. You say it's not difficult but there are times when following that guideline would mean you're going at the wrong speed so it could be difficult.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 07/12/2023 10:40

It’s extremely unlikely that you’ll be wrong if doing 30 (20 in Wales) on an ordinary road with streetlights if there are no repeater signs, isn’t it?

Ariela · 07/12/2023 10:47

You may be given the option to take a speed awareness course if you've never done one before instead of the points (costs slightly more than the fine I believe)
Friend of mine was doing 71 in a 50 and was given this option, much to her surprise, as usually it's 10% over that you get the option.
Advantage is you don't have to report this to insurance as not points on your licence, so should work out cheaper if you are offered this.

There’s normally no action at all for 10% +2mph. A course would likely be offered for 57-64mph so sounds like your friend got a lucky break at 71mph.

Millhaz88 · 07/12/2023 11:26

That would be nice if I got the course instead of points will pray for that 🙏
