You've had a roast dinner at 2pm. Would you want to eat again before bed?

Big roast with all the trimmings - pork with crackling, 3 veg, Yorkshire puds, stuffing, gravy, bread to dip ect.

Would you want anything before bed, apart from a cup or tea or two?

YABU - yes i'd want/need to eat again.
YANBU - nope, that would do me for the rest of the day.

<waves> at @00100001 fellow bread and gravy eater. (is it a London thing?)

We had 3 veg plus the roasties. It was broc, carrots and cauli.

Yep! And if I didn't do another meal I would snack all bloody evening.

It’s just enjoyable isn’t it, not everything in life has to be so regimented. Indulging isn’t always bad. Plus it’s easy to make a small amount of curry, roasts are big by design and the leftovers don’t freeze like a curry, bolognaise etc does. It’s not only brits to like to indulge in big family meals sometimes either.

I don't find it particularly enjoyable tbh

Well there's at least 2 of you so it must be a thing!

Calling the Undereaters of Mumsnet who say they will only sip water from a thimble for the whole of the next week!

We all see you - Marjorie Dawes - and we're not fooled!

BellePeppa · 05/03/2023 17:39

I’d definitely want something, maybe picking at leftovers or making a sandwich with it. Not a proper meal but I’d definitely be hungry by the evening.

No this is completely new information to me. The Yorkshire and potatos are there for the gravy.

Ah, but when you have a little poolnof gravy left on the plate. You out the slice if bread on it, flip it and then eat it up a delicious roast dinner gravy soaked slice 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋

Try it sometime

Maybe it's a "poor" thing, we grew up poor a d had this at the end of roast dinners perhaps to fill us up and get the goodness of the gravy??

I don’t get why a roast had to be a bigger than usual meal. Surely if you ate any meal at 2pm, you’d want something later in the day?

When I have a roast, it’s the same amount of food as I’d have of any other type of food.

Me too

StephanieSuperpowers · 05/03/2023 17:40

So OP, your in-laws want a cup of tea and a sandwich. They're not being unreasonable, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to throw in a biscuit too.

myveryownelectrickitten · 05/03/2023 17:42

Yes, soup or salad or similar probably.

CharlieSays13 · 05/03/2023 17:42

Yeah, I can always eat....

QueSyrahSyrah · 05/03/2023 17:42

FWIW I agree with @Boxe. A roast is a bigger lunch than I'd usually have, but I don't eat it in an overflowing plate, back for seconds, can't move afterwards kind of a way.

After being taught as a kid that to leave a crumb on your plate was a travesty and a waste of money it's taken me years to retrain myself to eat until I'm full and then stop before it becomes a chore that leaves me feeling bloated and sick.

Me too

If we have a midweek roast it's normal size. Might be chicken, potatoes, peas and carrots.

Weekend roast, go a bit bigger, extra roasties, more veg 3-5 types, yorkies, stuffing etc and have small supper (toast/crumpet/cereal) in balance.

JarByTheDoor · 05/03/2023 17:43

Yes, if I had my big meal at lunchtime I'd still want to have a small meal in the evening, same as if I know I'm having my big meal at dinnertime, I'd have a small meal at lunchtime.

OP if you know you're going to have a big dinner do you just skip lunch altogether?

Littleroundsponge · 05/03/2023 17:44

Yes, I'd probably have a sandwich or toastie later on in the evening.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 05/03/2023 17:44

Yes. I can't eat an enormous meal without feeling pretty ill. I'd be very happy with roast dinner leftovers though. And if I ate a smaller portion than anyone else, then those are my leftovers thank you, hands off.

No, no inlaws today.

It's just a idle curiosity foody thread.

evtheria · 05/03/2023 17:44

Definitely! Though it may just be something light or small eg cheese and crackers, or a small bowl of cold pasta salad.

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 05/03/2023 17:44

No just a cup of tea would do me but I try not to drink after 6am so I'm not up weeing all night

moanyhole · 05/03/2023 17:44

Id never be able to eat a roast that big, maybe half so yeah I'd want to eat again later on

ThinWomansBrain · 05/03/2023 17:46

bread after a roast is weird.
I would want supper, even if something light.

ItsCalledAConversation · 05/03/2023 17:47

Yes I’d have a snack or light meal that evening. My MIL has a slow metabolism compared to me, and is of the “oof I couldn’t eat again until next week” persuasion. I’m almost the opposite, if I have a big meal I find it makes me hungrier the next day!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 05/03/2023 17:47

I’d just have something like cheese on toast, a sandwich or cup a soup with crackers/cheese oatcakes.

Grapefrui · 05/03/2023 17:47

No surprise that the women of MN are only eating a teeny, tiny roast. Probably only as big as the salad they normally have. They just couldn't eat any more.

Exactly this, but then I don't overindulge just because it's a roast.

I would probably have a bit of cheese and some crackers maybe 9ish if I had eaten at 2. Probably not another meal though.
