You've had a roast dinner at 2pm. Would you want to eat again before bed?

Big roast with all the trimmings - pork with crackling, 3 veg, Yorkshire puds, stuffing, gravy, bread to dip ect.

Would you want anything before bed, apart from a cup or tea or two?

YABU - yes i'd want/need to eat again.
YANBU - nope, that would do me for the rest of the day.

Depending on the circumstances, e.g. if you mean you have been criticised for wanting something later after a large meal or if you're annoyed because you have prepped a big meal for people and thought that would be enough until whatever time your guests went home/to bed, the average time first world hunger will emerge after a big meal [the amount of food you described] is about 3 to 4 hours.

Yes I’d probably be having a pork and stuffing sandwich about 5.30pm. I always have three meals a day and would definitely miss my evening meal whatever I had for lunch.

Reddahlias · 06/03/2023 19:28

and the idea that having had a huge lunch you would need bread as well is crackpot.

A (freshly baked) baguette or focaccia with some lovely cheese definitely belongs to the end of a big meal. And dessert and coffee thereafter.

Hence I generally don't eat again until the next day!

vaccinistatotebagchicbarista · 06/03/2023 19:34

Usually us having Sunday lunch that early means there’s a pudding-y type dish planned for later in the afternoon once our lunch has settled down. After pudding I’d probably not have anything else.

any food thread on mn is immediately populated by competitive under eaters
eat a big dinner at 2 and that’s it, no more food,at a stretch a cracker, or a thimble of soup
the competitive under eaters always have husbands,or children with gargantuan appetite. Not them mind. That very thought of too much food and they wilt

Pd05 · 06/03/2023 19:40

Probably toast and a cuppa even though when I have a roast dinner at my parents I can eat my bodyweight in roast potatoes

Fluffmum · 06/03/2023 20:51

Yes a sandwich at about 8

celticprincess · 06/03/2023 21:00

Haha yes I’d probably have a sandwich later or even some toast or cereal. 2pm isn’t massively late. But I probably wouldn’t have eaten as big a portion of the toast and trimmings as some people. My kids would have had their dinner and a pudding and would have wanted a sandwich/wrap as well. I have trouble with them when they get up late at dad’s and have a big breakfast at 10:30/11 and then a dinner about 3/4. They still insist on a third meal if some kind - even if it is just a wrap.

celticprincess · 06/03/2023 21:02

I should add though my elderly mother would probably forgo breakfast if she knew she was having such a big lunch. She might eat earlier though at 1. Then she would say she doesn’t need to eat again. She often goes out for a big lunch with her friends or her sister and then comments she won’t need tea.

gypsytrampandthief · 06/03/2023 21:04

@Chocadore are you me?!Wink

I'd like to think I wouldn't. But I would. Probably cheese and crackers with a(nother) glass of red wine 🍷

MarvellousMonsters · 06/03/2023 21:12

Yes.

CelestiaNoctis · 06/03/2023 21:14

That's a dinner meal so I'd probably flip reverse and have a smaller lunchtime meal at around 7 or the very least a snack. That's why I always hate going out for meals at that time cos it's not a meal time haha.

Yes I've noticed exactly the same

I don't think anyone has said no one in their family wouldn't eat again, why is it always the women who feel bad if they eat again the same day?

"Oh no I wouldn't need to eat again for several days but of course DH and teens would."

When she was younger DD - who is a grazer and never eats a lot at meal times - often used to ask for something to eat almost the moment we stepped inside the house, when we returned from going out anywhere, including if we'd just been out for a 3 course meal! 😂

It’s so depressing, and predictable, isn’t it? I think I’ll know when true equality has been reached when some women proudly post that a roast dinner at lunchtime will keep their husband full for days but that they need to eat something substantial in the evening.

Haha, to be fair this is the case in our house. DH is like a snake and can fill up then not eat again for ages. He often only has one meal a day. I hate feeling too full so would eat far less of the roast but then want another meal later.

zurala · 06/03/2023 21:30

Yes of course I would need to eat again. I would want a normal dinner at dinner time 8-9pm for us. Maybe chilli and rice, pasta, risotto, something like that.

Fansandblankets · 06/03/2023 21:36

If I ate a big meal at 2pm, no I wouldn’t be hungry later. 12pm yes I’d be hungry later but not 2pm.

My mother used to say to me, my sister and our father when we got home from school and work ; 'I hope you are not hungry, because I went out for lunch'.

(She was SAHM and meals mostly fell to her although my father was and is an exceptional cook and ended up taking over all the cooking when he retired).

Not necessarily. I’m definitely not an under eater but if I ate a big meal at 2pm I wouldn’t be hungry until about 8/9pm and wouldn’t want to eat that late 🤷

xprincessxjanetx · 06/03/2023 21:58

I'd probably have a sandwich or some cheese and crackers but not a meal.

Firstly nobody is feeling 'bad' Confused

Secondly in my case I simply do not need as much food as I did when I was younger. If I eat a large late lunch with dessert etc I would be full and content! My teen ds is growing and obviously has a larger appetite, so he might make himself some cereal or a sandwich.

It's not that deep really

Thank you - yes my lovely Dad always used to drink the cabbage/greens water (I think it was a Welsh thing and in the war they didnt waste anything)!

I'm Irish and it was a thing growing up.

HulaHoop2012 · 06/03/2023 22:20

ohhhh yes. We would have a roast on a Sunday lunch time. Sunday night tea in the evening- I loved it. Favourite childhood memory

cheese on toast
left over roast sandwiches
oven pizza
Sardines on toast
mini sausage rolls

We still do it now and my kids love a Sunday night tea.

GinBlossom94 · 06/03/2023 22:40

I would definitely eat again, but then if I go to bed hungry I have nightmares (no, not about food, but they're horrendous)

kennycat · 06/03/2023 23:20

Absolutely I’d have to have tea as my day is incomplete if I’ve not eaten a sandwich at some stage. If we go out for lunch or have a roast lunch (basically Christmas Day or Easter Sunday) we have ‘lunch for tea’ which means sandwich, crisps (for chn and husband), fruit and yoghut.

the best meal of all time is roast leftover sandwich so even as I tuck into a roast dinner I’m already fantasising about the leftovers more than I’m enjoying the actual meal!

i frequently have my sandwich lunch at 2
or later if I’m busy and not with my weird husband who thinks he must eat at noon on the dot or he’ll self combust or something.
