You've had a roast dinner at 2pm. Would you want to eat again before bed?

Big roast with all the trimmings - pork with crackling, 3 veg, Yorkshire puds, stuffing, gravy, bread to dip ect.

Would you want anything before bed, apart from a cup or tea or two?

YABU - yes i'd want/need to eat again.
YANBU - nope, that would do me for the rest of the day.

Yeah, I'd eat.

I went out for dinner last Sunday at a similar time, so made sure I had some nice bread and pate in for an evening meal.

Perfect low effort sunday fodder!

WarningToTheCurious · 05/03/2023 17:31

My DH will mop up gravy with a slice of bread.

I wouldn’t feel the need to eat again but the rest of the family would have an evening meal.

Laiste · 05/03/2023 17:30

Really?
At the end of dinner - slice of white bread plonked onto plate and a bit more gravy poured on and spread around and press it to soak it up and ... yum 😄

That is the weirdest thing I've ever heard.

BigMadAdrian · 05/03/2023 17:31

I wouldn't cook an evening meal after a big, late lunch, but we'd probably all gradually help ourselves to something as and when we felt hungry - toast, sandwich, soup - that sort of thing. Dc are old enough to sort themselves out.

QueSyrahSyrah · 05/03/2023 17:32

Yes but not a meal, some toast or a crumpet or a piece of fruit probably. Maybe a little plate of cheese & biscuits.

Fairislefandango · 05/03/2023 17:32

Yes, I'd want to eat again, and I would. How much I'd eat later would depend on how much roast lunch I'd eaten.

If you had a light lunch (bowl of soup or a sandwich or salad etc) would you be unable to eat a roast (or other substantial hot meal) in the evening, or go out for dinner? Because I don't see why it would be greedy one way around and not the other. Or why a roast is necessarily much bigger than any other cooked meal.

Redglitter · 05/03/2023 17:32

Yes, if I have my main meal - regardless of what it is - at lunch time I'll have a lunchtime food (sandwich ot toastie) in the evening.

That's just crazy talk. You already have two carbs with the spuds and Yorkshire puddings.

Yankydoodledandy · 05/03/2023 17:33

Yep sandwich snd crisps about 8ish

Laiste · 05/03/2023 17:34

Lots of crumpet eating going on.

Now i want a bloody crumpet! 🙄

Only 3 veg? After roasties and mash, which are legal requirements for a roast, there isn't much proper veg choice. We normally have carrots, parsnips, broccoli, sprouts (yuck) and red cabbage to choose from.

And yes, I would have a small serving of leftovers at about 8pm.

It's amazing. I thought most people did or at least knew about the bit of bread you sometimes at the end of a gravy based meal?

Are your meals always the same size regardless if they are breakfast lunch or dinner?

No, what I mean is that no matter what time or type of food my main meal is, I eat enough to fill me up/satisfy me.

I don’t get why people feel a roast has to be a massive meal that means you won’t eat until the next day. Surely if you have a roast at 2pm or enough pizza or risotto or curry to fill you up, you’ll be hungry again after a period of time?

I’m not British so don’t get the whole thing around roasts having to be massive. I often see posts on social media where people seem to take pride into how big of a Sunday roast they can eat, whereas they’d have a normal portion of any other meal, and eat normally after it.

I've recently rediscovered crumpets after literal decades of not eating one. I don't know what I was doing all that time, they're the breakfast / light lunch / snack / supper of the gods.

Thinly sliced butter only though, anything else is blasphemous.

OhThatChicken · 05/03/2023 17:36

Basically we had this today but toad in the hole with toasties, stuffing and three kinds of veg. Kids had a hot crossed bun at tea time. DH and I will have a cuppa and a bag of crisps / KitKat each (depending on whether we fancy sweet or savoury) once they're in bed.

No additional meal though.

3 veg is plenty, certainly not a too small amount.

To me, 1 veg is too small amount.
But carrots, broccoli and cabbage perfectly good.

fajitaaaa · 05/03/2023 17:36

Yeah just a little something but I wouldn't want bread to dip?! With a roast.

ThePoshUns · 05/03/2023 17:36

Depending on the portion size but I'd probably have some cheese and crackers about 7-8pm

InFiveMins · 05/03/2023 17:37

Yes I would want to eat again before bed. Would have a smaller meal than usual, so maybe soup, or toast.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 05/03/2023 17:37

Yes, something light.

No this is completely new information to me. The Yorkshire and potatos are there for the gravy.

It’s just enjoyable isn’t it, not everything in life has to be so regimented. Indulging isn’t always bad. Plus it’s easy to make a small amount of curry, roasts are big by design and the leftovers don’t freeze like a curry, bolognaise etc does. It’s not only brits to like to indulge in big family meals sometimes either.

Nosleepforthismum · 05/03/2023 17:37

Two cups of tea and half a pack of chocolate hobnobs. Maybe any leftover roast potatoes but Sunday afternoons are for chilling and snacking!
