Is this combi boiler quote for elderly mum reasonable?

Hi, my mum’s combi boiler (about 13 years old) has broken down and British Gas have provided her with a quote for a new one. It’s about £4k and I wanted to get your views on whether this is reasonable as we haven’t done this before.

Combi Boiler : £1,300
Installation: £1850
Tailored extras: £800

Total: £4k.

I have attached a pic of the details.

Mum is in a 3 bed semi, with 8 radiators (which will not be changed) and the plumbing was all renewed 10 years ago. The boiler will be installed in the same place.

Thanks in advance.

We’re in London.

Does she need hive?
Is a powerflush deemed necessary?

Swiftswatch · 04/03/2023 20:38

Sounds about right or thereabout really.
I paid about 3k 2 years ago.
It will be slightly cheaper to get a non British Gas engineer to install it but obviously you would be left to find a good recommendation.

Headabovetheparakeet · 04/03/2023 20:39

Sounds like they have done quite a bit of upselling there. You can definitely get it much cheaper than that if you're just looking to replace the boiler.

Its advisable, otherwise it could be a total waste spending so much on a new boiler.

GrogusMama · 04/03/2023 20:40

Is she eligible for any of those free boiler schemes?

My mum didn't think she was and applied and got a brand new boiler fitted.

jetadore · 04/03/2023 20:41

Boiler price is ok. The other stuff you’re paying a premium as it’s British Gas. Could easily get cheaper shopping around depends if you want the hassle/risk. At least you can be reasonably confident BG will do what they say.

donttellmehesalive · 04/03/2023 20:41

Well known to be the most expensive. Get a couple of reputable local companies out to quote.

Swiftswatch · 04/03/2023 20:42

She could cut the Hive out and go for a cheap Honeywell thermostat but non of the other bits are unnecessary really.

JMSA · 04/03/2023 20:43

Try Boxt. They're fab!

JMSA · 04/03/2023 20:44

Also, they include a chemical clean with every fitting.

Thatiswild · 04/03/2023 20:44

That’s expensive I’d say, get some more quotes, we got my mum one on an online provider who will come and install, similar size house etc. think it was under 2k less than a year ago.

ModerationInEverything · 04/03/2023 20:45

Get a quote from Boxt. DM had excellent service from them and about half that price.

ThePittts · 04/03/2023 20:47

We had a new boiler recently, Gloworm I think, was about £2300 total, local guy did ours (SEast)

Houseplantmad · 04/03/2023 20:48

Can you get a local quote? We got three quotes and BG was by far the most expensive and for a poorer quality boiler.

Murdoch1949 · 04/03/2023 20:48

Ask friends/colleagues for local recommended gas fitters. Then check them out online for reviews before getting quotes. The benefit of a local, established engineer is that they are careful to protect their reputation, once you're an established customer they will respond to emergencies better than British Gas.

They fitted mine in the summer and I cannot recommend them highly enough. And you're right, they were cheaper than elsewhere.

SparePantsAndLego · 04/03/2023 20:48

We debated about our quote from British Gas and they gave us an additional chunk off. Worth waiting or calling and asking what their final price is.

earsup · 04/03/2023 20:48

BG, sub out the work...mostly to absolute clowns....use a local company...if you in east london i know 3 good companies i can suggest. your quote is very high.

Ineedaholidaysoon · 04/03/2023 20:49

We got the same boiler a few months ago. Paid just over £3,300. Local independent used with a good reputation. Outside of London. Looks like the 'extras' you are paying for came as standard with our quote for example the rubbish removal and making right any decorative damage etc. We did not get a price from British Gas. You're probably paying a premium for a national company, London and potentially inflationary increases since we had ours done.

motherofkevinnotperry · 04/03/2023 20:49

Installation and extras is too much

princesssugarless · 04/03/2023 20:49

Boxy is quoting around £2,200 (I have made a lot of guesses about your current circumstances ). Seems to be a big difference . Body fit ours 2 years ago and they were excellent . Worcester Bosch boiler too

RusholmeRuffian · 04/03/2023 20:49

British Gas are always a rip off. Get another quote definitely!

tabulahrasa · 04/03/2023 20:49

Everyone will say it’s expensive because it’s British Gas, then you spend ages waiting for other people to do quotes or not because half of them don’t turn up, half of them turn up but you never get a quote, they all scoff at British Gas having quoted and tell you they’ll be cheaper.

Then they’re not at all cheaper, some are the same and some are more and then British Gas start emailing you with discounts... and you end up going with British Gas anyway and then for years people still tell you their boiler was half what you paid even though you couldn’t get a quote anywhere near that low.

well that’s what happened when we got a new boiler anyway 😂
